Discount London Theatre Tickets

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

West End theatre is a popular term for mainstream professional theatre in London, or sometimes more specifically for shows staged in the theatres of London’s “Theatreland”. Along with New York’s Broadway, West End theatre (not exclusively) is usually considered to represent the highest level of theatre. Seeing a West End show is a common tourist activity in London.

London theatres may well be thought of as being predominantly in the West End, but it is by no means an exclusive market, with superb theatres and productions being performed out of the limelight of the West End. Whichever theatre you visit, and whichever production you see, you will experience part of London’s theatrical culture. It is possible to buy cheap or discount London theatre tickets, but where to look?

One answer quite simply is to surf the web through the search engines and visit the numerous websites on offer. There are usually special offers available on most of them; some at half-price or even less. This however is ONLY one way and most websites or telephone booking companies will invariably charge a booking fee that can vary considerably - so shop around!

Several West End shows have adopted the National Theatre’s long-held policy of holding back a block of cheap seats for sale on the day of performance. Currently WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF, GUYS AND DOLLS, THE LION KING, BLUE MAN GROUP, MARY POPPINS, and BILLY ELLIOT have day seats. You might want to check with the theatre in advance to find out what time to begin queuing!

For those that are on a tight budget and can book at the last minute, you may want to visit the Society of London Theatres’ half-price “tkts” booth in Leicester Square, where tickets to that day’s performances of many shows are available at half price or less, plus a small charge. You cannot buy these tickets in advance or by telephone, but there is usually a good choice available.

Further special offers can be gained during the relatively quieter time from January through to March. Groups can also be eligible for discounts, usually from 6-8 or more - again shop around.

Visiting London’s West End theatres IS seeing part of England’s culture - so shop around and enjoy a great time!

Soap Operas - Why We Love Them and We Hate Them

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

When I was growing up, my sister was a huge Days of Our Lives fan, a fact that did not get past me without mockery. While she watched her soap opera, I made fun of her: I uttered snide comments as she talked about the show’s greatness, I hid the Soap Opera Digests she purchased at the grocery store, and I rolled my eyes whenever she rushed home from school to turn on DOOL, thus keeping me from watching a much more realistic show (Duck Tales) in the process. As much fun as I made of her, the tables were turned when I began watching Days of Our Lives in high school. Turns out, I kind of like it too. The vacuum of television series, it had a way of just sucking me in.

Still, Days of Our Lives, and really any soap opera, is not without its faults. Anything but grounded in actuality, soap operas have a bit of a conundrum going on. Their impracticalities make the shows both appealing and annoying, giving them a uniqueness no other genre can maintain. For the following reasons, they are shows we both love and hate.

SORAS: SORAS, or Soap Opera Rapid Aging Syndrome, is the term given for the plethora of characters who are three year old toddlers one year, and in their late twenties a mere two or three years later. We all know time flies, but not quite this quickly. While this concept is unbelievable, it is also a bit amusing, particularly when a child suddenly become older than the parent.

The Work Situation: It seems that most people on soap operas have very noble professions: police officers, doctors, scientists, businessman and women. Noble professions, but not busy ones. The amount of time these characters actually work may be incredulous, but it sure is appealing: I would love to be a soap opera character and only work an hour a week.

The Recurring Plot Lines: There are certain shows that need to be watched on a semi-regular basis in order to be followed. Soap operas aren’t one of them: the plot lines move at sloth-like speed. Ever plagued in drama, on any soap opera, USA there is sure to be the same serial killer, the same rabid arsonist, or the same devious mastermind wrecking havoc on the citizens of a town at any given time. But, then again, if these things didn’t exist, soap operas wouldn’t be soap operas. They’d be Leave it to Beavers.

The Expedited Judicial System: The judicial system in America is anything but fast, until it comes to soap operas. On soap operas, people aren’t only tried and convicted at ridiculously quick rates, but they are also put up for execution in the blink of an eye. Still, oddly enough, those who are put on death row are often only there because they are framed; the true soap opera villains seem to evade arrest at all times. Figures, they are celebrities.

The Pretty People: Perhaps the biggest reason we both love and hate soap operas is because of the pretty people. They are both fun to watch and hard on the ego. In an attempt to diminish the self esteem of viewers, nearly everyone on soap operas is gorgeous. Thanks a lot DOOL; I’m now going to go stick my head in the oven.

*For those unable to watch their favorite shows on television, IPOD and soap operas are in cahoots and many, including my beloved DOOL, are now available for downloading.

