Movie Review - Black Snake Moan

Saturday, March 31st, 2007

Black Snake Moan is an improbable, sometimes potentially disastrous film about sex, race, religion and redemption. While most film makers would take this unbelievable story and create nothing short of a train wreck, Director/Writer Craig Brewer (Hustle and Flow) does nearly the impossible, by creating his second great film.

Black Snake Moan tells the story of Lazarus (Samuel L. Jackson), an older, grey haired black man in the Deep South. Down on his luck lately after losing his wife to his brother, even his guitar and blues singing no longer provides him with comfort. He has stopped attending church as he just needs time to himself. He works in a field and makes his money by selling vegetables at the local market. Upon returning to his home one day, he sees Rae (Christina Ricci) lying on the side of the dirt road. Rae is a southern white girl, who’s Boyfriend Ronnie just left her to go off to the army. As he is leaving, she drops to the ground and begins to shake. Not good at being alone, she gets “The Itch”. The itch while in this case looks very much like a heroine addiction is actually nymphomania. Half naked and beaten after a night of sex/drugs/drinking (after all her boyfriend left like 24 hours ago, so what’s a girl to do?) Lazarus finds her still alive so he takes her into his home and tends to her wounds for 3 days. During this time, she comes in and out of consciousness and goes into fits that he just can’t understand. Learning what he can about this girl from some locals, he learns that she has “the Itch” or “the Sickness” and he takes it upon himself to save her. He chains her to a radiator so that she can’t get away so that he can give her what she needs, a detoxification from sex. He plans to cure her of her sluttery. Little does he realize that he also is in need of a healing, and Rae might just be the one person to help him?

Black Snake Moan is a beautiful film that brings two individuals from opposite sides of life’s spectrum together to find happiness. While the film flirts with sexual tension between the two characters, the god-fearing Lazarus sticks to his guns and treats this white girl with what she has needed her whole life and that’s simply respect (aside from chaining her to a radiator of course). The relationship between Jackson and Ricci is more like that of a loving father and an out of control rebellious daughter. The two find common grounds, and begin to work through their problems together. Jackson has been quoted as saying he feels like this might be his best performance, and I would say he is correct. The same would go for Ricci. While I don’t expect either of them to get much attention come Oscar time, both should be praised for their courageous and inspiring performances.

Set against the backdrop of a small community in the Deep South, Black Snake Moan is a great film, with a great cast (aside from Justin Timberlake’s who’s performance did anything but impress). Many may feel uncomfortable with such in your face sexual tension, but by the end, very few will be able to doubt the films very real story of redemption and salvation.

NBA Personnel and Strategic Changes

Saturday, March 31st, 2007

As we approach the last few weeks of the NBA season, a good handicapper must be in tune with all the changes that are taking place. I know it’s the end of a long regular season, but that doesn’t mean teams play the same way NOW that they’ve played all season.

Some teams are packing it in, others are motivated tottering on the playoff bubble, while still other teams are making changes, either to play more kids for experience or to change strategy because they have to. Take the Memphis Grizzlies. You know those Grizzlies, the team that likes to run-and-gun while playing no defense, ever since interim coach Tony Barone took over.

They have been a machine at going over the total under Barone. However, look what happened this week: 87 and 88 points on offense, both games sailing under the total. What has happened? A total change in strategy, that’s what! The Grizzlies are short-handed, with Damon Stoudamire and Mike Miller out, both of whom have knee tendinitis. Point guard Chucky Atkins has also been out with a groin injury. That means Junior Harrington is the only point guard.

So this week guards Tarence Kinsey and Junior Harrington made their first two starts of the season and lead the Grizzlies to an improbable 88-86 win over the Lakers as a 13-point dog in front of a stunned and disappointed crowd at the Staples Center. It snapped the Lakers five-game winning streak.

Both players came up huge, with Kinsey posting a career high with 24 points and seven rebounds in 44 minutes. Harrington played all 48 minutes, adding season-highs of 13 points and eight rebounds, while tying his season high of eight assists. Throw in rookie Rudy Gay and you won’t recognize these Grizzlies. Gay finished the game with 20 points, a career-high 12 boards, and four blocked shots.

The Grizzlies made do with their makeshift lineup and slowed the pace down. After watching Kobe Bryant go off for 60 against them last week, the Grizzlies employed a zone defense this time. After scoring better than 40 points in five straight games, Bryant missed 15 of his next 16 attempts. He finished the game with 23 points on 7 of 26 shooting. The Lakers were held to 34.4 percent shooting.

