Winning (other than by being lucky) depends on lowering this edge and having a suitable betting strategy.

One game has attracted the attention of gamblers for centuries, due to the peculiar nature of its gameplay.

That game is Punto Banco - a variation of the European Baccarat, played primarily in North America, Canada and Australia. It is also (along with Sic Bo, Pai Gow and Keno) one of the Big Four Chinese gambling games and, as such, can be found in the separate Asian areas of casinos worldwide.

The aim of the game is to predict whose hand, the Banker’s (Banco) or the Player’s (Punto), will be closer to the value of nine. You can also bet on the possibility of a tie.

The point values of the cards are very simple to follow. All 10’s and picture cards have a value of zero, and all other cards (Ace through 9) are worth their face value (Aces are always worth 1). When the total of two or more cards is greater than 10, the point total is reduced by 10. For example if a hand is dealt an 7 and a 5, resulting in a total of 12, 10 is subtracted, leaving a point total of 2 for that hand.

The important point to bear in mind when playing Punto Banco is that winning depends on the hand you bet on, not the hand you play.

If the hand that you bet on wins, you are paid double your bet, unless you bet on a tie. If you bet on a tie, the payout is eight times the amount you bet. If you bet on the Banker’s hand, and win, the House charges a 5% commission.

If you bet on a hand, and the hand loses, you lose your bet.

But what makes this game unique – and therefore attractive – is the rule that if you do not bet on a Tie, and the hands tie, your bet is returned to you.

So, in any calculation of house edge, the Tie bet can be effectively disregarded. Were it not for the vigorish, the probability of winning on Banker would be over 1 in 2 ie better than a coin toss. Even allowing for the vigorish, the house edge on the Banker bet is just over 1%.

Seeing Punto Banco as close to an evens chance then allows the gambler to use one of the many systems invented over the years – progressive betting, martingale, fibonacci etc. Each of these is described in detail on any number of sites on the internet.

My preferred strategy for Punto Banco does not look for massive wins, nor expect you to stake a fortune in order to win a little, as any ‘doubling’ system does. Instead, my strategy works on the principal that the Banker bet can occur four times in a row with some frequency, but allows insurance against it not doing so – the most common occurrence!

Using this system, most of my sessions at Punto Banco are winning ones. The profits may only be modest at times, but as any gambler knows, a profit is a profit.

3. Invest in Good Music Management Software

There are several excellent pieces of software out there for managing music files. Two good ones come to mind. The first is MediaMonkey and the second is MusicMatch Jukebox. Both programs offer excellent music management features like an integrated music player, CD burning features and Iʫ tag renaming.

4. Get Your Music Files from Legal Sources

If you’ve been downloading music using P2P (peer-to-peer) file sharing programs like KaZaa, you will very likely get music files which have strange names like 56_HeyjAck.mp3. My advice: Get your files from legal sources like online music services iTunes or Napster and you will avoid this problem.

5. Create Good Playlists

Most software music player (e.g. Winamp) will allow you to create playlists. For example, say you′re in the mood for rock songs, you can point to your folder called C:MusicRock and create a playlist from that folder. Save the playlist after it is created. When you next feel like listening to those songs, all you need to do is load that playlist instead of trawling through your hard drive and folders.

6. Get A Huge Hard Drive

I know this sounds a little crazy - but running out of disk space can and will ruin your well-organized music collection. Make sure you have enough hard disk space to store your music files. Say you have 10,000 music files that you absolutely must retain and listen to. It is a very bad idea to store, say, 8,000 files in Hard Drive A and 2,000 files in Hard Drive B. Very messy. It’s better to store them all in one hard disk. So get your hands on the biggest hard drive you can find.

There is a famous quote that I have always remembered about auditioning. It is probably the most important piece of information anyone can give you. Bob Funk once said, “The audition begins when you walk in the door of the theater or into the office of the agency. Auditioning can be stressful especially if you are new to the experience of it all. Unfortunately, it’s the best and usually the only way to find work in theater, film and commercials. Here are a few other helpful hints and tips to remember when heading out for an important audition.

Arrive early. Treat this like a job interview since in essence it is one. Arrive at least fifteen to twenty minutes early. You don′t want to have to rush into your audition late and flustered. You will also give yourself enough time to warm up.

It’s important to look your best for an audition, but keep in mind that you will more than likely be asked to jump, dance, or tumble if asked by the director. Dress in loose-fitting, comfortable clothing. Don’t wear a skirt in case of cartwheels. Flip-flops or sandals may be comfortable but they are difficult to dance in. Keep your hair out of your face but in a style that you like and never wear a hat, since it will hide your face.

Try to find some background information about whom and what you are auditioning for. If you are auditioning for a particular company, be familiar with their work. It can also help you decide which pieces to choose for your audition.

If no information about the audition is given, keep your monologue to about a minute in length. Most accomplished directors can tell in that short amount of time if they are interested. Always have several monologues prepared and one longer piece in case the director asks to see more.

Bring at least five of your headshots with you since you never know how many you will need to hand out. Also, make sure your headshot/resume is no larger than 8 1/2″ by 11″. It will fit easily into the director’s folder. If the headshot is oversized, it will end up in the trash.

It is important to smile. If you are nervous, take a deep breath and try to relax.

NEVER ask if you will be called back. It shows a lack of experience and a lack of respect towards the director. If they are interested in you, the casting director will let you know. If you do get called back, try to wear the same outfit as during your audition.

If you don’t get the part, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you didn’t have a good audition. It just means that you weren’t right for the part. There will be plenty of other parts you will be right for. And whether you are a newcomer or a seasoned professional, the rule to follow is “never give up practicing!”

• The 52 card deck (or multiples) all have 30% of the cards with the value of “10”

• Always assume the dealer’s hidden card is a 10.