Sleeper Movie Review - Starring Woody Allen And Diane Keaton

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

“Sleeper” is a very funny sci-fi comedy, written and directed by and starring Woody Allen and also starring Diane Keaton. This film is very much in line with many of Woody’s early slapstic comedies like “Bananas”, “Take the Money and Run”, and “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex (But Were Afraid to Ask)”.

“Sleeper” takes place in the Western District in the year 2173, where Miles Monroe finds himself after being revived from what should have been a routine hernia operation in which he’d been accidentally frozen with liquid nitrogen. He is placed in custody of members of an underground movement aimed at overthrowing the repressive, totalitarian government. Miles must find and sabotage the Aries Project, a secret government project aimed at cloning the leader, all of which remains of him being his nose.

Miles must go into hiding in order to avoid capture by the authorities, who are after him. At one point he disguises himself as a robot. He’s taken to the house of Luna Schleisser (Keaton), where he acts as the butler for a party. He ends up accidentally burning the guests’ clothes, fighting off a huge glob of instant pudding, and getting high of the orb.

Miles soon reveals his true identity to Luna. At first she tries to turn him in, but later she goes along with him. Eventually he gets captured though, following which he is brainwashed and turned into a law-abiding member of society. Luna and some other members of the underground find him and restore him. They then devise and successfully carry out a plan to sabotage the Aries project and begin a socialist revolution.

Winter is Coming

Characters:

Dr. Sammy H. Jeffers
Ezra L. Davis
Robert Brandt (Children: One boy, two sisters)

Chapter One
The House

It looked like it was going to be a white Christmas. Sammy, who had all the false notions of a green one, seemed worried, but then the heat bill would be less if it was green, and less folks would die in Minnesota of the cold, thus, he welcomed the mild or if not so mild winter that was approaching, and if it be snowy weather all the same, but at present it was damp weather for the most part, and autumn was the best part of the year in Minnesota, with the changing of colors, that is, the color of the leaves, now dropping off the trees almost as fast as rain drops in a storm, quietly floating in the air, timidly hanging onto the trees. The place, his home had become friendly to him, the rigid skies, their frosty mornings, frost on the tiles on roofs of houses, his house in particular, his roof, yes, he beckoned to himself: one way or the other, winter was coming.

He and Ezra Davis got gradually more well each summer, winters seemed to take the best out of them; it was a relationship a mutual relationship, both owning the house, having their own privacy at any given time, the house was old, but well kept by them, Sammy living upstairs, the other down. Sammy had four rooms, and Ezra had six, thin-walled, a stairway that rounded going up to Sammy’s rooms, a garden in the back, and along side of the house, a crooked staircase going downstairs leading into the cellar, where the washroom was, and where the heating system was, an old time furnace, perhaps seventy-years old; except for occasionally meeting down there by accident, and infrequently wanting to talk of old times (for often they used he phone to do that), or planning something, and as time went on, they met less and less, spent their evening alone covered with a blanket and a good book to read, as every winter came creeping in, and by.

Roberta had gone from Munich, Germany to Vicenza, Italy; when Sammy asked for news of her, Ezra said, “She’s been to a number of countries over in Europe. Her private letters are all lost and I read them of course, and contain nothing of value.” Sammy was still thinking of something to say, he added, “We’re both used to it by now I suppose…I really don’t care that much anymore.”

Ezra, usually did follow up an such comments, and did not comment, and Sammy offered no more.

“Oh, incidentally, what happened to that woman who almost died at the Church—the one you saved I hear…?” Said Sammy to Ezra.

“Excuse me…what woman?” asked Ezra L.

“Well,” said Sammy smartly, “for once you can’t remember what you do, so I don’t feel so bad, we are both getting old. I heard you did quite well; in fact she’s living a more healthy life now. You know her family, the Brandt’s. She’s a widow, I fancy. She and her boy and daughter live out in White Bear Lake.”

“Oh, now I remember, that was a year ago…!” said Ezra.

“You still are a good doctor, old but good!” said Sammy H.

“The children are not very posed, rather uptight, sort of worried they may lose a gold mine if she gets married off at 78-years old, and the boy—Donald, isn’t the main problem, it’s the two girls, one far too good-looking for her own good, and the other not so good and older and more spoiled than the other two, she wants everything. I’m sure they will keep her away from the marriage alter, not that she’ll mind, I dare say.”

Sammy said casually, “I’ve run into her at the old Market Place downtown, during last summer, twice at the bagel stand, I like cheese on mine, and she eats hers with meat. I was going to ask what she does for activities, but of course I didn’t.”

