Robert Frost is Frozen, A New Generation of Poets I’ve Chosen

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

Robert Frost

You’ve done well

In asking

Before building

What are you walling in?

What are you walling out?

And whom are you offending

When doing so?

True

Good fences

Make good neighbors

Yet what about the current horrors?

Domestic violence and international wars

Nobody loves walls

Intended to keep us out

Or giants

That want to make us doubt.

The promised land

Is for whosoever will

Even if they be uneducated and without skill

For all human beings have God-given gifts

Talents and abilities of some sort

Therefore let not politicians

Of us make sport

Neither academians who think

They know it all

For pride precedes a great fall

Humility however

Enables us to learn, grow and stand tall

As for arrogance

It incites rivalry

Divides humanity

Verbally spews profanity

Causing societal insanity

Often leading to a brawl.

Now therefore listen to poet Paul

A life coach and prophet

For a new generation

Bringing down walls

As a minister of reconciliation

Taking a relevant message

To awake a perverse and adulterous nation

Bent on evil

Ready to self-destruct

This is why

I

An ambassador of heaven

Must now erupt

And not be silent

Islam is impotent, intolerant and violent

And unless a new generation

Of voices arise

We as a nation shall be despised.

Therefore here am I send me!

I will go in your stead

With my poetry.

For a new genre and spirit is needed

Take rest my beloved Frost

Your works have succeeded

For there can be no success

Without a successor

Although some would say

I am the lesser

Nevertheless as a fellow pastoral poet

I dare to be your successor.

Singing Gigs and Session Work

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

We′ve all made the comment, “How did so and so ever make it as a singer?” As a former talent booking agent with the William Morris Agency, we were also amazed at times. At best it was a guessing game of who we would sign and wouldn’t – it was more of a speculative stock market approach than a science. Yet that is how the music industry is and remains for a number of reasons.

As a singer, trying to break into the music industry, even as a session singer with no real aspiration of signing an artist deal, it can be tough – But it is doable and with real talent and drive you can make it. One of the most appealing aspects to session singers is that it does in fact take talent if you’re in it for the long haul, making it feasible to break into the market. Think about it - If session singing does in fact take talent, that takes away a lot of individuals who think they have the talent, but really don’t and therefore leaves room for individuals who can deliver the singing goods when called upon. That fact alone is assuring for singers making a real attempt at breaking in. Suddenly most of the, “How did that singer ever make it,” is removed from the playing field leaving room for the real talent in the session singing world, but not the frontline artist record deal signing world..

So how does one go about breaking into session work and singing gigs? That’s a multi-faceted question depending on what angle of the music business you are going after. I can tell you that no matter what genre of singing session work whether jingles, commercial, pop, etc, you will have to have a game plan initiated. Let’s look at a workable game plan.

Your number one business card in the business is your demo reel of your vocal skills. You can not hand out “good” sounding demos, they have to sound great! There is too much competition out there for you to be handing out “fairly good” demos. This is obviously your most costly item if you are not currently doing session work and able to ask for a copy of the session you were singing on. At ReelMusician.com we record a lot of master quality jingle demos for individuals breaking into the jingle singing world. This is a great way to get started, because you can use this demo for virtually any type of session work. With multiple styles of music and vocal range and abilities demonstrated, this is a perfect calling card for the beginning session singer or singer wanting to take a more serious approach at their career. Think seriously about this type of singer demo – It can be added or modified to fit in and around other types of session singing work on your CD and can really make you sound pro like you have already arrived if your jingles sound like national spots.

In general, if money and time are an issue while putting together your demo, than it is better to keep it simple rather than to get the whole big production together without the production sizzle. Get the best players possible. If you can only afford a guitar or piano vocal, then get the best player in town – I guarantee you that an incredible guitar/vocal or piano/vocal far outweighs a full rhythm production if the session players aren’t tight. Some producers would almost rather hear your voice without all of the production elements.

