How to Take Properly Exposed Wedding Pictures

Monday, May 29th, 2006

The most important thing to remember when taking pictures of weddings is that cameras will expose for mid-tones. In most photography, this is what you want. It’s what prevents pictures from getting blown out, or under developed. However, in wedding photography, you have a white object (the bride) next to a black object (the groom). In this situation, most cameras will get a tad confused and on the side of caution, under-expose.

There is a simple solution to this; set your exposure to 2/3 WHEN the bride is in the picture. Don′t forget to dial your expose back to normal when taking pictures of only the groom (in fact, you might want to go -1/3 exposure in these situations) or of the guests.

Other things which can screw up your exposure are:
- Reflections of the sun on objects (try to find something to block the reflection)
- Bright lamps/lights behind the scene. (try to find something to block the reflection)
- Bright Windows in the frame. (increase exposure by 1 )
- Mirrors and your flash (try to move so something is blocking the mirror)

By keeping this all in mind, you are more likely to get properly exposed pictures without having to photoshop them later.

Another important thing to do, regardless if you think you are sticking the exposure or not, is to take your pictures in RAW format. Although the extension and software used to manipulate RAW images differs from camera to camera, raw images offer a much broader latitude in changing the exposure settings. Where a JPEG might be able to be manipulated -1 stop, a RAW image can be manipulated -2 stops due to it containing much more meta information and it being a 16 bit image. Most cameras which shoot in raw ship with software allowing you to manipulate raw images.

Good luck!

Looking for Free Horse Racing Tips?

Many people would agree that they have tried betting at horse racing some point or other. However, most people being novice in this field tend to loose the bet more commonly than winning it. This primarily happens due to lack of knowledge regarding the ins and outs of horse racing. In such cases studying free horse racing tips indeed prove helpful.

The X-Files (Season 2) DVD Review

Sunday, May 28th, 2006

Nominated for 12 Golden Globes and 61 Emmys, including 4 for Outstanding Drama Series, The X-Files is one of the world’s most popular science-fiction drama shows. Premiering in the Fall of 1993 on the Fox Network, home of popular programs such as The Simpsons (1989) and King Of The Hill (1997), The X-Files created an entire fictional world of conspiracies and secret organizations, building a legion of fanatic followers as devoted to the series as Trekkies are to Star Trek. Creator Cris Carter, a former writer for numerous TV shows in the late-80s/early-90s - The Nanny (1993) is one example - brings together the finest aspects of suspense-laden spy novels and alien science fiction. The result is one of the top sci-fi franchises ever produced, spawning its own line of merchandise and even a full length feature film - The X-Files: Fight The Future (1998). With nine successful seasons to its credit, The X-Files is one of the longest-running sci-fi series in television history…

The X-Files follows the exploits of four FBI agents assigned to investigate a series of unsolved and mysterious cases known only as “The X-Files”. FBI special agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny), Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), John Doggett (Robert Patrick), and Monica Reyes (Annabeth Gish) are the primary agents investigating these unusual cases which could never be solved by conventional investigatory methods. But Mulder and Scully in particular play prominent roles in the series. The partnership and friendship the two develop during the course of the series sets the tone for their investigations into the paranormal with Scully, a medical doctor, playing the skeptic to Mulder’s deeply held beliefs in widespread government conspiracies and alien abductions. Through the course of the series, The X-Files covers a wide-range of frightening and mysterious subjects from killer insects and secret world government organizations to the colonization of Earth by parasitic aliens. In so doing, it adds its own unique brand of humor and an original blend of creativity that fans of the genre will certainly appreciate…

The X-Files (Season 2) DVD features a number of suspense riddled episodes including the season premiere “Little Green Men” in which we learn the fate of our heroes in the aftermath of the closing of The X-Files. Scully is working as an FBI instructor at Quantico while Mulder is tasked with an endless array of mundane “busy-work”. But Mulder refuses to quit. He meets with one his supporters in regard to The X-File project - Senator Matheson, and the meeting prompts him to investigate an abandoned SETI site in New Mexico which might hold clues to the existence of alien life-forms… Other notable episodes from Season 2 include “One Breath” in which Scully ends up in a coma for reasons unknown and Mulder must find out the truth about what happened to her, and “Fearful Symmetry″ in which Scully and Mulder investigate a series of attacks at a zoo perpendicular to a tract of land notorious for its UFO sightings…

Top Poker Room

Sunday, May 28th, 2006

If you’re looking for a top poker room online, you’re looking at a number of factors: payout rate, ease of play, good interface, and good customer service. The last one should not be underestimated. It is important for a top poker room to have good customer service if something goes wrong with your software or if you are not paid what you are owed. A good online casino will have a 24-hour support operation— telephone, email or both.

