View Feng Zhengjie Artist Exhibitions and Paintings

Feng Zhengjie paints striking contemporary women. With their coloured hair, richly hued clothes and luscious, expressive lips, the women appear irresistibly dazzling. And yet, the wandering expressions in their eyes render them elusive and enigmatic.

These strange, unknowable eyes have become Feng’s signature style. Feng studied to MA level at the Fine Art education department of the Sichuan Academy of Fine Art between 1988 and 1995. After 1989, Feng rejected both socialist realism and Western academic art, turning instead to the questions raised by China’s emerging contemporary art scene. He developed a more critical outlook with regards to society.

Feng Zhengjie’s works and images of men and women as portrayed directly or created by the artist’s mind. A slideshow of glances, many and varied , of people that seem to be passing in and out of view, passing fast through the life and the canvases of the artist.Side-eyed and distorted, characters seem undecided and unable of choosing where to go in the series “China” and “Portrait”. They never look directly; they avoid confrontation with an auteur that hides fears and insecurities.

Emotion in Poetry: Using Metaphor and Simile

Poetry needs emotion, but we need to create emotion with words, the creation which is called imagery. To enhance the emotion of any writing, we can use poetic devices. Using metaphors or similies is one way to strengthen (intensify, vigorize expression, support, vitalize, justify, stimulate, enhance)emotion.

A metaphor is the comparison of two unlike things by saying one is the other. An eample would be “love is honey poured over life.” Love is not honey, but the comparison creates a mental image of sweetness added to life.

A simile is the comparison of two unlike things by saying one is like or as the other: “Love is like honey poured over life.”

Metaphors and similes are very like in what they do in writing. Both compare unlike things.

Remember the nursery rhyme, author unknown:

Twinkle, twinkle little star,
How I wonder what you are
Up above the world so high,
Like a diamond in the sky.

Comparing the star to a diamond is a simile. But that comparison doesn’t show about emotion, right?

So, let’s think of an emotion. Shame is an emotion that most people have felt one time or another. Now, to what can we compare shame?

Shame is like a dirty, smoothering blanket that clouds our sight. Shame is a monster that steals our self-worth. Shame makes us feel tarnished, unworthy, like a statue that has sat in the rain until worn and dull. Shame wraps us in gray, obscuring us from others′ love. That gives us a start for a poem that includes the emotion shame and some ideas for metaphors or similes.

Shame

I stand nude before the world,
My faults and shortcomings
Exposed for all to see.
Like a tacky, tattered blanket,
A cloud of despair smothers me.
Layers of gray with streaks
Of blinding black press me
To the ground, a broken statue,
Tarnished by relentless rain
And worn by whimpering wind.

I cannot lift my head to watch
In case others turn from me,
Disdain displayed in their eyes.
Shame turns confidence into
Disgust for myself, burning
Like a fire without warmth,
Only a chill leaving no comfort.
How can anyone love me
When I remain disgraced in life
By being who and what I am?

The preceding poem has two similes and one metaphor. The one simile states that a cloud of despair, like a tacky, tattered blanket, smothers the narrator. The other says that disgust burns like a fire without warmth. The metaphor compares the narrator to a broken statue. All help strengthen the emotion in the poem, enhancing the feeling of shame. Alliteration is also used: tacky, tattered; blinding black; relentless rain; worn, whimpering, wind; disdain displayed.

Hopefully we can improve our poetry and add to the emotion and imagery by using metaphor or simile or both. Let’s try practicing the use of these in our writing to see how we can create more power in our poems.

How To Tune A Guitar

One of the fundamentals of guitar, besides actually learning how to play, is learning how to tune the guitar. It is an inevitably challenging task at first, but like changing the strings on a guitar, it is something that becomes easier over time and is important—if your guitar isn’t tuned right, you won’t sound good no matter how well you play.

Fortunately for beginners, the current electronic tuners make tuning a breeze. It is still worth learning, however, to tune a guitar the good old fashioned way—using a piano or other reference. In this lesson, we’ll go over both methods of tuning.

Using an Electronic Tuner to Tune:

Electronic tuners, such as the excellent Korg CA-30, offer an extremely quick, easy and effective way of tuning the guitar. The instructions for using such a tuner are quite simple:

Turn the tuner on by pressing the “power” button.Pick the low e string open. The tuner will show what note it is. If the tuner shows a D note, you’ll want to increase tension (tune up) by turning the tuning peg counterclockwise. If the tuner shows an F note, then you’ll want to decrease tension (tune down) by turning the tuning peg clockwise. Keep decreasing/increasing tension until the note shows up as an E.Next, pick the A string open. The tuner will show what note the string is. If it’s a G#, tune up if it’s a B or C, tune down. As with the low e string, repeat the process of decreasing/increasing until the note shows up as an A.Repeat the above process with the last 4 strings until they show up as D, G, B, and E notes, respectively. You want to tune all six strings into standard tuning: E (6th string, closest to you) A D G B E (1st string, furthest from you).

