One of the first things you will need to do is gain EXPOSURE for yourself. This can be as easy as following three simple steps:

1. Tell everyone you know that you want to start a band.(Word of mouth advertising is one of the best advertising strategies)

2. Make a flyer to put up around town (in music stores, at schools, on bulletin boards, etc.)

3. Place a classified ad in all the local newspapers

Here is an example of something you might say in your advertising:

“Lead guitarist seeking individuals interested in starting a Christian Rock band. Looking for a lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist, bass guitarist and drummer. The emphasis will be on sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ through music. If you have a desire to use your musical gifts in this way, please call (give your name and phone number) for an interview.”

You can make the ad as detailed or generic as you need to. The important thing is to have a clear idea in your own mind of who you want in your band. Do you need a bass player, singer, drummer…? What type of qualifications or experience will you expect? Is age a factor? Jot down a list of questions to ask and keep it by your phone. When someone does call, you will be ready to have the interview right on the spot. Try to make your questions require only a very short reply, or yes or no answer. That way, it will be easier for you to take notes. If someone looks like a good potential band mate, get their phone number and tell them you would like to call them back after you are through holding your interviews. Try not to keep people waiting too long (between 2-4 weeks) if possible. When you’re ready, review your notes and decide who you want to call. Set up a time that is convenient for everyone you’ve selected to meet at YOUR CHOSEN LOCATION. This is important if you want to establish yourself as the originator of the band in order to maintain an influence on its direction. I should insert a word of caution here. You might want to “play it safe” by not inviting them to your home until after you get to know them a little better. After all, they are strangers, but it’s your call of course.

You may want to keep the first meeting with your new band members very low key. Use the time to make introductions, share past experiences, set goals, discuss ideas, etc. This will give you the opportunity to gauge whether you think each personality is going to be able to work together and get along. Avoid egocentric people like the plague as they will just create friction with other members of the band. Assess everyone fairly, but realistically. It’s better to get rid of a bad apple right away, rather than allow them to spoil the enthusiasm for the rest of the group.

After your first band meeting, you can aim for the next one to be an informal “jam” session. At this time you will be able to get a feel for whether the group is going to gel or not. But don’t be too hasty in your decisions! I remember one time “auditioning” for a band and being so self-conscious that I just couldn’t relax and enjoy the experience. It was a local band that I had known of for some years and often desired to be a part of. Even though I had already acquired quite a bit of experience performing on my own, this was different. It was someone else’s “thing”. Nothing seemed to go right! After I got home that evening, I was sure they would never call me back. The surprise was, they did! However, the second time wasn’t much better, but they decided to give me another chance and invited me to come back one more time. It’s a good thing for me, because the third time was the charm. Our voices and music blended so perfectly that I just knew I was in. I share this story so that you might give your new fledgling band some time to get off the ground. If nothing seems to ignite a spark after giving it a fair amount of time, then you might want to reconsider your options. That’s something only you will be able to determine.

Well, that’s about all there is to it really. Once you’ve got your band members picked, you’re ready to start making music! If you have some original tunes, be sure to share them with the others. See if anyone else in the group has written any songs too. Be open, honest and ready for almost anything. If you establish your own priorities first, it will help you to stay focused through whatever ups and downs may come along. And always remember, “Nothing ventured, nothing gained.”

Douglas, a voice-over artist, has been deluged with requests to do more commercials following the success of the current string of GEICO ads. A seasoned professional, providing voice-over services to small, medium and large-scale advertisers alike, Douglas is awed by the response. “It really does just blow my mind,” he said.

But D.C. Douglas didn’t really need the GEICO commercials to be heard or seen. In addition to his voice-over work, he has a career as an actor in TV and movies which stretches back 20 years. He has been featured in guest star spots on several hit shows from “Beverly Hills: 90210″ to “Las Vegas″ to “What About Brian” and has appeared in films such as “Under Siege II,” “The Commission” and “Totally Blonde.”

In addition to his work as a character actor and voice-over artist, Douglas is also a successful writer and film producer. He has written and produced several award winning films. He does everything in these films: produces, writes, direct, acts, edits, animates and of course promotes them as well.

In 2005, Douglas’s film short, “Duck, Duck, Goose!” played over 20 festivals around the world and received several awards, including Best Short from the Seattle True Independent Film Festival and Best Actor from the Trenton Film Festival.