“We don’t like to play zone,” said Barone, “but that was the smart thing for us to do and it worked.” “They played box-and-one,” Bryant added. “I haven’t seen that since high school.” The game went 75 points under the total. How’s THAT for an easy cover?!

The Portland Trail Blazers have also made some major changes, covering 5 of the last 7 games. Rookie LaMarcus Aldridge is starting and playing well, along with rookie Brandon Roy. They failed to cover at Chicago partly because the Blazers played without two of their top players, Roy and Ime Udoka. Roy, the Blazers′ best all-around player, left hours before tipoff to attend the impending birth of his son. Udoka, the team’s top defender, suffered his second concussion in three months, and did not return. The injury to Udoka allowed Bulls forward Luol Deng to get free for a career-high 38 points on 18 of 25 shooting.

The Pistons have been hit with the flu bug this week with Richard Hamilton, Dale Davis and Chris Webber missing time. But the Pistons have received steady play from their reserves, namely Flip Murray, Jason Maxiell, Carlos Delfino, Antonio McDyess and Lindsey Hunter. Saunders said he has seen the reserves making critical plays at critical times in recent games.

“You look at our last four, five games, our second and fourth quarters, and those guys are playing, that’s when we’ve made our runs,” Saunders said. Detroit has covered 9 of 11 games. So even the good teams are making changes that can affect their play – both good and bad! A smart handicapper keeps tabs on all these changes and anticipates how to apply that knowledge into the next game’s spread.

Gilmore Girls (Season 4) DVD Review

Saturday, March 31st, 2007

Nominated for 1 Emmy and 1 Golden Globe in its first five seasons, Gilmore Girls has experienced much greater success among TV viewers than among industry critics. In fact, the show is the first script supported by the Family Friendly Forum′s script development fund to go on and become a regular television series. Part of an initiative between The WB Network - maker of such hits as Dawson’s Creek (1998), Felicity (1998), Angel (1999), and Smallville (2001) - and fellow industry executives, this push for more family-oriented programming resulted in a series showcasing a unique mother-daughter bond and the various people they encounter on their life voyage of discovery. Set in the fictional town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut, Gilmore Girls utilizes many of the same sets as the hit series The Dukes Of Hazzard (1979) - another successful Warner Brothers production from years past…

Gilmore Girls is set in a small idyllic community in Connecticut filled with a wide range of diverse characters and eccentric personalities. Against this backdrop, Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham) attempts to raise her daughter and best friend, Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel), to carve out a better life for herself. Having made a number of youthful mistakes, Lorelai made the decision to raise her daughter by herself at a young age (the same age as Rory when the series begins), and she’s bound and determined to make sure that Rory makes better decisions for herself. As Rory prepares to go off to college, she displays many of the same likes and dislikes as her mother - especially when it comes to the opposite sex, and that’s what worries Lorelai the most… A borderline soap opera, Gilmore Girls is more of a serial drama that focuses on the love, friendship, and shared growth of a mother and daughter as they live out their dreams in modern day America…

The Gilmore Girls (Season 4) DVD features a number of touching episodes including the season premiere “Ballrooms and Biscotti” in which Lorelai and Rory return from their European vacation to experience a whirlwind of activity. Taylor gets upset when Rory declines the offer to be the Stars Hollow Ice Cream Queen, while Rory herself is in a panic after realizing she wrote the wrong date for freshman orientation on her calendar. Now, she must fit a week’s worth of preparation into two days, and Emily isn’t very happy about it… Other notable episodes from Season 4 include “The Nanny and the Professor” in which Rory becomes concerned when Paris′s new boyfriend turns out to be one of her college professors, and “Luke Can See Her Face” in which a self-help tape and a long talk with Jess help Luke to envision a path to the relationship he’s been seeking all along…

Education and Numerology- Helping Your Child in School

Friday, March 30th, 2007

Will your children do well in school? Are their certain subjects or areas that they will excel in, or have difficulty in? Numerology can help you find the answer to these questions. We just need to calculate their Birth Day number.

Birth Day Calculation

Your Birthday number is the date of the month you were born on, reduced to a single digit by fadic addition. For example, actor Orlando Bloom was born on January 13th, 1977, so his Birthday number is (4) as shown below.