“Ah yes, I’ve heard she likes to do this and that, but she never does, her kids again, fearful she might meet someone, her husband was killed in Korea, I think anyways—left her with enough money to live quietly on for the rest of her life I expect. I guess the kids don’t want any gigolos around her,” commented Ezra.

“Yes, I’m sure that is what it is,” said Sammy, and observed then after, that it was time for an afternoon rest (they both were talking over the phone, Sammy had called Ezra downstairs).

Neither Sammy nor Ezra had plans for Thanksgiving, they never did. Sammy H. who had a large family in Kansas City, was too ill and weak to go (nor was asked), and his family would not come up to Minnesota to visit—always too busy. Ezra was eager to receive his family whom lived in town, a daughter across the street, but they were now used to doing such events without him, so he took his medicine and fell to sleep as usual, a book in hand. They both really did not look forward to the festivities of the holidays, but rather had a sense of strangeness to it, a gloom by the prospect that their families were so preoccupied, they were too busy to know them—they had forgot who they were, perhaps a phone call, if indeed they did that, or could remember to do it, but seldom did they do it.

Roberta, who was all she could hoe for, decorated her house accordingly, as she had done for a half century without her husband, now long dead, saving her cut out turkeys and other ornaments. And she was mutually grateful for her children who kept her company most of the time. She told her children she was saving to go to Las Vegas, she liked to get away, and gambling was a kind of sport for her, something to do, and it seemed safe for her children to allow it, since she went alone. Actually, she wanted to go on Thanksgiving, and her children didn’t like that idea, they wanted her around for the grandchildren, perhaps do a little baby sitting, if time allowed, and she cooked a good huge pot of chicken soup with the turkey usually.

It was the Sunday before Thanksgiving, and she received a card in the mail, it was from Sammy, it was written very neatly, “When are you coming to Church next?” it read, then she turned it over, something seemed unusual, it was a talking card, it seemed to irritate her, that he could not make a phone call or have talked to her in the past in Church, thinking this was not adult behavior, and she pushed the card onto the floor from the end table, where the phone was.

It was but a week to Thanksgiving, and she could hardly remember what Sammy looked like, the few times they met, at the Market and church, and during each of those times had but a few minutes encounter, they had little to offer each other, so she said to herself, it was a mere coincidence, and now he writes a card, what is he contriving, to bond with her, drag her out in to the woods at 78-years old, he talked very little to her, if at all, was all she could remember, and what he had to say, was really about nothing, apart from he said he was, or used to be a doctor. Now he writes a card, is frank on it, writes as if he knew her for years, she wanted to tell him to dry up, she could be outspoken if need be. His structure, his face was not vivid to her even, emphatic if anything, unclear, only that sparkling concentration could she remember he had.

As soon as she had pushed the card onto the floor, it did not resolve a thing in her mind, it was not a pleasant moment, she was diffident for the moment, waiting perhaps for the card to leap back up, to finish the reading, she had only read a few lines, there was a few more to be read, but if she picked it up, would it strike another discord with her, a good question she thought.

Now and again Sammy would stare at the phone, waiting for it to right. He did it, he told himself, I did it, not quite mannishly, but calculated suddenness, that is what it was, he told himself, he surprised himself he did it, sent the card, the one she noticed, and now ignored, which Sammy of course didn’t know. Meanwhile, Ezra, called her on the phone, he was not as shy as Sammy.

That night it got very cold, Ezra had to bring extra blankets out of the storeroom, and Sammy had a hard time going to sleep, he woke up several times to go to the bathroom, his eyelids half opened, pale from stiffness, and cold air in the house. The windows were letting in a draft, which circulated the household, almost producing crystals of frost on the windowsills. He rubbed his hands to thaw them out. Looked at the phone, ‘she didn’t call,’ he told himself, ‘…but perhaps later on.’

Sammy looked out his window, the first real frost had come, it was thick on the roses, thick like cat fuzz, the leaves on the trees hand white cobwebs of frost other veins, or so it seemed. The bird nests in the trees in front of the house were white rimed. Sammy and Ezra stood in at their windows looking out towards the road, eyeing the frost, the trees, the roses. Feeling the tingling cool air of the house, looking, just looking, thinking another day closer to Thanksgiving, and Christmas beyond that, and a New Year; Sammy would be 87, and Ezra, 83, before the New Year started.

Roberta knew the early frost would turn over soon to be the first snow fall, pure and fresh it always seemed to her, the first snow fall, the grass crisp like wool, she rushed not to be late for church, she had to drive her old 1972-Ford Galaxy 500, yellow in color, and had but a quarter of an hour to make it to church. She had forgotten where she put the keys, a lapse in mind for the moment. Sammy had dressed up in a black suit and black tie, exquisitely. His mind was not much concerning private lie, but he wondered if she would be there, if if so, wound her children also be with her.

