Coby Karl Back To Getting In Shape After Cancer Surgery

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

On April 2, 2007 Coby Karl, the son of Nuggets coach George Karl, underwent a seven hour surgery to remove cancerous lymph nodes. This was his second operation in just 13 months.

However, Coby is now back to basketball practicing and one saw him dribbling and shooting drills in the far corner of the Nuggets’ practice court.

Coby is Boise State basketball player and he said that he gets tired after practices but labelled it as a good thing because it shows that he was getting better.

After the surgery, Coby is feeling much better and he is slowly getting back into shape and gradually the 3 inch surgery scar below his chin is beginning to fade.

Coby said getting back into conditioning was tough but he also said that it would be tough only in the beginning.

Coby was in town to visit his father and he took time to watch a couple of Nuggets’ playoff game against the San Antonio Spurs. He is now returning to Boise State where he is set to graduate in May 2007 with a degree in mass communications.

After his graduation, Coby intends to concentrate just on basketball and he is hoping to be selected in the NBA draft when it begins in June 2007.

Coby now just hopes that NBA teams actually like him. There is no doubt his father does but Coby thinks he is biased. Coby hopes to play well at the NBA pre-draft camp to impress some NBA teams which will improve his chances of being selected.

In January 2006, Coby was diagnosed with papillary carcinoma, which is a treatable form of cancer. Three months later he had his thyroid removed and he underwent chemotherapy to kill any remaining cancer cells. However, the cancer returned. He is due to have a blood test done to check whether he is recovering but he does not spend his time living in fear of the cancer.

Coby finished third on Boise State’s career scoring list with 1,698 points. He is also the career leader in the number of games played, 3 pointer made and attempted.

Basic Steps to Playing Blackjack

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

Whether you’re playing blackjack online or you’re under the roof of one of a beautiful casinos in Las Vegas or Monte Carlo, the good news about blackjack is that the rules are not only universal, they’re also universally easy to understand. In fact, a kid of eight can easily master the skills necessary for winning blackjack. Better yet, blackjack is very fun to play, so it’s rare that you’ll find yourself bored when playing this game.

The Primary Objective of the Game

In poker, the primary objective would have to be something vague such as “getting the best hand possible”. But when it comes to blackjack, the objective of the game is simple: the cards with an equivalent value to 21 or the one nearest to it wins. Simple to understand, isn’t it?

Who is Higher and Who’s Lower?

In poker, you have to familiarize yourself with what a flush looks like and what a full house compromises, then remember which one is higher. In blackjack, however, there are no card combinations to memorize. In fact, all you have to do is compute what the value of your cards is and if you still need to improve on it or stick with what you have.

The counting system for blackjack is just like how it is with Lucky 9, only it’s a wee bit – emphasizing the wee here – more complicated. Cards numbering two to ten are counted as they are. Face cards – that would be the royal couple, the king and queen, and of course, the third wheel, the jack – are equivalent to ten while the ace can be calculated as one or eleven. You alone shall be able to determine whether your cards would be better off with an ace worth one point or eleven.

Who Wins and Who Doesn’t?

In poker, people who believe that their cards are not that strong or up to par with their competitors’ immediately choose to fold or give up. In blackjack, while there’s no such thing as folding, there is such as thing as an immediate game loss - this is what happens when your cards are busted. Cards are busted when the value totals something more than twenty-one.

If you have busted cards, you lose right away or have to wait for the next round to play.

Betting

Before you can play blackjack, you must always place your bet on the table first.

Lastly, if your first two cards are identical, you can divide them and play them separately.