You will want to spend time developing a slimmed down press kit with a picture, bio and session work performed. Don’t go over board, but state the obvious and put your best foot forward. Make the presentation of your CD with a professional, “I’ve already arrived and I’m successful” look to it, but being gracious and kind to everyone you meet. You have to adopt the attitude and presentation that you are solid, knowledgeable, and easy to work with without coping any attitude – Bottom line is that you are dependable and fun to work with and deliver the singing goods every time.

You will want to attend artist showcases, send your CD or email mp3’s to jingle houses, ad agencies, industrial music houses, and producers in your area. You can branch out to major music cities like Chicago, LA, New York, Atlanta, Dallas, etc especially if you have a jingle demo. A 60 second national spot could land you $20,000 or more for a 13 week run with possible multiple runs of this campaign earning you even more money.

You will want to follow up with everyone you come in contact with and treat this like a business, because it is. Have a business contact program or rolodex and state conversation, date and any follow up with contact numbers. Be organized and timely.

Creating a website, while not mandatory can certainly help your image as one that is not only professional, but above a lot of the rest. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on a website either. Make sure your picture, music, upcoming events, resume of session work, contact info reside on your website and keep it maintained.

Having multiple demos is a good idea as well. If you have a second or third demo, it helps to remind individuals who you are and keeps your name going across their desk. You might consider sending out cards of thank you or an email to say thanks and to keep you in mind for upcoming session work.

In closing, keep at it, keep a professional image with a great attitude and a fabulous sounding demo, and over time your phone should start ringing for session work and gigs.

The UQV (Ultimate Questioner’s Vanity) Theory

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

The UQV theory is a metaphysical theory that the universe is the consequence of the ultimate questioner’s vanity. This theory builds on the NSTP (Non – Spatial Thinking Process) theoretical metaphysical semi-solipsism, the position, which specifically regards the NSTP theoretical superhuman mind as a personal philosophical questioning supermind. The UQV theory further speculates the existence of the ultimate questioner, which, existing logically/conceptually beyond the superhuman mind, initiated the existence of my NSTP in order to ask an apparently unanswerable (philosophical) question about the nature of its own existence. And since the NSTP is extremely orderly and deterministic, the ultimate questioner already knows if the NSTP would or would not answer the question. Therefore, the theory states that the universe, which includes my NSTP, and possibly the superhuman mind, and even the necessary truths, is the product/consequence of the ultimate questioner’s vanity, the vanity of its own existence and intelligence. The theory is constituted of one postulate, one law, and three conjectures.

Postulate 1: The NSTP (Non – Spatial Thinking Process) theory is true.

The NSTP theory is a (philosophy of mind) semi-idealistic as well as semi-dualistic theory that the material universe, where some peculiar phenomena like quantum non-locality exist in, is exclusively a group of superhuman as well as non-superhuman thinking processes existing in the form of (non-spatial physical/material) feelings (i.e. states of consciousness). In computer terminology, it regards the (material) universe as a non-spatial computer, with hardware of (non-spatial) feelings and software of superhuman as well as non-superhuman thoughts/ideas, including those of space, which is then an illusive/virtual/merely apparent entity. The mere existence of the superhuman thoughts is responsible for the empirical (i.e. a posteriori) order in the non-superhuman ones. The theory, however, accepts the possibility of the reality of space, the space where the phenomena like quantum non-locality do not exist in. The theory is constituted of 6 axioms, 1 theorem, and 3 conjectures. The key strength and novelty in the theory lies in its axiomatic/self-evident foundation, its innovative semi-idealism and semi-dualism, its idea of superhuman states of consciousness, its computational description of idealism, and, in general, its road to idealism and dualism.

Further, in this work, the possibility of the reality of space, the space where the phenomena like quantum non-locality do not exist in, will not be considered because
i.Zeno’s paradoxes diminish the possibility of the reality of space.
ii.The design of the superhuman mind considered in conjecture 1 also diminishes the possibility of the reality of space.