Walking to the corner he saw the bus, it stopped, waited for him to get on, “Jackson and Wheelock” he told the bus driver. Perhaps it was obvious to the bus driver, thought Sammy, he’d forget the address, he had to look at a piece of paper, but old age, he told himself, cuts into the brain, the short term memory, and leaves all the long term for man to go over, and over and over, it was a way, he thought, for God to punish man for all the wrongs he done, thus, he had them to remembered like it or not. And now, old as the hills, he was too old to do wrong.

He saw the brown of the telephone poles go one by one pass him, the buildings flash in a clap of an eye, bulk and solid the buildings were, walls, and streets, and frozen gardens now, crystallized with frost, passed the eyes.

Chapter Two
The Church

The streets were still stolid, not icy yet, under the frost was a sheet of sand and salt the city had sprayed the night before in fear the first snow would fall and ice build up on the streets by early morning, while folks were going to church, thus creating a crisis with accidents, Minnesota was good for prevention in this area.

The bus stopped, and Roberta parked her car in the lot, and walked a few steps to the church doors. Sammy walked up Rice street to Wheelock, to Jackson, took a right, and a hundred feet or so was the church, he took the steps up the embankment to the front door, and Roberta was walking in from the side of the church to the front door at the same time. He left this overcast inside the church, in the coatroom, and buttoned up his woolen sweater to the rim of the bottom of his neck.

They both found themselves unexpectedly by one another as they started walking down the isle to be seated, perhaps pleased, but neither one made a full glance at the other, Roberta said conventionally, “Thank you for the card, it was charming.” Now she questioned why she said that, I mean, it wasn’t charming a week ago, amazed she was at what she said, “I’m glad you liked it. I hope you are not telling me that to pacify me, because it was kind of grubby handwriting.” She laughed, he was right she thought, it was grubby.

“It’ll do, for a doctor!” she said.

“I wish I thought like that,” Sammy commented. Wish the sun would come out and stay, but you know these winters, I mean fall’s the time we get out of fall and winter, I’ll be another year older, at my age every year counts as triple.”

“I was thinking that, also.” She moved a little ahead of Sammy, and scooted over to a pew, looking at him, she waved him along, to join her. Some kind of a thrill excitement came over both of them, a buzz, with a tinge of laughter. They sat for a minute tense and silent. Almost as if they were both empty of words, then suddenly he dragged out some thoughts, her fingers tapping on her bible, “I see here the sermon is going to be on ‘…irrational feelings,’ the preacher here has an attitude for psychology issues if I recall right.”

“I hope it helps the young folks here.” Said Roberta.

He looked at his watch it was ten minutes to nine, “A few minutes more.”

She paused for a moment, watching him fix his tie, move his watch about on his wrist, she looked deep into his blue eyes from the side, the shadows around them, almost dark, and his copper skin from the sun, it was fading. Roberta broke out with a heavy sigh, looked about, caught the light coming through the windows, then looking up from the windows to the ceiling, “Did you know they painted them angels on the ceiling a year ago?” she said.

He didn’t speak for the next five minutes, his expressions showed insignificance, so she examined, and felt, but it was the autumn of 1989. Sammy felt as if, without warning, a squeezing hand around his heart. Then with insignificant seriousness, she said, “Try to work up a bit of cheer, the holidays are close. You seem a bit anti-social, if not sad.”

“Yes, I know. I couldn’t figure out the word myself, but that will do just fine, I need to overlook so much. Oh well, let me try by asking you if you’d like to join me for Thanksgiving?”

He stopped abruptly then, and turned his eyes to her, folks were filling up the pews now, and the preacher had stepped out of a door, alongside the podium.

“I virtually go no place without my children, or by myself, never with a man alone, since my husband has passed away, especially not on the spot.”

“Roberta you absurd woman what are you doing asking me to sit here with you then?” Said Sammy.

“We are just beginning.” She said politely.

Sammy thought how different his vice was now, it must sound unrelated, expansive. It was really not his sky style today it was something new for him to be so open with his wants.

“Perhaps I slightly overdone my expectations, but I’m not thoroughly anti-social you see, and I’m working on humor.”

“For some reason, I do not feel prepared for this encounter,” said Roberta.

“I tried to snatch up the situation; I was hoping you would consider Turkey at my house, and chicken soup.”

