The Baldheaded Cowboy Band Leader

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

I don’t know if anyone will remember this most unusual happening that took place sometime in the late 1950’s in Monticello, Arkansas. Although I don’t remember any special occasion, all the school is there, waiting to hear a small country and western band perform in the local high school gymnasium.

In those days the gym was located between the grammar school buildings on the east and the junior high school building on the west. The two-story red brick high school building was located nearby on the north with other miscellaneous buildings scattered about on the west side of town.

The gym, built several years before was constructed in the style of the day with steep wood bleachers that creaked with your every move and a small elevated stage area at the east end of a highly buffed hardwood floor. A basketball goal majestically hung at each end of the court leaving no doubt as to the purpose for the man made arena.

That day, the old building is bursting at the seams. There is not a crack to be seen in the row after row of anxious faces where you could place another single child. Teachers, faculty and a few staff members occupy several brown metal folding chairs, arranged at the east end of the hardwood floor.

Near the outside entrance between the stands and the stage, Mr. Ross, the superintendent of schools, stood with his arms folded, patiently waiting his turn to introduce the band and explain the purpose for everyone being there. Meanwhile, piece by piece, the band members set up their equipment under the east basketball goal, properly arranging the instruments and cables so that so that they are orderly and convenient.

The band leader, a very good looking tall individual wearing a white cowboy hat and sporting a wonderful dark tan, would seem to be every girl’s dream. He smiles broadly as the stands erupt into a loud roar as each member of his group is recognized.

Once his supporting cast is introduced, the leader takes his turn and steps forward. He removes his hat and bows to the anxious throng of fans in the traditional cowboy manner, revealing a neatly trimmed but almost completely bald head.

In an instant the moment is changed. The audience is hushed and stunned. But just as quickly the singer whirls and sails his white sombrero through the nearby basketball goal and retrieves it on the first try. A trick obviously meant to take an over anxious audience’s mind off his shinning pate and put it on his music, a part of him that also shined.

As he returned the hat to his head and struck a chord on his guitar, the band is again greeted by a loud uproar with everyone standing and clapping to show their approval for the band being there.

I’m sure we had a wonderful time listening to the events that followed, but what I remember most was the instantaneous change in tempo from the roaring applause to dead silence, just for a moment as the overhead lights bounced off the smartly dressed cowboy’s head into our eyes and into our minds.

Bartending Secrets Revealed Special Report - Two Strategies to Instantly Increase Your Tips

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

So you want to learn how to increase your tips? If you want to learn the time tested techniques that will help fatten your wallet, then you must read this report. This report will show you 2 fr.ee tips I guarantee will work. It’s great to learn hundreds of recipes but it is so much more than that, and I am going to explain to you what I am talking about.

In this special report I will NOT give you a cookie cutter, bartending school lecture on bartending recipes and blah, blah, blah. I am going to cut all the fluff and just tell you how it’s done. The key here is that regardless of how many drinks you know how to make; even if you mix up a horrible drink every time you bartend you can still bankroll some huge tips!

#1 Special Report Tip: Demand Attention from Your Patrons

Have you ever been to a bar where a bartender is trying his or her best to get your attention? This special technique may bother your customers while they are trying to have a nice time but if you give them a reason to turn around, make it worth their wild. This is what you can do:

First, you will need a device that will be your attention getter that will eventually get your patrons to turn around and see what that sound is. All you need is some kind of device that will bring people to you. You can use certain devices such as:

•A whistle •A blow horn •Some kind of flashing light fixture (laser light)

When you use these devices, the main objective is to get their attention, not to annoy them. Get them to the bar to purchase drinks and entertain them when they come over so you mentally force tips into your tip jar. This tip works and I have seen many bartenders use this technique and make a fortune every night because you are giving them more than a smile, you are demanding their attention and when you get it, you capitalized on it.

For example, if you are on the bar blowing your whistle, I guarantee people will turn and look at you. When they turn, motion for them to come over…it creates quick conversation about the bartender…most people won’t blatantly ignore you and will eventually come over to the bar to see what you have to offer.

#2 Special Report Tip: Working with the DJ

Announcements from the DJ are always a good idea. The DJ can either announce drink specials or even events. For example, the DJ can announce that the bartender will be giving out free shots to girls that will get on the bar and dance. This will get people to the bar so you can work your bartending charm.