Birthday = (Day part of your birth date) = (13) = (1 3) = (4)

The Birth Day number values, and their affects on education are listed below.

Birth Day (1) - Individualist

These children are such individualist, that you should encourage them to be part of a team at an early age. Participation in team sports or groups are a good way to foster this skill. They will usually show some skill at writing or acting at an early age; which should be encouraged. Teachers need to use a firm hand to keep these children under control.

Birth Day (2) - Sensitive

These children will tend to be shy and avoid asking questions in class. You will need to ask their teachers to watch for this trait, and encourage your child to ask for help when they don’t understand something. Help them to not worry too much about school, and praise their work. These children will always try hard in class, and should be rewarded for their efforts.

Birth Day (3) - Communicators

These children are full of energy and fun. They communicate well and should be given an education where free expression is encouraged. These children will be excellent readers and natural debaters from an early age. They also tend to excel at Math and Music, so encourage their efforts in these areas. They may have problems with hyper activity, and need an outlet for their nervous energy.

Birth Day (4) - Achievers

These children may have trouble when first introduced to school life, but once they acclimate, look out. They can’t get enough of school work. They quickly master new ideas, and tend to love Math, science, and computer studies. These children make excellent students, striving to become their teachers favorite.

Birth Day (5) - Thinkers

These children may have trouble focusing in school they tend to become bored easily. They tend to be impatient and go off on tangents that interest their inquiring minds. These children tend to develop strong interest in science, history, or geography. They tend to specialize in things that interest them, and will have school records that are up and down. In the things that spark their interest they truly excel.

Birth Day (6) - Partners

These children tend to be favorites with their classmates. They are kind to others and tend to excel as part of a team or group. Competition is a key motivator for these children, and you should use this to advantage. You need to check and be sure that these children are challenged by their class work, make sure that they aren’t bored in school.

Birth Day (7) - Dreamers

These children have powerful imaginations, and tend to be very good at creative writing. They tend to be quite in class, and need to be encouraged to participate in team activities such as sports. Help them to develop friendships and interact with others. These children tend to benefit from tutoring and one on one interaction with teachers. They tend to learn foreign languages easily, and should be encouraged to take advantage of this gift.

Birth Day (8) - Leaders

These children are full of confidence and tend to become class leaders. They will fight for their rights from an early age. School work comes easily for them compared to others; their work is polished and well prepared. They don’t take coming in second well in any field; so you may need to help them understand that school is not a battlefield.

Birth Day (9) - Extraverts

These children tend to do best in school environments which are loosely structured. They like free reign, and resent too much discipline in school. They are born researchers, and love to work on school projects where they can work with little structure or supervision. They have problems in environments where misbehavior and anger against authority are present. Keep them in schools where discipline is maintained, and they will do well.

How to Make Money Selling Digital Photographs

Friday, March 30th, 2007

• Create an attractive portfolio to display your photography skills in the best way possible. In creating an image portfolio, you can choose two different methods. You can organize your photos into a gallery or an image library. If you choose the gallery method make sure you organize your photos around a theme, organize them chronologically or thematically and make sure that there is a thread tying all of the pictures together. A good selection of images for a gallery is 10-20. If you have several themes, create different portfolios and present them separately. An image library is more like a “Best Of…” collection. The type of images you use for an image library should be both generic and perfect. If any images in your library have flaws, throw them out. By using generic images, you increase your chance that someone will use it as it can be adapted easily to many different situations. For an image library you should include between 7-15 great pictures. The latest development in digital photography is High Dynamic Range Imaging. HDRCapture® is a wonderful tool for editing and creating HDR images. Adding HDR images to your portfolio will really make it stand out from the rest.

• Take plenty of photos. Increase your chances of taking great photos and improve your skills through practice by using your camera more often.

• Include a contact sheet. Always print out a hard copy of your digital photo collection with thumbnail pictures.

• Consider a photo business card. A photograph on a business card will make it stand out from the others. Some photographers even use wallet size photos as their business cards or even make mini thumbnail portfolios on the business card itself.

• Consider stock agencies. Stock agencies sell photos online to web designers, graphic artists and others. This may be a good source of extra cash and recognition for an up and coming photographer.

• Business opportunities can happen almost everywhere. Always have your cards on you.

• Don’t overwhelm potential clients. One of the most common mistakes new photographers make is overwhelming potential clients with hundreds of photographs. Show only your best work organized into attractive portfolios.

• Don’t assume a computer or media format. Always distribute digital photos in universal formats others can use.