1. Get on Their Level – With a live subject it is important to get at eye-level before taking the shot. For children and pets this may mean kneeling, squatting, sitting or even lying down to get on the same level as your subject. While it is fun to experiment with different angles, you will have much greater success if you look your subject in the eye.

2. Fill out the Frame – Photographs are more powerful and interesting if the subject fills out the frame. Many photographers make the mistake of being too far from the subject. It is best to zoom in close enough the that the subject reaches or goes just beyond the edges of the photo frame in your view finder. This allows the viewer to see more detail and expression, and prevents the background from taking over the photograph.

3. Get a Little Closer – When you think your shot is set, try taking a few steps closer. Get in closer to your subject will show detail and emotion that add interest to your photographs.

4. Simple backdrop – When photographing a specific subject be aware of what is going on behind them. You want to choose a backdrop that will not distract or obscure the look of the subject. Choose plain color background or simple natural greenery with few accents to really highlight your subject.

5. Use the Flash – Most people think that outdoor photos never require the use of a flash, but that is not the case. When the sun is at its brightest, can be the time when it casts the most shadow. Adding a flash on an already sunny day can even-out the shadows cast by wrinkles, strange angles, or other people. Just make sure that your camera flash is close enough to the subject to be effective.

6. Watch the Light — Light is one of the most important factors in photo taking. When you get ready to take a shot, pause for a moment to take accounting of where the sun is and what shadows may be obscuring the view. You don’t want your subject squinting into the sun, nor do you want the light so bright behind them that it makes the subject look dark in comparison.

7. Go Vertical – Don’t get stuck in a rut. Many pictures would look better if you just turned them vertically. There are certain subjects that lend themselves to a vertical framing such as lighthouses, the Eiffel tower, or a beautiful tree. Try going vertical with some less likely subjects to see the difference it will make.

8. Get out of the Middle – Another common mistake photographers make is to put the subject of the photograph directly in the middle of the frame. This technique is usually not the most pleasing to the eye. Instead shift your subject to one of the four corners of the frame so that it is prominent, but not center stage.

9. Steady does it – Make sure the camera is steady when you are taking photos. A steady camera will prevent a blurry photo. If you are not the best at holding steady consider using a tripod to get a clear shot.

10. Shoot Away – If you really want to get better pictures, take more pictures, more frequently. With a digital camera it is no longer a waste to snap away. Feel free to take a lot of photos of the same subject, just varying the angle, lighting, or backdrop. Experimenting will allow you to find the tricks that work best for you, and will ensure that you will have at least a few great shots of each subject.

As adults we all know intellectually that if you don’t practice something, you don’t get better. We tell our students and ourselves this until the bile rises in our throat threatening an embarrassing episode. So why do we keep putting it off?

In the darkest recesses of your psyche a nagging whisper gives you the answer. It’s not fun. And in this day and age nobody wants to do anything that’s not FUN!

Now while I am not an advocate of the ‘everything should be entertaining’ school of thought, it is also true that practicing vies for your student’s miniscule attention span. Practicing is going head to head against the latest video game.

To compete with that there needs to be some pretty excellent mind candy. The very best flavor on the market seems to be success. Generally if you are good at something you like doing it over and over.

In order for you or your student to feel like he’s being successful he has to pass a number of observable milestones. According to studies this is one of the attractions to the ubiquitous computer games. Let’s face it, it doesn’t take long to see some progress on the computer. Most of us know that allure of almost getting to the next level of the game.

To capitalize on that same feeling our students need to have small enough goals to feel great pretty often. Not only that but they need to be able to look back and really experience how far they have come in the short practice times of a few weeks.

And you know what? There are ways to plug into this type of feel good. And a great bonus is that the student will do most of the work to set it up and get himself there.

Here is the trick. No, I am not going to quote any of the success gurus you regularly see on TV. Well OK, I really am, but you know they do have some good things to say and this is one they all seem to agree on.

Goal setting. And I mean setting it down on paper every week in the same little log book. Make up several menus to give your students a few ideas. Initially they will choose the things they want to accomplish. As they become more proficient many goals will become self evident, and they can come up with them alone. Your input will be necessary as they don’t know what they don’t know, but be aware of the fact that a major part of the process is that the student must participate in setting the goals, otherwise it is just more homework.

The goals need to be in several categories. Daily, weekly, monthly, for the term, for the year, for several years. Once a system is put in place and there is some small amount of class time devoted to it every week then the thrill of achievement will be built in. The pleasure loving student will begin to find practice can be fun because they can check off items and see success written into the book a mere few weeks after starting. The amount that can be accomplished with this miniscule discipline is amazing. The book fills up and your young musicians are impressed with their industrial strength production levels.