Stuff, Accumulating Things

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

STUFF
Seemingly unnecessary
Terribly consuming
Ugly and self-absorbing
Fun to buy for whatever reason
Finally forgotten rather quickly
Why is it human beings
Like to purchase so much stuff?
Does it make us feel powerful?
Does it make us feel resourceful?
Certainly such accumulation
Is by no means useful
Neither is it terrible
As I suppose it is self-help
A therapy of sorts
Whereby we congratulate ourselves
Invest or celebrate me for a moment
Move beyond the rat race
To find some peace in a particular place
To develop some pride, save some face
Show ourselves to be owners
Lest we feel and experience some disgrace
You know the feeling
When you compare yourself or your toys
To others be they friends or foes
Such consumption doesn′t help you to grow
On the contrary, in fact it diminishes
You as a person and hinders your progression
As you buy, to yourself you often also lie
Telling yourself how this will make you feel better
By morning however
You usually don’t feel better
And by the end of the month
You’re left with some new bills to pay
If you′re strapped financially
This thwarts your ability to play
As monetarily you must make ends meat
Nevertheless the scurry for stuff continues
As you compete with the Jones’ family
Try to self-actualize and be all you can be
Do all you can do, buy all you can buy
Incurring increasing debts until you die
Living a life of pointlessly accumulating stuff
Is undoubtedly a deception and foul lie
Therefore next time before you buy
Ask yourself truly what you’re seeking and why?

The Impact of the Internet on Contemporary Literature

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

Literature basically is everything that has ever been written. Anything from the earliest poems of Homer, to today’s web pages, can be considered literature. But for a specific sense, there are various kinds of literature. Literature can be written in a specific language, like English Literature or be written by a specific culture, such as African Literature. But literature really means more than printed words and the internet certainly is a part of literature. I should note that the word literature comes from the French phrase belles-lettres, which means “beautiful writing”. When a piece of work is called literature, it is usually considered a great work of art. The internet literature does not necessarily have to be this way for the fact that no one controls the internet literature. In the following essay I am going to speak about the impact of the internet on literature of nowadays.

There are two main classes of literature which are also present on the internet: fiction and nonfiction. Fiction is writing that an author creates from the imagination. Authors may include personal experience, or facts about real people or events, but they combine these facts with imagined situations (Moran, 45). In non-internet literature the project undergoes at least some sort of censorship in terms of what words can be used, yet the internet allows the authors to put anything they desire on the web site and enjoy it. Most fiction is narrative writing, such as novels and short stories. Fiction also includes drama and poetry. Nonfiction is factual writing about real-life situations. The principal forms of nonfiction include the essay, biography, autobiography, and diary (Browner, 90). The internet presents a new forms—internet pages, or internet books.

People read literature for a variety of reasons. The most common reason for reading is pleasure. People read to pass the time, or for information and knowledge. Through literature, people meet characters they can identify with, and sometimes find solutions for their own problems. With literature, a person can often understand situations they could not otherwise understand in real life (Koehler, 28). Often, just the arrangement of the words can be enjoyable, just as a child likes the sound of “Ring Around the Rosie”, even though they might not understand what the words mean. There are four elements of literature: characters, plot, theme, and style. A good author has the ability to balance these elements, creating a unified work of art. The characters make up the central interest of many dramas and novels, as well as biographies and autobiographies. A writer must know each character thoroughly and have a clear idea about each ones look, speech, and thoughts. The internet literature is not difficult to create for the fact that unlike “traditional” literature the internet literature requires minimal start up costs (Moran, 47). And because reading usually involves convenience, at some point of time one would not be surprised to see convenient electronic devices that could be transported anywhere and would download books from the internet and present them in digital format.

Motivation is the reason for characters actions. A good writer will be sure that the motives of a character are clear and logical. The internet writers do not have to be this way, they are not controlled and they hardly risky anything by publishing online. Setting is where a character’s story takes place. The plot is built around a series of events that take place within a definite period. It is what happens to the characters. No rules exist for the order in which the events are presented. A unified plot has a beginning, middle, and an end. In literary terms, a unified plot includes an exposition, a rising action, a climax, and a denouement, or outcome. The exposition gives the background and situation of the story (Browner, 93). The rising action builds upon the exposition. It creates suspense, or a reader’s desire to find out what happens next. The climax is the highest point of interest, also a turning point of a story. The denouement is the conclusion. The theme is the basic idea expressed by a work of literature. It develops from the interplay of character and plot. A theme may contain morals, to warn the reader to lead a better life or a different kind of life. The internet literature does not have to be this way at all because no one controls it. The write take minimal risk in terms of investment, yet possibly can find readers from all over the world, which can pay for the e-book and download it to their own computers, is very high (Moran, 49).