Law 1: Indian/Vedic astrology is true.

i.Indian astrology is empirically convincing and thus it is true/valid.
ii.The astrological phenomena (i.e. things happening in accordance with astrological predictions) can be explained by (philosophy of mind) idealistic (i.e. non-spatial mechanistic) framework (e.g. The NSTP theory). In other words, the idealistic framework solves the problem of physical mechanism behind astrological phenomena.

Conjecture 1: The NSTP theoretical metaphysical semi-solipsism
‘I’ and ‘the superhuman mind’ are the only material entities that exist. That is, my NSTP and the superhuman NSTP/s are the only material entities that exist.

i.The non-existence of other non-superhuman minds simply makes the universal design (i.e. the superhuman mind/engine) simpler, since the engine needs no additional intelligence/information to create a variety of specific spatial illusions through multiple (non-superhuman) minds/NSTPs.
ii.Considering the best philosophical nature of my own horoscope, the superhuman mind is a personal philosophical questioning supermind, whose purpose is to make me a philosopher so that I can understand the best sort of profundity of the universe. Therefore, the superhuman mind, being highly reasonable, has no good reason to create tremendous suffering through the existence of other (non-superhuman) minds which are simply unable to answer its profound philosophical question.

Conjecture 2: The ultimate questioner
There exists the ultimate questioner, logically/conceptually beyond the superhuman mind, which has created the universe, which includes my NSTP and possibly the superhuman mind and even the necessary truths, to ask me the ultimate question about the nature of its own existence.

The superhuman mind, considered in the NSTP theory, represents a mere empirical (i.e. non-necessary) design that is responsible for the orderly existence of my NSTP. Further, something should be responsible for the (non-necessary) existence of this superhuman mind, the entity which would be logically/conceptually beyond any sort of (non-necessary) mind, or, in general, entity. Such ultimate entity has thus made me exist so that I can answer its ultimate question about the nature of its own existence. The ultimate entity is therefore the ultimate questioner. However, the ultimate question seems to be unanswerable since the ultimate questioner also does not seem to be a necessary being/entity.

Conjecture 3: The ultimate questioner’s vanity
The universe is the consequence of the ultimate questioner’s vanity, the vanity of its own existence and intelligence.

Since my NSTP is extremely orderly and deterministic, the ultimate questioner already knows if the NSTP would or would not answer the ultimate question. Therefore, the only reasonable thing behind the ultimate questioner’s creation is its vanity, the vanity of its own existence and intelligence.

Beware! Numbers Are All Around You

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

BEWARE!
Numbers are all around you

“I pick them at random” scoffed a friend, “I don’t believe in any of these so called systems” Of course I’d heard it all before, so I simply asked him to give me six random numbers. “Easy, Five” he started. I stopped him right there. “Why did you pick the number five?” I enquired. “At random” he insisted with a hint of a sneer “because I like ‘five’”

That was enough to prove the point. He had picked ‘five’ because he ’liked’ it. So it wasn’t’ random. Choosing a number that he liked, automatically precluded numbers which he didn’t like, and meant each number could not be selected with equal likelihood.

The problem with trying to select random numbers yourself is that you have to ‘think’ about which numbers you are going to select. No matter how intelligent you are, you will not be able to block out your own prejudices. In fact, the opposite is probably true, and a ape would be able to come up with a more representatively random set.

This is because numbers are all around us in our daily life. Your daily newspaper is brimming with numbers. From your first glance at the clock in the morning to lying down and counting sheep at night, your life can not help but be filled with numbers. So it is highly likely that at least one of those numbers will force itself into your consciousness when you set yourself the tasks of ‘thinking’ of numbers.

Sensitise yourself

Rather than fight it, my friend would have been better off taking more note of the numbers which were trying to push their way into his awareness – they could be trying to tell him something. And the same can apply to you.

1. Do you notice numbers in conversations? If someone says they missed the 3 o’clock from Paddington and someone else says they have picked up three books from the library, make note of the repeated number three.

2. Take notice of numbers that ‘jumped’ out at your from newspapers. If a football player with a number nine on his shirt catches your eye, write it down.