• Make sure you read your model contracts. Not abiding by photography model contracts can prove costly and damaging in the long run.

• Set up a workshop or class to showcase your digital photography talents and get paid.

Here are some questions to objectively ask yourself before embarking on the exciting journey of making money for your digital photos:

Do I have the time to invest (at least 4 hours per week)?
Editing photos, giving them descriptions and uploading take considerable time. This is in addition to the time taken to actually take the photographs.

Can I capture images other then just my immediate surroundings?
In order to sell images, you have to provide something your client cannot easily get themselves.

Will friends and family be willing to sign model release forms?
Often times you can photograph a party or special event for friends or family members, in exchange for releases and ownership of your shots.

Is my camera high quality?
Generally, you should have at least a 5mp camera.

Do I know how to properly edit a photograph?
If you don’t know how to edit photos, you should familiarize yourself with either Photoshop or the open-source photo-editing program, GIMP.

Can I associate good keywords with my photos?
The key to creating good keywords for your image is by associating it with as many subjects as possible. Ideally an image should have 50 keywords you can associate with it.

Will I be able to invest more money into camera equipment?
You may not make the money back right away or ever, but you should be willing to make a small investment in equipment. It will pay off in the long run and help you become more successful.

Can I handle rejection well?
More than likely over 50% of your images will be rejected. Don’t let it get you down. Just keep building your portfolio.

Am I willing to invest time to learn continually?
Photography and technology are constantly changing. So, you will have to be willing to commit some future time to ongoing learning. Increasingly books and DVDs are being used to teach techniques.
By following these simple techniques, you will soon be well on your way to turning your favorite hobby into a money maker and possibly even a new career.

Online Poker Site Tips

Friday, March 30th, 2007

If you are going to play poker online there are a few online poker site tips that you should be aware of before you play. Playing poker online can be very fun and exciting and can also offer you a chance to win a bit of money. Some online poker site tips include knowing what to look for in a good site, being aware of what you want in a site, and knowing your skill level.

It is important that you follow online poker site tips when you are going to play poker online, and the first is that you know what to look for in a good poker site. You need to be sure to look for a successful site that has many satisfied players. You should also look for a site that offers fees that are reasonable or no fees at all. You should remember that usually if you pay no fee you will probably not be able to win any money. Also be sure to look over the rules when you join a site to be sure you can abide by them.

Another of the online poker site tips is to be sure you know what you want out of an online poker site. If you enjoy playing many styles of poker then you may want a site that offers a variety of games for you to play. If you only have one certain kind of poker you enjoy playing or know how to play then look for a site that specializes in that kind of poker. It is important to find a site that makes you happy and caters to the things you enjoy.

Another tip is to remember what your skill level is when you are looking for a place to play poker online. If you are a beginner you do not want to start out in a site that is made up of people who are very experienced in poker. Often beginners may find it helpful to start playing for free so they can build their skills. On the other hand, if you are a great poker player you want to find a site that will challenge your poker skills. Remembering these online poker site tips can improve your online poker experience.

How To Select A Design For Your First Tattoo

Friday, March 30th, 2007

As an avid fan and collector of tattoos, I am often asked for advice from friends and strangers alike how I come up with the designs for the tattoos I get. More importantly, I’m asked how they can select a tattoo for themselves. Many times these questions come from people who haven′t yet got their first tattoo.

Tattoos mean so many different things to different people. Some people get a tattoo to mark a certain period or milestone in their life or career. For example, the band The Dixie Chicks each get a baby-chick foot print on their feet to mark significant achievements.

Other people simply head down to the local tattoo shop with no idea what they are going to get, select a design from a book or off the shop wall and walk out an hour later with their new tattoo.

The advice I give to everybody who is ready to get their first tattoo is to consider the fact that you may end up wanting more tattoos in the future. If this happens, how well will the tattoo you plan to get today incorporate with another tattoo in roughly the same location? Will the tattoo you get be able to be added on to in order to create a larger themed tattoo down the line if you chose to do it at a later date?

Many first timers are also intimidated by the fear of the pain involved. Because of these they select a design that is much smaller in size in order to minimize the time it takes to complete the tattoo. This is a mistake that I’ve seen hundreds of times. Be careful not to choose a design the size of a quarter and then place it on a spot where you may one day like to receive a much larger tattoo. This will help you avoid the need to worry about working around or covering up previous work when you decide to get a much larger piece.