A serious writer strives to make his work an honest expression of sentiment, or true emotion. They avoid sentimentality, which means giving too much emphasis to emotion or pretending to feel an emotion. A writer of honest emotion does not have to tell the reader what to think about a story. A good story will direct the reader to the author’s conclusion. Style is the way a writer uses words to create literature. It is difficult to enjoy a story’s characters or plot without enjoying the author’s style (Browner, 98). The style of an author is as important as what he is trying to say. Point of view, or the way a story is presented, is another part of style. A writer may tell a story in the first person, using the pronoun I, as though the narrator were a major or minor character in it. Or, the writer may use the third person method, in which the narrator stands apart from the characters and describes the action using such pronouns as he and she. There are two types of third person views: limited and omniscient. In the third person limited point of view, the narrator describes the events as seen by a single character. In the third person omniscient, or all knowing, point of view, the narrator reports on what several characters are thinking and feeling. Reading is an intently personal art. There are no final rules for judging a piece of writing. Often, people’s judgment of a work can change as taste and fashion change. Yet the classics continue to challenge readers’ imaginations and give ageless advice. Shakespeare will most likely be as popular a hundred years from now as he is today. That is power of literature. Literature is timeless (Moran, 53).

It should be noted that literature can have many and different values on a person and it is the internet that allows literary values to be delivered to the audience without any barriers. It is all depending on the story and the value or moral issue the author wants, you, the reader to get out of it. The value literature had on me was actually hard to put into words. But to understand the value of literature you must know the definition of value and literature. Value has many meanings but there is two that relate (Browner, 102). Worth in usefulness or importance to the possessor and a principle, standard, or quality considered worthwhile or desirable. Literature is a body of writings in prose or verse. Literature produces value because it is basically an analysis of an experience or situation (Koehler, 30). I got a different value out of each story. With Mark Twain’s The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn it showed me that one does not have to be civilized or conform to the ideas of society to become cultured or mature. With Huck Finn he ran away from everything that was considered civilized (Moran, 58). He had nothing and really did not want anything. But at the same time he experienced and matured living dangerously. This made me value Huck’s adventure and take it as my own. Huck proves his maturity when he comments on how the king and duke dupe the villagers into believing that they are the dead man’s brothers, and Huck says, “I never see anything so disgusting.”(Twain 163) Even though the king and duke commit an awful act on the villagers he still feels sorry for them when they get tarred. Huck comments, “Human beings can be awful cruel to one another.”(Twain 225) In William Faulkner’s Barn Burning it told of a man named Abner Snopes who burned barns when upset or mad. This was his way of getting back at them. “Barn Burning” has two very evident struggles (Browner, 105). Abner oppresses his family just as the upper class has oppressed him. “Barn Burning” to me is based on misdirected anger. Which is basically happening in these days. For example, a teenager and his parents have it out, he leaves, and now his anger is directed toward anything in his pathway. “Barn Burning” has a value in that it shows in life that people actually misdirect their anger. Such as in the school shootings and bomb threats that have occurred in the past couple of years (Koehler, 33). Just like Abner Snopes felt like an outsider to the upper class, so did the students who committed these violent acts. In “The Swimmer”, it made me value life and what it brings. Because if your not careful or you do not watch out it will past you up without notice (Browner, 109). As with “Everyday Use″, one of the daughters did not value who she was or whom she was because she was going out looking for her history. Which she already had at her fingertips.

Conclusion:

In conclusion I would like to note that reading all of the literature which colleges and universities assign to their students involves very high costs to the society in terms of paper consumption and time wasting (that involves going to the library, or to the book shop, etc). The internet and the ability to download the books from online to one portable device would reduce the costs, save the trees, and will make people more efficient. I realize that there are a lot of things that we as people in this society take for granted. Literature has made me value a lot of experiences and situations so far and I enjoy holding the paper book in the evening preparing for the next day, yet I do not protest against the use of the digital technology to create digital books that would contribute not only to the efficiency but also to the reduced costs to the whole society.