Inviting girls to dance on the bar will eventually bring guys to the bar to see the girls and they will most likely buy a few shots or a round of drinks and tip the hell out of you for getting the girls up on the bar. Also, when the DJ makes announcements, make sure they say your name. This will make you more personable.

Other ideas for working with the DJ:

•Have the DJ give a shot out to the bartender, “Give a hand to Teddy who is working hard at the bar and don’t forget to give him a tip!” This makes people remember your name; it reminds them to go to the bar and get a drink and leave at tip while they are at it! Make sure you take care of the DJ at the end of the night because the next night, guess what he will give that same announcement or shout out all night to get customers to the bar.

•Have the DJ ask if it is anybody’s birthday. After someone steps up and shows the DJ their ID, the DJ will announce their name and send them to the bar. Give the birthday customer a free shot. If it is their birthday, I guarantee they are there with a group of friends. Therefore, the friends are also now all at the bar; this means shot buying and drinks like crazy. Your tips will skyrocket just from that group!

oExtra tip: Create a special shot that is called “The Birthday Shot”, so that it is “exclusive” to them to make them feel special.

Remember, a bartender is a salesman. You are in the business of not only selling drinks but of selling yourself as well. Your personality and charisma will take you very far. A bartender is a psychologist, a sociologist and a businessman all wrapped in one.

National Illegal Immigration Boycott; Why Not Make it One Month?

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

On May 1st, 2006 there will be a Hispanic boycott of all businesses and they plan on not spending any money. They say they are doing this to promote fairness to illegal immigrants, however many of the Hispanic people participating are not illegal immigrants; they are here legally.

This national illegal immigration boycott is a slap in the face to Americans considering all we have had to deal with with 24 million illegal aliens in our country who are not even supposed to be here. I say that Hispanic groups should not participate in any illegal immigration boycott.

I say let the illegal immigrants and illegal aliens boycott if they want to and why not make the boycott one month and not only one day and meanwhile they can take a vacation to go back to where they came from for that month and then all Americans can see that we will get along just fine without any illegal immigrants in our country at all.

Some believe that American economy would collapse without illegal aliens to work. I absolutely disagree with this notion and I would say it is a farce. The United States of America and her people can and do work very hard. Some say there are jobs that Americans will not do, however I say we have the technological advances to build robots to do those jobs and therefore that point of contents in an argument is absolute BS. Please consider this in 2006.

Many New Players Making Old Mistakes

Common mistakes made in seven-card stud

Hi. Come on in. Feeling the need of healthful nutrition for our neglected bodies, I have gathered an assortment of fresh fruits. The have a good taste and are high in fiber; highly salubrious. Let’s talk about new players and mistakes. Your opponents are making money from your mistakes. If you didn’t make any mistakes, about the only way your opponents would get your money would be to get lucky and outdraw you.

One of the assignments I give my Poker Rooms students is to constantly monitor themselves for mistakes in their play. I now give you the same admonition. Before making any move at the poker table, ask yourself, “Is this is a mistake?” Train yourself by practicing that question over and over — before taking any action at the table. If what you are about to do isn’t a mistake, go ahead and do it. If you determine that it is a mistake, don’t do it. It’s that simple. Today, we’ll look at some low- and medium-limit seven- card stud mistakes. Another time, we’ll check out hold’em.

First, you’re holding a small four-flush on fourth street. You’ve seen four of your needed suit in other players’ upcards. That’s too many. Then, a voice in the back of your head says, “There are too many hearts out, but what the heck, I haven’t played a hand in more than 20 minutes. I’m gonna go for it — next time, I’ll be good.” I doubt it. Next time, it will be easier to slip.

Second Mistake Second, when the only value of your hand in very early position on third street is large overcards versus what’s on the board, calling is often a mistake. Generally, you want to play a hand like this from late position against one player. If you insist on playing it from an early position, forget about calling, because you’ll end up with too many opponents. You’d better raise and substantially narrow the field. Your best chance of winning is to eliminate the straight and flush draws and then pair up a big card, bigger than any pair your opponent could be holding. Players entering a pot on third street with a small pair and a small sidecard is another big mistake I’ve often seen. The only real improvement to such a hand is to make trips. They can’t make two big pair because they have no big card to pair.