Finally, the best advice I can tell you is to look through as many tattoo designs as you can get your hands on in order to come with a tattoo that you are going to be happy with for a long time! Remember, tattoos are permanent.

Worship Of Saturn - Shani Puja (Anushthan)

Thursday, March 29th, 2007

Nowadays books on astrology give undue significance to Saturn, Rahu and Ketu because people are suffering because of Saturn’s 7 ½ years Sade-Sati and 2 ½ years Dhaiya whereas we have given in our astrological criticism article on Sade-Sati on our website www.astrocent.com titled “Criticism: Shani Sade Sati” that Sade Sati holds sway over 3 signs of the zodiac at any given point of time. We can calculate, as the population of the world is roughly 6 billion at the moment, hence, 6 billion /4 = 1.5 billion, which means that 1.5 billion people are running Sade Sati at all times and hence afflicted with its negative effects, which is impossible, and hence Sade Sati is not a reliable and authentic astrological method for prediction.

In our institute Astrological Research Centre, research has revealed that Saturn is benefic in 3 positions in a horoscope whereas Jupiter and Mercury are benefic only in 1 position in a horoscope, then how come that Saturn is especially malefic.

Astronomically, Saturn is the 7 th planet of our solar system. It consists of several rings of dust and particles accumulated around it. It is the second largest planet of our solar system.

In astrology, Saturn represents oil, travel, death, weapon, shudra, hair, painful diseases and servants and maids. In medical astrology, Saturn rules deficiency and excesses of iron.

The Saturn rules the zodiac sign of Capricorn and Aquarius. The sign of its exaltation ( Uchchasth) is Libra and the sign of its debilitation ( Neechasth) is Aries.

As based on the horoscope the malefic or benefic effect of the Saturn is determined astrologically and not merely on the basis of exaltation or debilitation because under certain conditions even a debilitated Saturn can give beneficial effects whereas based on its position and degrees in the horoscope even an exalted Saturn can sometimes give malefic effects.

As we have explained in our astrology research article “ What is Mantra” Mantras can be classified under two broad categories: -

1. Tantrik Mantras ( Beeja Mantras)
2. Vedic Mantras

Therefore, chanting of Tantrik or Vedic Mantra of the concerned planet 1,25,000 times or its half, 62,500 times reduces the malefic effects of that planet. In Panchangas, this number of times for the chanting of mantra for the Saturn is given as 7,000 when by chanting only 7,000 times the Mantra of the Saturn nothing substantial can be achieved and it is 1,25,000 times chanting alone which can give proper results.

The Tantrik Mantra of the Saturn: -

“Om Praang Preeng Praoung Sah Shanaishcharaaya Namah”

The Vedic Mantra of the Saturn: -

Om Shanno Devirabhishtaya Aapo Bhavantu Peetaye Shanyorbhisravantumah Shanaishcharaaya Namah

The Saturn can be propitiated from either kind of mantras but among these Tantrik Mantras ( Beeja Mantras) are more popular. By undertaking this “Anushthana” ( Puja & Homa{ Ritual of Chanting of Mantras}) one can remove the malefic effects of the Saturn especially when performed in the Major Period ( Mahadasha) or Sub-Periods ( Antar Dashas) of the Saturn.

Nostalgia: Black and White Halloween Horror Hits

Thursday, March 29th, 2007

Nostalgia

When it came to my father’s movie theatres in the small western Illinois towns of
Carthage and Warsaw, I was one puerile youth who bubbled over with promotional ideas on how to locally ballyhoo the low-budget horror films he played.

The Warsaw Theatre, a Quonset hut building on Main Street in a town of two thousand people overlooking the Mississippi River, was, in the late 1950s and early 1960s, open only on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights and sometimes played a different picture each night. The Woodbine Theatre in Carthage, twenty miles east of the river and with a larger population, tried to remain open every night, but rarely played a single film as long as a week. In the Warsaw Theatre, my father often ran double-feature material – older films and re-issues, eighty minute color westerns billed with black-and-white “lower half” films. Occasionally, when he listened to my pleas, he would run horror films, and these were the films I would go out of my way to promote. This was a very small town, so our limited resources left me with a few opportunities to be imaginative, creating lobby displays, storefront cardboard displays, and telephone posters – all made of cardboard and ink.