Camera Lenses

Monday, July 30th, 2007

Photography is undoubtedly one of the most important inventions in history–it has truly altered how people conceive the world. Now, we can see everything clearly, including that which is actually many miles or years away from us. Photography lets us encapsulate moments in time and conserve them for years to come.

When selecting a lens, make sure it fits your camera, as not all lenses fit all cameras. Even if you change to a newer model of the same manufacturer’s camera, the old lens may not work. If the lens has an electric zoom, iris, and maybe even focus, these functions could be powered and controlled by a multi-wire cable that connects between the lens and the camera. Therefore, getting the right signals and voltages from the camera to the lens makes it a tricky matter.

Lenses are described by focal length, usually telling you the lens’ widest image angle and the zoom ratio. The focal length measured in millimeters is number derived from a mathematical formula.

If you need to shoot in humid climates, keep your camera and lens sealed securely. Let the two warm up to outside temperatures before you use them. This prevents condensation from forming on your gear. If dampness gets inside your lens, fungus starts to grow and it is nearly impossible to remove.

Choosing a lens for your camera can be one of the toughest decisions to make, especially if your camera is a specialized one. If you want to capture a lot of activity you will not be able to identify minute details at a far away distance. Conversely, while using a lens or lens setting to capture close-up pictures from a distance you must sacrifice a lot of horizontal coverage. Therefore, it is essential to choose the perfect lens for your purposes and camera.

Karaoke Bars

Monday, July 30th, 2007

Karaoke bars probably established their roots in the early twentieth century in Japan during the Taisho rule. “Utagoe Kissa,” or “coffee shop,” became popular with customers who tried out their singing talents backed up by music from a live band. Soon, the trend caught up with the rest of the world, and karaoke bars are now the ideal place for fun and unwinding after a hard day’s work.

Picture a typical karaoke bar today. Customers, having a few drinks, and a good time — probably not gifted with the ability to sing, but that doesn’t matter. They take the stage, and with microphone in hand try belting out a popular song- with friends razzing in the background. The lyrics are displayed on the screen, and the music is provided by the karaoke machine.

Simply put, an American karaoke bar is a restaurant or a bar having a karaoke machine that allows customers to exercise their singing abilities publicly. Though it is not uncommon to have karaoke shows every night, the schedule is generally on a weekly basis. There is the ‘rotation’ policy where a singer has to wait his turn to take the stage. The time between different performers is an hour or so.

Karaoke boxes (KTV) are highly popular in some places, especially in Taiwan. In a room of medium size, complete with karaoke paraphernalia, friends can get together and enjoy karaoke. Karaoke boxes are a more private means of entertainment. Around fifteen to twenty of these boxes are scattered around the room accompanying the main karaoke bar. It is commonly believed that the karaoke box concept started in South Korea where it was known as “noraebang” (“norae” and “bang” meaning song and room respectively).

Karaoke boxes became popular in North American during the 90’s. However, karaoke bars are still the major source of karaoke entertainment. In China, there are “mahjong-karaoke rooms”, where teenagers can enjoy karaoke and the aged indulge in mahjong, a game played by four players that originated in China.

Karaoke Lyrics

Monday, July 30th, 2007

Song brought a whole new era in human existence, making the expression of many feelings and sentiments possible, enabling communication, and creating a condition in which people could actually sing to the music they heard around them. No one can deny that the charm of a karaoke session is apparent only when all people present know and understand the lyrics. Karaoke lyrics refer to the words the songs, whose tunes are being meted out by the karaoke box.

Generally, karaoke discs come in a combined audio-visual format, in which the music is played on the speaker and the words displayed on a television set. If however, the music system has not been connected to a display unit, the lyrics will not be seen and singers will have to depend on memory for the wording of a song. Moreover, if s singer forgets a few lines or messes up their order, the entire karaoke session can go for a toss. This is mainly why karaoke bars always use large display screen for karaoke lyrics.