Compounding this error by continuing to play when they pair that small sidecard is another big mistake I’ve seen many new (and old) poker room players make. Fives and threes is just not much of a poker hand at the low and medium limits. About the only hand that hand will beat is one pair. Next, players who check on seventh street without looking at their last card (“check dark”) do so mostly to stop someone else from betting. The implied threat is, “I check before look- ing to see if I made my hand, so if you bet, I might raise, so watch out.” The problem is, you are acting without information. You might intimidate an opponent into checking along, and then when you look and see that you made your hand, you missed a bet. Also, if a strong opponent makes any kind of hand, he’s going to bet despite your implied threat.

That puts the “threat” back onto you, and now you must decide whether he bet because he made a winning hand or because you have shown weakness. I’ve seen this next mistake a hundred times in public poker rooms when players let their egos into the game. One player will raise another player’s bet on an early street, not because of the value of his hand, but because he doesn’t like the other player. “You raised me last hand, so I raise you, wise guy.” The initial bettor’s ego isn’t going to stand for that. “Oh yeah? Well, back at you, buddy.” So, we have these two players warring, with neither of them strong enough to have stood the first raise. As I watch, I know that in about a minute and a half, one of these guys is going to be kicking himself in the butt for ever having gotten involved in this hand. The other will be congratulating himself on his brilliant play.

Bad Days We’ve all experienced days when we just can’t seem to pick up a starting hand, and to make matters worse, keep getting hit with the low card on third street. The mistake is tossing in your forced bet and your garbage hand along with it. The problem with that is, for instance, you might have paired one of your cards on fourth street, had everyone check, and then made trips on fifth street and a full house on sixth street. (Admittedly, that’s a stretch, but I’ve seen such things happen.) Finally, not calling on seventh street without knowing for certain that the bettor has you beat is another common error. If you have any reasonable chance, even with only a fair hand, it usually is best to call for that one last bet on seventh street. If you are beat, you lose one more bet. However, if you throw away the best hand, you lose a whole pot. Keep asking yourself, “Is this a mistake?”

We really made short work of all that fresh fruit. I feel more healthy already. But, I still require repose. Take a couple of peaches and kill the light on your way out. Stopping Green Peace Once and For All

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Those little sneaky bastards said a cop in Ireland recently; he was talking about Green Peace and their persnickety prank. Some say that Green Peace lays on the far fringe of the far-left environmental movement.

They are right Green Peace is a pain in the ass they must be stopped from their dastardly deeds as they are “Heathens and Scoundrels in the midst” said a farmer who as clearing some trees for some more acreage to farm. Additionally he said that all people who call themselves Environmental Activists must stand together and reprimand the Green Peace Group and the eco-terrorist fringe group, which often intimidates, threatens, slanders and uses extortion techniques to shut up anyone who does not think the way they do. Or burn down businesses and homes and cause pollution in order to clean the air. It is for this reason that Environmental issue will continue to struggle thru this decade and perhaps even into the next.

Many luxury log cabin owners have stated that Environmental Green Peace and the Eco-ELF-Terrorists fringe must be stopped and they have joined opposition to pro-environmental issues in the US and will vote, donate monies to candidates against environmental movements and influence as many people as they can to do the same. All because the environmental fringe was out of control and not because these homeowners were against the environment, quite the contrary.

Some of these homeowners have urged all Americans to defeat environmental movement initiatives, not because it is morally wrong, but because of the abuse that their fringe, which they refuse to control. They see this fringe group as detrimental as the worst violent fringe of any civil rights groups movement in the history of the United States. That’s how they see it and we must therefore all stand united against environmental terrorists like ELF and Green Peace but simultaneously doing what makes sense to maintain a healthy environment. Consider all this in 2006.

The Law and Online Sports Betting

Straight Answers On the Legality of Sports Betting

When considering betting sports on the internet, it’s not uncommon for a person to wonder whether they′re breaking a local or state law. After all, most states, and even the federal government, have legislation about whether and how it’s legal or not to gamble.

Who Regulates Sports Betting?

Until recently, the regulation of gambling in the US was left entirely to the discretion of the individual States. But the advent of online gambling created confusion about jurisdiction. After all, who runs the laws in cyberspace? Most current laws meant to apply to gambling in general were created long before the internet existed, and thus the application of those laws to online gambling is open to broad interpretation.

US Regulation of Sports Betting

“The most important question being asked about online gambling is: ‘Is it legal to run a sports betting operation offshore and take action from clients in the United States?’ The US government will argue it is not legal.

However, no bills have been passed to prevent such activity; and in recent years attempts to pass bills of this nature have failed,” explains Chris Costigan, sports gambling analyst and president of Gambling911.com, the industry’s premier sportsbook watchdog site.