“Why, Dr. Sammy H. Jeffers. I was thinking that surely we could be good friends, and cum about perhaps. I have often thought it would be fun to do things with another person—a man, but men always become so impatient, twenty-four hours after I meet you, from what I remember, and what my children tell me nowadays it is even worse. You mustn’t let this be a nuisance for us.”

She looked at him, as she spoke, with friendly regret. Thinking this would be their last meeting, which was really their first; and an unusual one at that. It would seem the words and the looks would have needed to be a little more graceful, pleasant, but this was work for both of them, and new.

Sammy said, “I was just hoping you could come, and I could admire your loveliness.”

“At our age loveliness is not in the mirror, as much as I’d like it to be, or in a gracious figure, as I once had, but in dress and dignity and taste, softness, we expect it, it’s rarity is a spice we need, and it is of course a realistic work of art for a man to produce this. Otherwise why misuse my time; I’m somewhat happy as I am.”

Sammy smiled, “I’m working at it,” he said, and she laughed, gave a societal smile; her beauty did seem to withdraw itself from inside of her. “You are a quite hopeless romantic, I’m afraid. I suggest you unbutton your sweater, it is getting hot in here.”

He was starting to sweat, “Of course” he said,–she then turned courteously toward the preacher, he was about to address the congregation.

TMI: Watch Out For This Dreaded New Syndrome During The Holidays!

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

New syndromes show themselves over the years. What one generation fails to recognize, the next identifies as a truly life-altering condition. I think it’s time for us to add a new condition to the list.

First, let me define syndrome. According to Dictionary.com, one definition of a syndrome is ” A group of symptoms that collectively indicate or characterize a disease, psychological disorder, or other abnormal condition.”

In English, please? Your body or behavior show signs of being irregular or strange.

Before I tell you what I call this group of abnormal actions, take this quiz and see if you have it. Do you have the new syndrome I propose? Here is a quiz:
1. Do you share intimate details about your life with total strangers?
2. Do you answer a yes/no question with a detailed analysis of all possibilities?
3. Do you announce personal details about your health or bodily functions at parties?

If you answered “YES” to any of these questions, you might be making others suffer because of your self-revealing disorder.

What is it, you might ask? I call it Too Much Information Syndrome, or TMI.

The worst thing about TMI is that, while those who have it suffer no ill effects, you are torturing the people around you by telling us much more than we want to know about you.

Some people are TMI magnets. They do not have TMI but attract others who suffer from the disorder. My mother is a TMI magnet. The dubious honor of possessing this particular power appears to be genetic. My mother passed it along to me. Thanks, Mom. Love you too.

Let me explain. No, there is too much. Let me summarize.

Mom used to work as a hair stylist in Chicago. You know how strangely people act under the influence of the full moon? Well, Mom had a permanently full moon hanging over her styling station. There might be three available operators, but all the people who shared every intimate detail of their lives, or who were otherwise odd, went to her.

She still has the knack, even here in the beautiful Ozarks. One time when she was in Branson, an elderly woman pushing a man in a wheelchair came up and said, “I tell you, this man right here has still got it!” She wiggled her hips to make the meaning clear. “His furnace is still blazing hot!” She fanned herself dramatically.

TMI. Oh boy! She has a bad case.

I, having genetically received the power to attract TMI, was in a grocery store with my guide dog, Molly. A man came up wanting to pet her. He told me, “I could kill a man, but I could never harm an animal.”

TMI. He has it too.

One time I had a “stray” with no family in town over for a holiday dinner. Our guest regaled us all with tales of the three times her hip went out of its socket. One of them involved going to the bathroom.

If I want to know that much, I will ASK! The topic was a real conversation killer until somebody – bless her - changed the subject.

A server at one of the dinner shows told my mom and me, “My daughter died a few months ago. She used to love this show. She’d come two or three times a year.”

These are not evil people. They mean well, but they are obviously too self-absorbed to be aware of the evidence that a TMI attack is in progress.

Clear signs that people have lost interest include: glazed-over eyes, saying “uh-huh” distractedly, wandering off to do something else, rapidly changing the subject, picking up a magazine, laying hands over you and praying for the demons to set you free, and rapidly walking away.

If you suffer from Too Much Information Syndrome, there is help. Ask someone a question and LISTEN to the answer.

If you are a magnet like me and mom, our condolences. It’s a curse – and a gift. When I am the victim of a TMI attack, I say a kind word or a prayer for the poor afflicted soul.

#65 NC State Wolfpack Preview

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

Spring practices are in the books and fall camps will be here before you know it so that means getting an early jump on the 2006 NCAA football season. Knowing the teams now will save you time in August. We go from worst to first in this 2006 College Football Preview.