When people are unsure of the lyrics, they are generally reluctant to sing. Having a display of karaoke lyrics is generally enough to get them off their chairs and on to the stage. When the karaoke lyrics are not embedded in the CD, they can be downloaded from the Internet. Using the media drives of a personal computer, people can even have a ready-to-use karaoke at home to play and display all karaoke songs. At times, the karaoke lyrics are color coded to depict rose and fall of voice and music. At times, these lyrics are displayed along with the original video of the song, so if people please they can look at the actual singer instead of the one pretending to be it.

Most regular players are not equipped to read lyrics from karaoke CDs since they are not designed to read the coded words. Specialized lyric editors that can read file of all formats and synchronize the karaoke lyrics are preferable to regular music systems.

The Kenny Chesney News Letter Issue #5

Monday, July 30th, 2007

In This Issue (1 Oct 06)

1. Kenny thanks many for his success.

2. Kenny Chesney Live debut and a bonus DVD?

3. “You Save Me” position on Billboard.

4. Who had 100% capacity crowds on this summers tours?

5. Just how popular was Kenny Chesney Live - “Live those Song Again”?

6. You’ll never guess what Kenny is addicted to.

7. “Do you Google”?

8. Kirbys 10 Computer Tips Report.

9. A Computer Tip Before We Go.

10. Your suggestions.
============================

1.
Kenny recently thanked a group of very important people at a gathering at the Musicians Hall Of Fame. “It’s not like one day - WHAM! - you’re a star,” he said, “A lot of people along the way have worked very hard so that I can stand onstage and rock those fans so people can turn on the radio and hear the songs that I sing so when you buy one of my albums, you know those songs are gonna be the best that’re available and are played as well as they could possibly be played.”

Among those in attendance were George Jones, Alabama’s Randy Owens, Mac MacAnally, Rodney Crowell and Mac Davis. There were others as well from radio, retail, the media, songwriters, promoters, players, tech people, bus drivers and family members and Kenny wanted to thank them all for his success.

Kenny went on to say,”So many people have been so generous to me, and to my fans and rather than having another party about something I′ve accomplished, I wanted to do something for all the people who have contributed to making those accomplishments possible.

For Kenny’s last concert of The Road And The Radio Tour he did something a bit unique. Here is what they did as Kenny explains.

“Anyone who was at our final show knows about Mostly Crew, the band that came on before us - that was made up of all these talented guys on my road team. I have some really great players in my organization and I wanted to give them a chance to feel what me and the guys get to experience every night we’re out there, and the Crew tore it up. To me, any time I can let someone else experience these things that make a career or an achievement special, when I can share that, well, it just makes the experience that much better. Without everyone at this party, I′d not be here and I know that, so to be able to turn around and give it back to them, well, that’s maybe the best part of this kind of success.”

2.
Well it should come as no surprise that Kenny’s live CD entitled “Kenny Chesney - Live Those Songs Again” debuted into the Top 10 this week. Just a side note on this CD. An on-line friend of mine, Pam, told me the following:

By the way, did you get a DVD with your LIVE CD? I purchased mine from Target Store and it
is a “behind the scenes” showing him in the Sound studio, his crew, and just hanging out with his band. Great to watch.

Thanks Pam for that info. I bet my readers thank you also.

3.
“You Save Me” has made it up to No. 10 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs Chart but has only moved up from No. 12 in the past 2 weeks. Could it may have reached its peak? We’ll see!

4.
Who had 100% capacity for this summers concert touring season? Here are the stats.

First - Madonna at 100%

Second - Kenny Chesney at 98.9%

Third - Nickleback at 98%

5.
Kenny Chesney’s “LIVE: Live Those Songs Again” has entered the Billboard 200 chart at No. 4 and sat atop the Top Country Albums chart with 137,000 in sales for its first week of release. The Road and the Radio debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 2005 with 469,000 in sales.

Here is what Kenny recently had to say about his new release.