Using a Piano/Keyboard to Tune:

If you want to develop your ear, or just don’t want to buy a tuner to tune the guitar, the alternative is to use a Piano or Keyboard as a reference. You’ll do the following to tune this way:

Find a piano and locate the E key. Look for the two white keys with no black key between them. The first white key is an E, the second an F.Play the E key.Next, play your low E string. Play the E key again and try to match the open low E string with the sound of the E key.When the two sound identical, or almost the same, you can move on to tuning the rest of the strings.Play the 5th fret of the low E string. Then play the open A string. If the two notes you have played sound practically the same, then the A string is in tune. If not, tune your A string to the sound of note on the 5th fret of the low E string.Now, play the 5th fret of the A string and then the D string open. Tune your D string to the sound of the note on the 5th fret of the A string.Play the 5th fret of the D string. Tune your G string to the sound of the note on the 5th fret of the D string.Play the 4th fret of the G string. Tune your B string to the sound of that note. It is worth noting that this is the only string where you play the 4th fret, and not the 5th.Finally, play the 5th fret of the G string and tune your high E (first string) to the sound of that note.

If you don’t have access to a piano or keyboard, you can always find a reference (perhaps an MP3 of the low e string) and tune the strings to that using the second method described.

Developing your ear to hear the individual notes will take time, so there probably will be some frustration with the above method of tuning. In spite of this, it is still an excellent idea to learn both methods of tuning, not just the first one.

You see a table with several open positions. Which spot should you take? That’s a matter of personal preference. Is there a gorgeous man or woman playing alone at one end of the table? Which players are smoking? Which look bored? Which appear drunk or obnoxious? Pick a spot where you’ll feel the most comfortable.

I like playing on the end, immediately next to the dealer. On the end, I don’t have to worry about players on both sides of me. I don’t like playing next to the stickman because I always seem to be in the way of him reaching for the dice or maneuvering the stick. One time, the guy accidentally bopped me on my head with his stick. Of course, he was very apologetic, but that didn’t make my head feel any better.

After playing for a while, you’ll get a feel for your favorite position. You don’t have a choice when it’s crowded. If you get a lousy spot (e.g., an obnoxious guy is next to you), simply move to another open spot. If the table is full, wait until someone leaves and take their position. Be aware of a player “coloring up,” which is a sign that she’s leaving, and tell the dealer that you want to move into her position. The dealer will then hold that spot and not allow a new player to quickly step in. The dealer will politely ask the new player to move to the spot that you vacate. Obviously, when you change positions, don’t forget to take your chips.

People next to you can affect your mood and entire playing experience. They can make it fun or miserable. You might get stuck next to a chain-smoking fat guy with wicked body odor, or it might be a group of heavily drinking babes spilling out of their halter tops. So, choose your spot wisely.

In Astrology both the Sun and Moon, as heavenly bodies are generally included amongst the listings of the influences of the planets.

The subject of planetary influence upon life on earth and upon the human psyche in particular has been the focus of attention over thousands of years and in every culture. Where Astronomy continues to observe the physical aspects of the planets, scholars continue to refine what is known of the affects of the planets upon our human psyche.

Because it indicates ease and luxury it has been shows by the symbol of the horn of plenty. But in a Chart not only will it indicate these things, but also where one is perhaps lazy or indolent because of good fortune and so can be although generally the planet of well being, can also show where we are resting on our laurels so to say. Generally its influence accentuates the good.

SATURN Saturn is regrettably generally considered ‘malefic’. We know it as a huge planet with mysteries as yet undiscovered. In legend however, it is always associated with its main purpose in human life, to cause difficulties and death, before renewal and known as ‘The Reaper’. It is certainly the representative of the great law of Karma - the justice which fulfils the law of action and reaction and which we question “why to us?” when we suffer bad fortune but neglect to do the same equally with our good fortune! Saturn’s influence represents natural law. In our Chart it shows the difficulties, our personal restrictions, our unresolved problems and the serious matters of our soul which provide the present lessons we must learn for our personal growth.

URANUS Uranus is the unpredictable planet affecting all of us by its energies causing unusual and unconventional feelings, interests and behaviour. Its influence flooded our earth and our civilization with stimulated the growth of great planetary changes throughout the last few centuries of revolutions and wars beyond anything history has shown to date. Its influence is to urge us out of the confines of the individual consciousness to understand the universality of all life on our earth and beyond. It focuses the virtues of the New Age Of Aquarius (the sign it rules) that is humanitarian instincts, purposes and actions. In our Charts it will indicate the sudden and life changing things that happen without any observed cause. In our nature it touches the part of us which wants to swim against the worn out values of the past and to break new ground.