The trick is to put the system in place and then work with it for several months. A session at the end of the month where students get to share what they have accomplished does wonders for everyone’s feel good quotient and spurs more goals and more success.

Try it. You and your students will all be much better off for the experience.

Ten north Texas artists known “Just Art”, happen to work right across the street at the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church. The artists decided to welcome the newcomers in the same spirit they were welcomed when they moved to Plano to work, and donate a multi-cultural artwork to the new temple.

The group of artists have very diverse ethnic and religious traditions. They have members that are Jews, Catholics, Mormons, Methodists and Agnostics. They have roots in Israel, India, Columbia, Italy, New York, Utah, Wisconsin and Texas.

The artists will be gifting the Temple a multi paneled work of art that shows their varied visions and techniques, expressing a single theme. This artwork centers on lighting the “Shabbat” candles- the ceremonial that takes place on Friday nights in Jewish homes all over the world. Shabbat, the Hebrew word for Saturday, the day of rest is an expression of unity, family, tradition, honor, and respect for ones faith. The work of art celebrates this tradition with images common to the ceremonial Friday night meal. The artists chose candles, Challah bread and a wine goblet to express their understanding and respect of the traditions of Shabbat.

The style of each of these fifteen 12” x 12” canvases is as varied as the artists that created them. The art works range from classically representational art to abstract paintings. The small artworks are made using oil or acrylic paints. The canvases, while all are the same 12’ by 12” dimensions, vary from 1 inch to 2 1/2“ in depth giving the art work a more three dimensional look. The eighteen canvases will be bolted together to form an overall abstract form as they spread across the wall at the Temple.

The artists will present the work to the new congregation on December 17, 2006 at the dedication ceremony. The artists will be present to discuss their art work at the reception.

Photos are usually kept at home in one of three formats:

Paper prints: the most common format, usually at sizes like 4X6 and 5X7. Over time paper prints tend to lose their quality. Depending on how well they are kept the paper might turn yellow and bend and the colors might fade.
Negatives: also known simply as film. This is the processed film usually 35mm from which the prints where made. Although negatives can get damaged over time they are more likely to maintain their high quality. Negatives are hardly used unless new paper prints are needed.

There are many advantages to digital photography. There are different considerations when converting from paper to digital. Professional photographers spend a lot of time and money on this process. For most home users scanning the negatives is not necessary.

Scanning paper photos prints

Photo paper prints are easy to scan. You can choose to scan them yourself at home (purchasing a scanner that can do the job is usually cheap and costs less than a $100). To get fast scans you would have to scan at the lowest resolution possible that results in good enough scans – for most paper prints 300 to 600 DPI is enough.. Photo feeding: if you only have a small number of photos this is not an issue. If you have many photos make sure that the scanner you buy allows fast and easy loading of photos. Some higher-end scanners will let you load a stack of photos and will automatically feed and scan them for you. These scanners are the right choice if you are planning on scanning hundreds or more photos.

Scanning negatives and slides

Scanning negatives and slides is harder than scanning paper prints. If you want to scan at home your standard flat scanner will not be good enough. In most cases you will need to spend money on purchasing a film/slides scanner. The considerations for scanning negatives and slides are similar to scanning paper prints. The good news is that in most cases scanning negatives is not needed at all. For most amateurs and consumers scanning home photo paper prints is more than enough and scanning the source negatives is a not needed. It is recommended of course to keep the negatives in a safe place. You can use the digital scans for future prints or just for viewing on your computer screen and sharing with your friends and family.

Dijo una voz lejana en el cielo, ¡” Seas tu! ¡Condenado al infierno! Y para el judío, ¡”Tu arte es digna de nuestra ayuda”! (Y las nubes estuvieron llenas de seres angelicales.)

De ahí en adelante, los Vampiros de Infierno (con colas de Escorpión, alas de hierro, y el pelo largo de la-fantasma, mojado en la sangre de los tormento del infierno) llenaron la tierra-un billón de cadáveres recostados de lado a lado, estirado desde Gog a Magog, en el Valle: allí la sangre alcanzó siete pies de alto.

¡Y el Señor de Señores vio todo esto, estando de pie sobre alto, vio las garras de Satán, paseando, como un león, con ojos de metal y de ágata (en pasión llena emplumada), y los dos viejos judíos comparados a un fuego, se arrastraron bajo el sol, apareciéndose a cada uno, y luego el Señor de Señores levantó sus manos, como todo el Demonio en todas las tierras, en la desesperación incomprensible, desapareció! (Durante mil años.)