Costigan continues on, “The Federal government has placed much of the responsibility of gambling legislation in the hands of individual states, some of which have considered legalizing online gambling (North Dakota voted on legalizing online poker within the state, but that bill failed to pass). Some states, like Illinois, have added legislation that strictly prohibits the advertising of online casinos. Only three states - California, Louisiana, and Nevada - strictly prohibit its citizens from betting beyond state borders. However, such laws are historically loosely enforced. Most states consider gambling violations misdemeanors with the vast majority focusing specifically on operators as opposed to the actual gamblers themselves.”

To avoid breaking US law, most internet sportsbooks are located offshore in foreign countries and also house their computer servers there. (Click here to learn more about the Advantages of Online Sportsbooks)

To be clear, the US government has been attempting to pass legislation to deal specifically with the regulation of online gambling. However, because there are so many grey areas regarding who has authority over activities in cyberspace, these attempts have not been successful in passing and it’s becoming clear that the US will not be able to effectively legislate online gambling. As Costigan and Gamblin𙗧.com point out, “2005 will be the first time in five years we will not see any proposed anti-gambling bills emerge in Washington.”

Legal Issues: The Summary

The Wire Wager Act

The Wire Wager Act, in its most basic sense, prohibits the use of a wire transmission to foster a gambling pursuit. What does this mean? Your guess is as good as mine, and as good as the people who wrote the legislation. Some lawyers argue that what this act means is that any interstate use of the internet that is related to placing or receiving bets is illegal. However, other lawyers believe that this cannot be applied to internet betting due to both the extensive use of wireless internet services and also, due to some vagary in the language, the act may only apply to sports event betting and not other types of betting. Most importantly, the specific language of the Wire Wager Act says that it applies only to those participating in the business of betting or wagering. That limits its impact to only sportsbooks and casinos and means that it can in no way be used against the actual bettor.

April 2005: Two important rulings are handed down regarding online sports betting. Chris Costigan, sums them up as follows:

“Firstly, the World Trade Organization upheld its decision in favor of Antigua, a tiny island nation that claimed the United States stymied its lucrative online gambling industry. Antigua contended that many online gambling operators left its jurisdiction as a direct result of the United States crackdown on operators and advertising venues.

A more critical ruling involved the United Kingdom, which now allows gambling companies to take bets online from the UK. While England’s stance on bookmaking is quite opposite of the United States, internet sports betting shops and online casinos were forced to operate offshore on nearby islands such as Gibraltar and the Isle of Man. The United Kingdom decision is viewed as a nod of approval by an industrial nation paving the way for internet gambling to thrive in a fully regulated environment, and the U.S. is most likely to recognize and respect its position.”

So, Can an American Bet Sports Legally?
The simple answer is there is an explicit law against online betting in only three states - Nevada, California, and Louisiana. Even so, NO American citizen has ever been arrested for betting on the internet.

Traditional Tarot

Monday, June 29th, 2009

The tradition of tarot is estimated to be over five hundred years old with archetypal roots that can be traced back to almost two thousand years. The traditional tarot has given way to the modern methods of divination, but it still remains a reservoir of ancient wisdom. The traditional tarot decks are the source of origin of the modern playing cards.

The history and origin of tarot is not very clear, though there are numerous theories supporting beliefs of its origin from various places such as China, India or Egypt. However, the oldest Tarot cards that are found date back to the fifteenth century and were found in Spain, Italy and France. According to historical evidence, traditionally, tarot cards were used as playing cards with pictures depicting conditions of life, liberal arts and virtues such as temperance and prudence. It is widely believed that initially tarot was not used as a means of divination.

The traditional tarot was adapted to contemporary styles and Rider-Waite Tarot, Aquarian Tarot, Crowley Thoth Tarot and Cagliostro Tarot are now considered the most elementary and traditional tarot card decks. These cards are designed on the basis of the historical cards and considered as ideal choices fro beginners. Rider-Waite Tarot was designed in 1909 by artist Pamela Coleman Smith, according to the specifications provided by Arthur Edward Waite. This deck contains seventy-eight cards with 56 minor arcana cards and 22 major arcana cards. However, this deck revolutionized the traditional decks by assigning pictures to the minor arcana cards. This deck is the world’s most popular Tarot deck, which is preferred by beginners as well as advanced students of Tarot.