#65 – NC State Wolfpack 7-5 SU 5-6 ATS

Fargo’s Take Things were looking grim in Raleigh last season after a humbling loss at Wake Forest that dropped the Wolfpack to 2-4, putting head coach Chuck Amato’s job in serious jeopardy. Insert new starting quarterback Marcus Stone and NC State turned its season around by winning four of its final five regular season games, including a huge win at Florida St., becoming bowl eligible and then shutting out South Florida in the Meineke Car Care Bowl. That momentum will be huge heading into this season as the Wolfpack must find a way to replace three first-round draft picks from their outstanding defense. The cupboard isn’t bare however as the stop unit will still be very solid but it’s up to the offense to become a bigger factor. NC State failed to score more than 24 points in all of its games against 1-A competition last season and that will not get the job done this year. Amato will be hearing grumblings from the Wolfpack faithful if they get off to yet another slow start.

Returning Starters on Offense – 5 The NC State offense was terrible last year plain and simple. The defense bailed the unit out on numerous occasions and even though the defense should be strong yet again, the offense is going to have to win some games in 2006. When Stone was entered into the starting lineup, the Wolfpack changed its offensive gameplan from a passing team to a grind it out running team and the new system worked. NC State will do the same this season as it returns two of the best young backs in the conference in Andre Brown and Toney Baker, both sophomores. The offense isn’t going to fool any defense and it will be up to Stone to become more efficient in the passing game to keep those defenses honest. The offensive line is a strength and should open plenty of holes and provide good pass protection. The Wolfpack finished 103rd in total offense and 95th in scoring offense and those rankings obviously need to improve.

Returning Starters on Defense – 5 Replacing three first round draft picks is tough for any team but the Wolfpack still have an experienced defense that will once again be a force. The loss of Mario Williams, the top pick in the NFL draft, along with two other players from the defensive line will be impossible to replace but the line has the ability to remain tough against the run. Freshman defensive end Willie Young is a star in the making, the likely defensive newcomer of the year in the ACC, and will contribute right away. The linebackers are experienced while the secondary will be the strength of the unit with three starters coming back. The rushing defense, ranked 14th last season, has allowed 3.8 ypc or less in each of the last five seasons. This defense finished 12th in scoring and 8th overall and while replicating those rankings will not happen, the potential is there to remain one of the top units in the ACC.

Schedule If there is one thing that can get NC State to a second straight bowl games, it’s the schedule. The ACC is one of the most difficult conferences in the country but the Wolfpack caught plenty of breaks. Overall, they have seven home games and five of those come in the first six games of the season, setting up a possible fast start to the year. NC State opens with Appalachian St. and Akron at home before traveling to Southern Miss in a pivotal non-conference contest. Then it’s back home for three straight games, all within the conference, starting off with the two toughest home games of the year against Boston College and Florida St. Four of the next five are on the road but three of those, at Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina are all winnable. The Wolfpack close at home against East Carolina. The biggest break in the slate is missing Miami and Virginia Tech.

You can bet on… This is not your pass happy offense anymore. The days of Philip Rivers are long gone as the Wolfpack will rely on a strong rushing attack and solid defense to get the job done. Last season, that was very evident as 10 of their 11 lined games all went under the total. It would not be surprising to see that continue as the totals will be low but they can’t come down too much. NC State has been one of the best road underdogs around, going 13-1 ATS over the last six seasons when receiving points away from home. The only loss was last season at Boston College when it was getting four and a half and lost by 20. They will be road dogs in at least two contests starting with the game against the Golden Eagles. Career Information about Photography

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

Career information about photography is important to access and focus on initially because it is a competitive market where the work is often attractive to many people. The photographer must have “a good eye”, imagination, and some creativity to do well in this field. That’s not all. Photographers love going into their own business. Accordingly, they must be able to maintain a business and to take advantage of opportunities provided by rapidly changing technologies. While seeking career information about photography you should first speak to one of your local photographers for information. You can ask questions about the job market in your area and how much training was involved before he/she considered themselves ready. You’ll find your local photographer will offer you insight that will be helpful in most cases.

What as a photographer do you plan on achieving? Most would agree, the photographer is an artist, historian, and news event person. Perhaps you had already planned on your career and how you wish to achieve it. Career information about photography will prepare you for specific jobs but you should be aware of other elements related to the work. A photographer produces and preserves images that paint a picture, tell a story, or record an event. The successful photographer is required to have the ability to present a subject to achieve a particular effect while also selecting the appropriate equipment. A good photographer may enhance the subject’s appearance with natural or artificial light, shoot the subject from an interesting angle, draw attention to a particular aspect of the subject by blurring the background, or perhaps using different lenses to produce desired levels of detail at various distances.