Aquí esta una historia en prosa poética, de los futuros tiempos bíblicos, esto no esta solamente presagiado en la Biblia, sino traducida por el autor en 1984, sin poner dentro de un formato hasta ahora, talvez este es el tiempo correcto para esto también.

Los Viejos y la muerte

Cuando mi madre murió, era como apagar una vela, casi como si ella estuviera lista para unas vacaciones. Cuando la muerte venga, espero que sea simple para mí; quizás la vida sea mucho más difícil que el morir, en aquel momento (el tiempo y el lugar) para ella; Cristo estando en su rincón, ella se sintió mucho más salvada, ella quiso ir-, ella solamente no estaba segura si ella tuviera suficiente viento para volar-, para apagar la vela. Así, demuestra: los viejos y la muerte son más sabios.

Trampled Bones

Calm is the day, with clouds full of angels

Heaven is greatly troubled. I, just me,

See the winds shifting and the cross thrown.
Where once the world bowed, to praise the Lord.
Now all I hear are sounds of death and war.

No more boundaries, for the world are shown.
The feet of armies march on human bones.

Yea! Thus, barks the deep: entrenched troubled heart.

Voices from afar, and across the seas,

Above the heavens— satellites: watching!
From ocean to ocean (unspoken) ships depart
From horizon to sunset, thus, go in search

(The dust descending, dim and grave species)
Whose hearts foretell of death, not of birth…!

The ferocious nature of a grizzly bear doesn’t change just because you want to change its name. Neither Does Pluto. This is scientific arrogance.

Most astronomers tend to make pronouncements as if they really know what’s going on in the heavens. But, then, ten years later they have to eat their words when they make another discovery that invalidates the previous one.

Ancient astronomers were much wiser.

In my own book, “No One Is a Mystery - How to Use the Planets to Understand Anybody” I wrote, “[the ancient astronomers] realized that the planets are not merely material objects traveling through physical space; they are also moving psychically through our inner space. Therefore, they are full of psychological meaning.”

This poses a challenging question: “Why should we spend so much time and money exploring outer space when we have not even explored the planets that live within our psychic space?”

It is a great tragedy that most people have not yet awakened to a psychic awareness of their own inner planets. If they had, they would certainly be living their lives quite differently.

Pluto is not just a dwarf planet on the edges of our solar system. It functions as a very powerful force within the birth charts of many individuals. It’s nature is to transform, destroy, eliminate, annihilate, or obliterate any opposition to its intentions. Let’s look at a few examples.

Does anyone doubt the threat in the countenance of Hillary Clinton? Folks sometimes sense she is like a poised cobra ready to strike. Her overtly hawkish attitude toward pursuing the Iraqi invasion startled many people. Hillary has Pluto conjunct Mars and Saturn in Leo square the Sun, Venus and Mercury in Scorpio. These are powerful and coercive elements of a very demanding and threatening ego that will go to great extremes to get what it wants.

If you were to look at the birth chart of Bugsy Siegel, a notorious mafia figure in the 30s and 40s, you would see that he has Pluto in Gemini square (90 degrees) his Saturn, Sun, Venus and Mercury in the slippery sign of Pisces (”the thief”). This was a very violent man who freelanced as a hitman for mob bosses.

One of the most cruel and inhumane people of the Nazi regime was Joseph Mengele. He performed medical experiments on young children at Auschwitz. He also had Pluto in Gemini square Mercury and the Sun in Pisces.

How can we doubt the aggressive, brutal force of Benito Mussolini, the notorious fascist of World War II? He had Pluto conjunct Moon, Mars and Saturn in Gemini.

Further, does anyone doubt the arrogance of George W. Bush who has Pluto conjunct his Mercury and Venus in Leo rising? He seems to strut as if he is the emperor, the proud lion of Leo. He once said, “I’m the commander — see, I don’t need to explain — I do not need to explain why I say things. I don’t feel like I owe anybody an explanation.” At another time he said, “Our enemies . . . never stop thinking about new way to harm our country and our people, and neither do we.”

So, it doesn’t really matter if astronomers choose to “demote” Pluto. Pluto couldn’t care less. It still remains one of the most powerful forces in the psyche of aggressive and demanding egos who use its power to get what they want — often at their own peril.