However, most of the Tarot historians consider all the tarot decks that were in practice used before the nineteenth century as historical decks. Traditional tarot decks are considered to be closely based on the decks that were prevalent in the Golden Dawn era. The A. E. Waite and Pamela Coleman Smith’s deck is a fine example of traditional tarot decks. These tarot decks further gave rise to the more popular Rider-Waite deck and Thoth deck.

The Wall

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

“Mending Wall” seems to be a straightforward poem about the relationship between two neighbors repairing a useless wall; but despite t it’s unsophisticated appearance, the poem contains many interesting metaphors.

The main action is two neighbors fixing a rock wall. The rock wall is a human construction and the two are piling rocks that have been spilled by “the frozen-ground-swell under it”. It is a simple metaphor, and yet the main theme of the poem is the speaker pondering the sentiment: “something there is that doesn’t love a wall”. For Frost “something” cannot be represented by a single word. Through the poet figure Frost alludes to many things that can be represented by the word “something.” Similarly, the wall represents more than just an arbitrary boundary created by humans. It is clear the wall is not necessary between their two properties, the two are separated by a hill and have no cows to coral, and yet the speaker does more to initiate the maintenance of the wall than his neighbor. When the hunters turn the stones to expose the rabbit he comes “after them and repair” , and in the spring it is he that lets his neighbor know it is time to mend the wall. The futility of the wall only helps to reinforce the futility of repairing it year after year.

It is not just the speaker who is playing this game with himself. The neighbor also has a game that allows him to avoid confronting his own feelings. The only line that the neighbor speaks is “good fences make good neighbors”. He says this twice as if it were a mantra or affirmation to help him avoid thinking about the necessity of the wall. The speaker wants his neighbor to think beyond a simple saying, but to no avail. The neighbor is set in his ways; he has built a wall in his own mind that he mends by repeating his father’s saying.

When the poet figure confronts a trait in his neighbor that is similar to his own denial he sees it as black and negative. Despite the arbitrariness of the wall there is an underlying hubris in the speaker that prevents him from backing down in his confrontation with both nature and his nature. When he sees the same hubris in his neighbor he sees someone “who moves in darkness”. To move in darkness is to move in blindness. In this case the neighbor is blind to the uselessness of both fighting to maintain the wall and of its existence. The subconscious of the speaker is perhaps aware of this blind devotion to a ridiculous ritual and to break the silence; to speak openly of their sightless chore is to admit that he also has been blind to the futility of trying to overcome nature. One cannot overcome that of which one is apart.
It is doubtful that Frost’s only intent with this poem was to make a statement about the duality of humans and nature, but because the poem recounts a human experience that readers can relate to the complexities reveal more than deliberate statements of truth. That this poem is often read as a banal statement of the inanity of boundaries and cherished for the moralistic nugget it provides only further adds to its mystique. As such the poem can also be seen as a metaphor for the walls in the minds of the readers who fail to realize the richness of this poem.

Online Gambling Awards

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

Online gambling refers to gambling using the Internet. Of significance to note is that in 1997, there were only 32 online gambling sites. By 2003, the number of gambling sites went up to 1400. Today, there are more than 2000 gambling sites. The gambling world is changing and it is now becoming a socially acceptable pastime. Researches show that, on an average, top online gambling sites attract more than 9,000 players simultaneously and there are around 4,000,000 registered gamblers. This rise in online gambling led to the introduction of online gambling awards and this in turn led to increased competitiveness amongst online gambling operators.

There are hundreds of award categories for online gambling such as The Most Honest Online Casino, Best Online Casino, Best Slots Site, Best Poker Site, Best Bingo Site, Best Miscellaneous Gambling site, Best Free Games Site, Best Blackjack site, etc. Awards are also given for Best Online Gambling Personality, Best Gambling Software provider, etc. It is worth mentioning at this point that PokerRoom.com, an online poker card room founded in 1999, has won industry awards such as Poker Site of the Year from the UK Gambling Awards in 2006 and Top Poker Software from the Online Gambling Magazine Awards in 2005. These online gambling awards, in a way, intrigues people who work in the online gambling industry to work hard to stay close to the heart of the online player. This also enables the gambling software producers to innovate more challenging games and software. These awards are decided either on the basis of people’s poll online or through a panel of judges who are experts in online gambling industry. Various organizations involved in online gambling announce these awards and new categories are added every year. Besides these, various gambling sites have also introduced awards to create interest the players such as the best no-limit player, best heads-up player, etc.