3. Keep note of numbers that appear on tickets given to you, or receipts you collect.

4. Don’t ignore numbers related to irritation. If a train conductor gives you hassle, take a note of his number, not to complain but to enter in the lottery. If a car cuts you up at the roundabout, note down it’s number.

All of these numbers can be used on your lottery ticket. And as I said, they just could be trying to tell
you something.

188 Stage Hero’s Journey (Monomyth) Hero’s Journey - Femme Fatale 2

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

The Hero’s Journey (Monomyth) is the template upon which the vast majority of successful stories and Hollywood blockbusters are based upon. In fact, ALL of the hundreds of Hollywood movies we have deconstructed (see URL below) are based on this 188 stage template.

Understanding this template is a priority for story or screenwriters. This is the template you must master if you are to succeed in the craft.

[The terminology is most often metaphoric and applies to all successful stories and screenplays, from The Godfather (1972) to Brokeback Mountain (2006) to Annie Hall (1977) to Lord of the Rings (2003) to Drugstore Cowboy (1989) to Thelma and Louise (1991) to Apocaplyse Now (1979)].

THERE IS ONLY ONE STORY

THE HERO’S JOURNEY:

a) Attempts to tap into unconscious expectations the audience has regarding what a story is and how it should be told.

b) Gives the writer more structural elements than simply three or four acts, plot points, mid point and so on.

c) Gives you a tangible process for building and releasing dissonance (establishing and achieving catharses, of which there are usually four).

d) Gives you a universal structural template upon which you can superimpose your situational story. This is why stories such as Alien (1979), Gladiator (2000), Midnight Cowboy (1969), American Beauty (1999), The Graduate (1967) and many others (all deconstructed at the URL below) appear to be different but are all constructed, almost sequence by sequence, in the same way.

Free Online Card Games — Getting Ready for Las Vegas

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

Free online card games that can be played over the Internet are great for practice to increase your skills or to just have fun with. Being able to take advantage of playing free card games on your computer like poker and video poker can even prepare you for making cash in the future.

Poker is becoming a popular choice of what people are playing now, in particular Texas Hold’Em. Playing for free is the best way to begin learning poker for a person who has no experience. The largest poker room on the Net has around 70,000 simultaneous players who play for real money and approximately 7 million registered users who enjoy playing for fun at the time of this writing. With all the offerings of “play for fun or for real”, it would be a good idea to look at your intentions when choosing a place to play at should you be thinking of eventually playing for cash. You can always find places that give the option to play at no cost, but some places do not offer the option to play for real money.

Video poker is very common in Las Vegas casinos as well as with online casinos. The casinos on the Internet can be played for free, plus you can find others places to play at no cost on Yahoo! Google and MSN. But when you play certain ones like “Jacks or Better”, it is a good idea to study what the payout scale is on the variety you are playing. The goal should be to find a free version that has the same odds as your favorite in Las Vegas, so you can use it to perfect your skills for winning. Keep in mind that just because you see a Jacks or Better sign on the machine in a land based casino or on your computer does not mean that the payouts are all the same. This especially holds true in land based casinos even if the signs in a group of machines are exactly the same. Payout percentages can vary from lows of 92.6% to over 100% for Jacks or Better. Now if you have a hard time locating a no cost version of your favorite, you can purchase software programs for under $40.00 that will not only let you play your favorites, but offer tutorials and counsel your play to help you get better at it.

Sometimes manufacturers of slot and video poker machines will offer versions of their video poker that can be played with no cost to the player. These are the same businesses that build the machines for Las Vegas casinos so you can really have a good time with what they periodically offer for “test play”.

Okay, now let’s talk more about Las Vegas. People spend millions having fun in the casinos there, but why should the fun stop when you leave? It is so easy to find poker software programs for Texas Hold’Em today. But with a little searching you can buy software which features Pai Gow Poker, Caribbean Stud Poker and Let It Ride. And if you like the slots there are also sites that sell CD’s for the actual Blazing 7’s, Double Diamond, Popeye, Blondie, Betty Boop slots and more. You do have to pay one time for it, but you will play for hours with no further cash outlay and be ready for the next trip. Have fun and good luck!