NEPTUNE Neptune as its name indicates is the planet which rules over the most nebulous of our watery emotions. As we look at a globe of our earth we see that the material world or earth is much less than the great vastness of the oceanic blue. Water proves greater materially and in our human psyche, shows our emotions to be greater than our physical selves. But until we know how to utilize its influence the energies show in our Chart as our vague potentials, our dreams, our unrealised selves, the indeterminate aspects of our character, our human weaknesses instead of virtues and strengths. It shows our capacity for addiction to habits and to drugs and our reliance and the blame we foist upon others. Its most controlled energies provide us with inspirational dreams and ideas, with idealistic concepts and feeling, with mystical experiences and with a sense of the greater unity of life beyond our petty ego.

PLUTO Pluto is so small that it is easy to see how one could query it having any influence upon our distant world but indeed its influence is such that we are now beginning to find to what extent. Having only been recently discovered there has been limited investigation possible as to how it affects us but certain factors emerge. Pluto was associated as the god of the underworld and often thought of as negative. But like all energies, they can be bad or good depending upon the purpose to which the energies are harnessed. If it is seen that the power of Pluto directs the great monopolies and business enterprises which have bullied others out of existence, or which work to undermine the health and well being of us all, it is course is seen as a negative power developed and expressed in this way.

However if the same energy could work to bring us a one world of peace and a brotherhood of people an ideal as yet never accomplished in our history - it can only be seen as a unifying principle which is goodness itself. The actual details of Pluto, its function in the solar system and its affect upon our lives remains to a large extent, speculation.

How To Choose Your First Microphone For Your Recording Studio

So you have decided to buy a studio microphone? The first notion I’d like to shoot down is the “studio microphone myth”. There is no such thing as a studio microphone. A microphone will pickup sound anywhere you put it. It doesn’t have to be a recording studio. It can be a kitchen. Granted, some mics are less durable than others and these mics tend to be used more in the studio than on stage simply because everything is abused live.

The second myth I’d like to shoot down is the idea that mics have special features. There are no guitar mics. There are no vocal mics. There are no drum mics (except for maybe those tom mounting gadgets that I don’t really recommend because of poor mic placement options). All mics pick up sound. You can use a mic that some may consider a “vocal mic” on a kick drum. You can do the same with guitar. In the end, all mics have a certain sound. You can use them however you see fit. There are no rules.

Regardless of budget, no microphone gets used more in my home recording studio than a Shure SM 57. Yes, I have a $2500 Soundelux U99 tube condenser microphone. I have a Royer R121 ribbon microphone, but in my studio the Shure SM 57 gets use the most often. So with that being said, if you don’t have at least 2 SM 57s, don’t read any further. I’d bet that half the cds you own (or more) use an SM 57 on snare top and electric guitars. All these major label cds can’t be wrong, can they? In fact, I’ve heard stories about a number of major label singers insisting on a Shure SM 57.

While the Shure Sṍ gets use the most out of all the microphones in my recording studio, it’s not right for everything. I wish it was. It’s much cheaper than some of my other microphones. You have to understand that microphones are more like colors than anything. If you don’t have the right color, than you will have problems. The perfect mic for the job will sound great. The wrong mic for the job will require EQ and still probably never sound right.

Your second mic could be a number of different microphones. It’s recommended that you choose a microphone that sounds much different than an SM 57. A good choice might be a Audio Technica AT 4050. This mic can be pretty good on vocals. It’s pretty bright. On some singers I’ve knocked the high end down quite a bit. (Actually, after using an AT4050 long enough, I decided I wanted a “duller” condenser mic. Ironically, dull costs about 5 times as much). The truth is I don’t use my AT 4050 all that much, but I think it would be a nice opposing color to your SM 57.

You have to remember that the more mics you have, the less you use each one, normally. That’s actually the whole point. If you have 100 mics and you know and understand each one inside and out, when it comes to micing up a giving source, you are much more likely to get exactly the right tone without the use of EQ. When you have 2 mics, this is much more difficult. Of course, you’ve got to be in it for the long haul to need 100 mics. Another great choice is a used AKG 414. They cost closer to $1000 brand new, but you can usually snag one for half that.

In the end, no one can pick a mic for you. You may hate all of my suggestions. Make sure you buy your equipment from a store that allows you to try a mic out. If you don′t like a piece of gear, you are stuck with it. Do not believe articles like this…. believe your ears!