This is just an example of some of the requirements that a good photographer should possess. Career information about photography will vary according to what type of photography interests you. Underwater photography is becoming an exciting field of unexplored areas. Other photographers specialize in areas such as portrait, commercial and industrial, scientific, news, or fine arts photography.

Portrait Photographers: The one’s we see most often who usually come with those special family events. They normally take individual pictures, group pictures and often work in their own studios. A lot of photographers specialize in taking wedding pictures, religious ceremonies, or school pictures.

Commercial and Industrial: Career information about photography includes professionals who specialize in commercial and industrial photography. These photographers take pictures of various subjects, such as buildings, models, merchandise, artifacts, and landscapes. Why would a photographer go around taking these pictures? This is a specialized field wherein a lot of money can be made. The pictures are used in a variety of media, including books, reports, advertisements, and catalogs. The industrial photographer is usually hired in advance and knows what his assignment will be. He does not take pictures and try to find a buyer. The industrial photographer takes pictures of machinery, products, workers, and company officials. The pictures taken are usually for a specific purpose. In the future these pictures help engineer’s analysis projects, publicity, or records of equipment development or deployment, such as placement of an offshore oil rig.

Field of Science: Career information about photography is common in the field of science. The recording of scientific data and procedures is often done by a photographer. The field of unusual phenomena or sometimes called ghost hunting uses special type of equipment and is necessary to help prove the existence of perhaps a haunting. Many things evolve when you work in the scientific field that is why a photographer must have knowledge in one or more areas of engineering, medicine, biology, or chemistry.

Photojournalism: Photojournalists are people who take pictures of newsworthy people, places, and sporting events. They are news photographers who often cover political and community events for newspapers, journals, magazines, or television.

Career information about photography would not be complete unless I reminded you of working conditions. The working conditions vary considerably from one type of a job to another. For instance, photographers who work for the government and advertising studios usually work a 5-day, 40 hour week. News photographers often work long, irregular hours and must be available on short notice. Some photographers work part time or on variable schedules.

One last thing - Career information about photography should include the fact that a lot of photographers spend a small amount of time actually taking pictures because they spend a lot of time editing photographs on a computer and trying to find new business especially when they are self-employed.

Terrestrial Translator

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

Star Trek has a wonderful device called the universal translator. It translates spoken and written alien languages into English, and would probably translate different human languages, if there were more than one in that specifically created future. Though it doesn’t know how to translate isolated foreign words like Russian or French, it is a truly marvelous technology. Almost never fails. Never loses power, even when the rest of the ship does, same as the artificial gravity. No moving parts, in fact, no parts at all. It is just ‘around’, always there, always doing its job without anyone having to think about it. A little like the Internet is becoming now, just a banal fact of life.

Sadly, it is based on the false premise that words in other languages have a one for one relationship with words in English. That Turkish doesn’t have two words for ‘know’, and Russian doesn’t have two words for ‘Blue’. It dictates that languages don’t have both an inclusive and an exclusive ‘we’. (We (inclus) = ‘Me, you, and maybe other people’. we (exclus) = ‘Me, and other person or people excluding you’.) There is a false belief that all languages have only singular and plural constructs, and not up to five categories. Some languages have dual as well as singular and plural, and different categories so ‘every computer’ clearly means either ‘every computer in sight’ or it means ‘every computer that exists, has existed, and ever will exist’, but the two forms of ‘every computer’ can’t be confused with each other.

We’ve started building our own ‘universal translators’ which naturally are on the Internet. I can have paragraphs translated into French or German, or from French to German. Or, I can get whole websites in other languages translated for me. I’ve never had a website translated, but I sometimes get phrases translated when I want a fictional character to say something in another language. I sometimes, just for fun, translate something through two other languages and then back into English to see how good online translations are getting. It is also to reassure myself that computers won’t completely replace humans in the next week or two.

This is my standard signature block after a computer has translated it into French (using translation2.paralink.com/):

Original English version: Allan T. Price is a creative writer working at ̈.Net: ‘The web-hosting company for humans.’ ̈.Net is working hard to help humanity experience the power and freedom to develop their own part of the Internet, to share their information and connect with anyone, anywhere, anytime.

Now I get that French version translated into Spanish:
Allan T. El precio es un autor creativo que trabaja en M6. Red: ¿? la compañía acogedora web para los humanos. ¿? M6. La red trabaja duramente para ayudar a la humanidad a conocer el poder y la libertad de desarrollar su propia parte de Internet, compartir su información y comunicar con alguien, dondequiera, anytime.