Creating A Piano Improvisation - The Making of December Twilight

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

“How is it done?” asked one student. “How do you create something like December Twilight?” I’ll tell you but you may be surprised at the answer.

December Twilight is a lesson piece (available at quiescencemusic.com) I created to teach students hand independence. So, how did I create it? I haven’t the slightest idea.

What I mean is, I went over to the piano like I usually do, sat down, and just started to play around. And out of nowhere, I found myself reaching for a bass note followed by an A major triad and D major chord.

Now, I′m not saying this to mystify you, but when you operate this way on the piano, the unexpected comes up. I wasn’t “trying” for anything here. I allowed myself to just be at the keyboard and with this attitude, the music that comes is always a surprise and here’s the best part - this approach always leads to the freshest sounding music!

Once the initial idea came - a left-hand ostinato pattern using a good portion of the keyboard, the rest was easy enough and that had to do with simply improvising a melody in the right hand.

Many students have problems not only coming up with material (because they′re way too hard on themselves) but also keeping it going. That is, they find themselves playing a few notes and then stop cold because they don’t know how to go forward.

The answer to this problem is similar to the approach just discussed. You see, you really aren’t in “control” of the music so to speak. It has a life of its own and if you find yourself wanting to “push” the music out, you will run into blocks. This is called the principle of respect.

There are many, many times when I go to the keyboard to play and nothing comes out. It’s frustrating! But, I know from past experience that if nothing wants to come at that particular moment, then I better get up and find something else to do.

I Think Elliot Spitzer might be the Devil?

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

You what I like about America? Well, I am allowed to have an opinion and it is wonderful to consider this and even better to speak my mind. So, I will. I really think that Elliot Spitzer might be the Devil. In fact I would bet on it, he even kind of looks like what I think a Devil is suppose to look like. So, has Satan returned to earth? Is Elliot Spitzer the big bad red devil himself? Should Satan worshipers all over the world be hailing one Elliot Spitzer?

You know there is a Satanic Church or two in New York, so I ask you will they take Elliot Spitzer as their savior and worship him? Will they walk prescints when he runs for New York Governor? It will be interesting to see exactly who is on his campaign won’t it, especially when the New York Governor’s elections comes around and Elliot Spitzer throws his hat, I mean three headed spear into the ring? But beware, the devil does not fight fair.

If Elliot Spitzer gets into office and if he really is the devil, which is my opinion then what can the fine citizens of New York expect once he takes over Gotham City? Will he more resemble the Joker, Riddler or some other dastardly cartoon character or is he really already there and the Governorship will only make it official? Consider all this in 2006.

A Guide to Violin Shops

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

There are a number of violin shops where people can buy a violin. Many shops sell both new and used violins, giving buyers a number of options. Many violin shops also offer violin rentals. New violins can cost between two hundred and twenty thousand dollars. Used violins can cost significantly less, but may be of lesser quality. Beginners and students often choose to rent a violin from a violin shop.

There are different types of violin shops. Some sell all kinds of musical instruments and offer violins from several different manufacturers. Other violin shops may make their own violins and many not sell any other brands. Obviously, the larger stores will have a better selection, but they may not have the same type of knowledgeable customer service and sales staff to help shoppers find the right violin to fit their needs. Smaller violin shops that make their own violins can be more expensive, but they often provide the best customer service and help people find exactly what they need.

Buying a used violin can be a great way to save money and still get a quality product. Used violins can have the same quality of new violins at half the price. It is important to make sure that the violin is in good condition before handing over any money. It is a good idea to get some type of warranty on used musical instruments in case they are defective and need to beo repaired.

Many violin shops also offer violin rentals. Some people, especially children or high school students may lose interest in the instrument. It is good to be able to simply return it rather than have to resell it if this happens. Violin rentals are very economical, often costing as little as $20 a month.