Some horror films of the era, however, came equipped with their own promotional gimmicks – the most well-known being those created by schlock director and producer William Castle. His first gimmick was in 1958, a promo involving a Lloyd’s of London insurance policy covering the movie patron in the unlikely event that he or she died of fright while watching MACABRE.

Garard - 2

MACABRE is a small-budgeted but tightly paced black-and-white thriller with a few shots inserted for obvious shock value: a bloody faced corpse which falls over inside a mausoleum, a small dummy corpse with a skull face in a casket shown during a funeral at night, the sudden hand on the shoulder of a doctor who is searching through a cemetery for his daughter who has supposedly been buried alive. The final resolution is perhaps the biggest shock of all, perhaps because it is quite plausible. Greedy human beings, such as in the next Castle film HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL, are the real horrors, not supernatural beings. Nonetheless, the shocks are still effective – at least for audiences not requiring gore (as in the remake of the film with the same title). To this date, only two Castle films have been remade with updated gore: HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL and THIRTEEN GHOSTS. Teen audiences today, at least in America, would probably find the original versions of the films to be quite tame.*

When Allied Artist’s MACABRE played at the Warsaw Theatre, I ordered extra 8 x 10 still photos from the film from National Screen Service and decorated the window of a local drug store with a cardboard cut-out cemetery. I drew my own tombstones, but the druggist balked when I wrote the names of local people on the graves. I meant it as a joke, but black humor (sick humor) was not in.

* In the same year, Hammer Films released its version of the Dracula story with the title, in the US, HORROR OF DRACULA. In 1958, it was startling to some audiences and quite tame to others. When I showed the film in the 1990s to a college class in Atlanta, they found it to be slow-paced in spots and not very frightening or shocking. However, when I showed the film to a British literature class in China in 2004, several college girls asked to be dismissed from the classroom. They were thoroughly frightened, and I was shocked by their reaction.

Despite my cardboard artistry, however, the film attracted only a small portion of our small population. We had the usual football games as competition.

For a Halloween midnight showing one year, Dad played two hokey horror films geared for teenage audiences: I WAS A TEENAGE FRANKENSTEIN and THE RETURN OF DRACULA. For this late 1950s double-bill, I constructed a cardboard castle over one of the inside exits next to the screen and ran a wire from it to the projection booth. I draped a section of white sheet over a hangar and tied a string to the hanger. During a high point of one of the films, I stood in the exit and pulled on the string, hoping to pull the ghost across the top of the audience. The ghost came out of the projection booth window on cue, but the hanger stuck halfway down. I jerked harder on the string and it snapped, leaving my deus ex machina suspended above the audience until the end of the showing when the houselights revealed my attempted stunt.

More successful was my huge cobweb made out of regular white yarn that I draped over the doorways and the one-sheet and 14 x 36 frames in the lobby.

Both I WAS A TEENAGE FRANKENSTIEN and THE RETURN OF DRACULA feature their own internal gimmicks – the use of color in otherwise black-and-white films. One may recall how a short color segment was used in the 1940s films THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY and THE PORTRAIT OF JENNY; in each case, only the portrait of the title character was shown in color in sharp contrast with the rest of the film. Both inserted shots are quite effective. Less can be said the use of color in the aforementioned Halloween hits. In the Frankenstein film, color is used only at the end when the monster destroys himself through shock therapy. The scene is not shocking, only surprising (as in Why?).

The Dracula film, a much more frightening film (because of skillful directing and editing, not internal gimmicks), uses color for the close shot where vampire hunters plunge a stake into the heart of a female vampire. Color gushing out of a heart wound in this black-and-white film is much more effective as a shocking contrast than the sudden jolt of color used in Castle’s THE TINGLER, which shows a bathtub filled with blood and a human arm reaching out to a woman who is deathly afraid of the sight of blood.

In 1960, Nikolai Gogal’s short story “The Vij” was transformed into an Italian horror film by shock-for-shock’s sake director Mario Bava. The film was released in the US as BLACK SUNDAY (and THE MASK OF SATAN in Europe). BLACK SUNDAY was later used as the title of a John Frankenheimer film which dealt with pre-9-11 terrorists trying to decimate a football stadium full of fans. The first BLACK SUNDAY was released by American-International Pictures, a company famous for producing its own low-budgeted but heavily promoted quickies like I WAS A TEENAGE FRANKENSTEIN.