“I know a lot of people don’t put out live CDs, but for me and the guys, when we listen back to the shows, we’re always blown away by the way the audience inspires us and lifts us up.” Kenny adds that even though the songs from the album are well-known, he did not want to make a “Greatest Hits Two” CD. “That’s why we put ‘Beer in Mexico’ and ‘Keg in the Closet’ on here,” Kenny tells X radio, “because those songs are great for us live, not necessarily the biggest hits we had on the radio.”

6.
Apparently, since Kenny was a small boy he’s been doing this. And every day when he was married to Rene Zellweger he did this. And he still does this every day while touring on the road. Give up?

He says, “I’ve done my own laundry ever since I was a little kid. I mean my mom worked and she was a single, working mother and so, if I was gonna have clean underwear, I had to do it. “Now I’m so particular that I won’t let anybody else touch it. “On the road, (I do it) every day. You’ve got hours to waste… Usually at the venue, arena or wherever we’re playing they have a facility. “I’m one of those people who are addicted to laundry. I’m always doing it… My clothes smell really good.”

7.
“Do you Google″? If so, here is a tip for you.
For those using IE as your browser of choice, you may wish to install the Google Toolbar. Why? Well how often have you found yourself on a webpage and you wanted to find out more information about someone, or something right now without leaving that page?

Well with the Google Toolbar installed on your IE Browser, you can! Download and install this add on like any other piece of software except read what it calls the “advanced features” part carefully. You do give up some surfing secrets to Google when you enable this, but no real security info like passwords, bank info, your name, address, telephone number or anything like that. Just surf habits so Google can offer you additional info about the page you′re viewing.

Get the google toolbar here:

8.
Well I have 10 great computer tips available for you at the following url. Simple surf there to download this .pdf file and follow these 10 computer tips to help speed up your system. As always, ensure you backup any important files, although these tips will not affect your actual data.

You can download this report here:

10.
A Computer Tip Before We Go - This tip was not included in the 10 Computer Tips Report above, but it’s one you can use to squeeze some additional performance from your system.

Right click on the “My Compyter” icon on your desktop and click Properties. Then click on the Advanced Tab and under the Performance section of the panel, click the Settings button. Click the Visual Effects Tab and then click the custom radio button. Now uncheck everything in the panel except the last 3 checkboxes.

Windows XP comes loaded with extra processor sucking processes that, for the most part, you can live without. If you don′t like the result, you can always change things back.

Chinese Zodiac System: Some Interesting Details

Sunday, July 29th, 2007

Before switching to the regular solar calendar of the western origin, the Chinese used to follow their own calendar which was based on lunar cycles. So, Chinese astrology is based on the conventional lunar calendar, which has twelve cycles of the moon.

There are twelve different animals in Chinese zodiac. Each zodiac period consists of full moon cycle, from new moon to full moon. Therefore, twelve full lunar cycles are there in a Chinese Zodiac year. However, one animal stands for a whole year. So, a Chinese cycle goes round for twelve years before starting all over again. Unlike in western system, where your zodiac comes around every year, in the Chinese system you can celebrate your zodiac birthday only once in twelve years.

There are several legends associated with the creation of the Chinese calendar. One of them has it that the gods wanted to test which of the animals could reach their position the fastest. So, they asked all of them to compete by swimming through a river. The order of their reaching is reflected in the Chinese zodiac. According to another legend, before leaving earth, Lord Buddha asked the animals to visit him. And when they went to meet him, he named the moon cycles according to the order of appearance of the animals. This makes the Chinese zodiac a circle with twelve equal parts much like a pie sliced into twelve parts.

There are specific characteristics associated with every zodiac animal in the Chinese system. The animals are ox, rabbit, tiger, rat, snake, sheep, horse, monkey, rooster, boar, dog and dragon.

So, if you fall under ‘rat’, you are supposed to be aggressive, charming, perfectionist and a little secretive. You are also party loving and somewhat stubborn. Those who belong to the ‘rat’ zodiac may also be somewhat mean at times. Therefore, each zodiac represents a complete personality with both positive and negative traits.

Chinese zodiac system is much different from the solar-based western zodiac system we are all so familiar with. However, many a time the traits you are supposed to have under western system are much the same as those under the Chinese system. That’s quite amazing. This, however, may not happen in all cases.