Finally, that Spanish version back into English:
Allan T. The price is a creative author who works in M6. Network? The cozy web company for the human beings? M6. The network works hardly to help the humanity to know the power and the freedom of developing its own part of Internet, sharing his information and communicating with someone, anywhere, anytime.

So, I become ‘Le prix’, ‘El precio’ or ‘The Price’. Web-hosting becomes ‘cozy web’, and ‘anyone’ becomes ‘someone’. On the whole, the meaning gets a little mangled, but still survives.

Let’s use two more famous pieces of text and see how they become after computer translation.

‘We consider these truths by itself to be understood, that all men are equally created, that they were subsidized with its founder the certain rights not a subject sale which are under this life, freedom and prosecution Gappiness. - that to guarantee these rights, the governments are constructed among men, its fair authorities of the consent adjusted allocating,’

‘We of people of the United States to form more perfect association, we appoint validity, we assure internal silence, we care of the general protection, we promote the general social security, and we guarantee approval of freedom to ourselves and to our future generation, you accept really and you base this structure for the United States America.’
They’re kind of close, but definitely not close to being exactly the same.

Thanks to the Internet, and improving translation programs, English speakers will soon realize the true diversity of other languages. It will become commonly understood that you can have an inclusive and an exclusive ‘we’, or dual and universal as well as singular and plural meanings. We’ll know that Turkish has two different words for the English word ‘know’, seçmek - to perceive or distinguish, and bilmek - to be informed of or be aware of, and no word covering both ‘perceive’ and ‘be informed’. So if someone tells you in Turkish ‘I know he stole it’, you always know whether or not they witnessed the crime, or were simply told who did it. Like English speakers for a millennium or more, people will quietly ‘mug’ these other languages, and ‘rummage around in their pockets’ adding what they find useful to English.

At the same time, people all around the word might ‘smooth’ their language out to make them easier for translation software, choosing words that can be easily and clearly translated into other languages. Eventually this would create an easily shared, translated meta-language for International communication, at least when lawyers aren’t involved. Plus, comedies of the future can have people meet face-to-face for the first time and find they don’t speak a shared language. They could have the characters standing facing each other, sending auto-translated text messages via their palmtops while the audience laughs at the incredibly zany situation.

Diwali Decorations

Friday, November 28th, 2008

There are a number of traditional decorative items that are employed during Deepavali in by Hindu to decorate their houses. Apart from bringing a new look to the houses, the decorations also bring a pleasant feeling of the festival. The decorations add to the joy of the occasion. Decoration is one of the many activities associated that mark the festival.

The first item of decoration is the string of mango leaves tied at the top of the main door to the house. Mango leaves are a symbol of newness. People tie the string early in the morning. Apart from the string of mango leaves, Torans or Door Hangings are decked on the main door to the house and the puja room (the room in which the deity is housed) where Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped. The Door Hangings are handmade and are ornamented with embroidery, bells, beads, shells, mirrors etc. Door Hangings or Torans are in vogue these days and make a decent decoration for Diwali.

The word Diwali is a modified form of the Sanskrit word ‘Deepavali’, which means a row of lamps. That is why the lamps are an inherent part of the festival. For Diwali, small oil lamps made of clay are lighted and arranged in rows. The lamps are made in different sizes and patterns, varying from the complex Rajasthani types to the plain earthen lamps of clay. The rows of lamps adorn the house on either side of the entrance. This arrangement is made to guide Goddess Lakshmi when she visits every house, right from the pompous palace to the humble hut. Lights also indicate the victory of light over darkness.

Aromatic candles are another decorative item for Diwali. They are available in many shapes and designs. Lighting candles and placing them in a glass pot full with water to float and decorating them with flower petals is an auspicious activity on Diwali day. Diwali lanterns and lamps are made in many shapes from different materials such as clay, glass, brass and marble. These Diwali decorations make a room aesthetically pleasant. Diwali lamps are marvelous gifts to order for self and near and dear. These lights hang from balconies, are wound around a tree or arranged as series of bulbs. They create an exciting atmosphere with their sparkling radiance.

Wall Hangings with the images of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi are another popular Diwali decorative item. These hangings with the artistic and cultural touch are favored by people. Cloth panels with embroidery also form part of Deepavali decorations. Idols of Gods and Goddesses are an inherent part of this grand festival. Rangolis are another beautiful art form. Different patterns with innovative combinations adorn the entrances to houses with young girls competing to outdo each other. All the places will have a charged atmosphere during Diwali celebrations.