The 1960s BLACK SUNDAY, however, is unlike other formula flicks for teens at the drive-in theatres. Clever if self-conscious camera work utilizes an abundance of zoom lens shots and focuses our attention on the gamut of gothic trappings brought to life in low key black-and-white; some of the scenes feature stark imagery as crisp as anything shown in Antonioni’s L’AVVENTURA, while others effectively use soft focus to create a nightmarish world. It is almost a textbook of gothic examples: black-robed hooded figures executing witches with a spike-studded mask before the titles are even shown, paintings changing and rotating to reveal secret passageways, trap doors opening onto pits with long spikes at the bottom, lanterns floating in mid-air, corpses found hanging in corridors, and huge bats flying around in the crypt.

Barbara Steele, identified in many Italian horror flicks (and even in Fellini’s landmark film 8 ½) and Roger Corman’s The Pit and the Pendulum, plays two roles in BLACK SUNDAY, a witch executed in the pre-title sequence and a lovely princess menaced by her look-alike witch ancestor who is accidentally brought back to life. When the witch is brought to life two hundred years after her execution, her lovely face, and the face of her vampire lover, is covered with the holes made by the spikes in the mask. A doctor visiting her tomb discovers her coffin and unwittingly breaks the glass over her mask-encased face by striking at a large bat. He cuts his hand on the broken glass, creating an unlikely chain of events: blood from his cut drips conveniently into the eye socket of the reposing witch, the cross over her coffin has been accidentally demolished, and her coffin is blown free as if dynamited.

Zoom lenses are used effectively throughout – an unusual feat in itself since the temptation is to overuse that lens, something that the Italians became famous for doing in later films. When the witch’s vampire-lover glides into a room, the father of the innocent princess holds up a cross. The camera zooms back from the cross, and as the vampire is repelled, the camera lens zooms in on the door as it closes behind him.

The greatest flaw in the film is the poorly post-dubbed dialogue, reminding small-town theatre and drive-in audiences that even the presence of Brits Barbara Steele and John Richardson portraying characters with long Russian names cannot conceal the fact that this is an Italian film. By this time, they were gradually being exposed to the long-running series of films made in color from Edgar Allen Poe stories, so the foreign cast and black-and-white footage might have been comparatively disappointing. The Poe films needed no ballyhooing, but for BLACK SUNDAY, I did take illustrations from the large press book and paste them onto large cardboard posters accompanied by my hand-lettering.

One American film produced many years before BLACK SUNDAY and promoted with the usual ballyhoo – the title and advertisements having little to do with the content – was the ultra low-budget Roger Corman film THE UNDEAD (1956). For example, the title would hardly suggest that this is actually a type of time-travel film, one that I showed in a science-fiction time-travel class.

Once again, witches are on hand. Instead of being dispatched by spike-studded masks, however, they are beheaded by a muscular (but still hooded) executioner. Readers of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “Young Goodman Brown” might be surprised to see Satan make an appearance during a Walpurgis Night orgy of corpse dancing and soul-trading. To welcome Satan to the festivities in his honor, the severed head of a tavern-owner must be delivered by buxom witch Allyson Hayes. She and her gnome-like friend Billy Barty can transform themselves into black cats or flying bats whenever they find it necessary to do so.

Despite the presence of shape-shifting witches, the film’s theme includes reincarnation and regression (a form of time travel). Pamela Duncan is regressed through her past lives to medieval England where she is falsely accused of being a witch. She is faced with the choice of putting her head down on the execution block with other accused witches and thus allowed herself to be reincarnated in future lives, or of escaping with her handsome knight lover and alter the future. This execution scene, with only the thump of the basket to suggest the beheadings, is well-done, particularly for a low-budget film.

Some local stations and some cable networks might occasionally run these films that were once part of dusk-to-dawn drive in movie fare or special Halloween shows like my father used to run. If you are fortunate, you might be able to find these old black-and-white classic horror films in DVD catalogues. Then you can have your own living room dusk-to-dawn marathons for those friends of yours who appreciate films that are frightening in a subtle way and didn’t need to be grossed out with gruesome NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET and FRIDAY THE 13TH killings. You can even make cobwebs out of string and hang them about the sofa.

Charles Garard is a PhD in literature and film who taught for 16 years at a private college in Atlanta and recently taught for two years in China. He grew up around his father’s small-town theatres in western Illinois and has used memories from his experiences in two novels about small-town life. His purpose in this article is to bring back memories of older black-and-white horror films that he used to promote in his father’s theatre while a young man.