In fact, customer service is a good indication if the online casino is reputable. These days it is easier to set up an online casino that looks on the up and up: it looks as high-tech as other sites. The site may have not been around for very long and does not make good on payments. Check around in online forums to see if there are any complaints about the casino.

If you’re looking for a top poker room in a land-based casino, you can use the net to search out the better rooms at Vegas casinos, Atlantic City, or another location. It’s not quite as easy to set up a land-based casino as it is an online casino—to the tune of millions of dollars—so you can be pretty certain that a top poker room at a brick and mortar casino will be legitimate.

At a top poker room—whether real or virtual—you’ll have the opportunity to play with some of the greatest players in the game, possibly even celebrity players. A top poker room becomes “top” for a reason: it brings in the best players with the most competitive play, and the widest variety of tournament play, perhaps with multi-player games and high payouts.

Ness Notes (August 10)

Sunday, May 28th, 2006

MLB’s longest active winning streak came to an end last night, as the Rockies’ two-run ninth was enough to get them past the Dodgers by the score of 3-1. LA had won 11 straight games, its longest streak in 13 years and prevented the team’s first 12-game winning streak since 1976.

I’m passing on a free play for Thursday but do have an NFLX doubleheader for tonight’s play. Get BOTH of tonight’s 15* preseason games on just one report. In MLB, it’s my 15* AL Blowout of the Month.

The A’s and Angels owned the second and third-longest winnings streaks behind the Dodgers and both of those teams not only lost but were shutout! The A’s owned a six-game winning streak entering Wednesday′s play and lost 14-0 to the Rangers in an afternoon game. It was the worst shutout loss the A’s have ever suffered in Oakland. The Angels took a four-game winning streak into their evening game at Cleveland and lost 4-0.

Cleveland’s Jake Westbrook scattered nine hits in the Indians’ shutout of the Angels, six days after allowing 15 hits in a victory over the Red Sox. Only two other pitchers in the last 50 years have thrown a complete-game shutout after allowing as many as 15 hits in their previous appearance: Roger Clemens in 1988 and Jack Billingham in 1977.

The Rangers and Indians had both entered Wednesday’s games with losing streaks of four straight, the longest active losing streaks in MLB. Yesterday’s results leaves the Mets’ modest four-game winning streak as the longest active streak in the majors and Boston’s and Pittsburgh’s four-game losing streaks as the longest active losing streaks.

More highlights from Wednesday include the Twins beating the Tigers for the second straight night, 4-3. Johan Santana got the win and is now an almost unbelievable 34-3 during the season’s second half since the 2003 All Star break. Justin Morneau’s eighth-inning home run, the winning hit in the Twins’ 4-3 victory over the Tigers, was his 30th homer of the season.

Morneau is the first Twins player to reach that level since Kent Hrbek, Tom Brunansky, and Gary Gaetti all did it in 1987. Minnesota’s streak of 18 seasons without a 30-homer player was the longest since the White Sox ended a 69-year drought — longest in major-league history — when Bill Melton hit 33 home runs in 1970

Speaking of the White Sox, they were almost no-hit by the Yankees’ Randy Johnson but then almost made an amazing comeback in a 7-6 loss. Johnson’s bid for his third no-hitter was spoiled by Tadahito Iguchi’s single on an 0-2 pitch leading off the seventh inning. The White Sox went on to score two runs in the 7th and four in the 8th.

Johnson owns two career no-hitters, including MLB’s last perfect game (against the Braves on May 18, 2004). There have been 5,990 games played since May 19, 2004, by far the longest span of games without a no-hitter in major-league history. It was 12th time that Johnson held his opponent hitless through six innings, the highest total among active pitchers. The Rocket has done it seven times and Pedro six times.

While many may not like the idea of the wild card, it sure keeps things interesting. There’s a great three-team race brewing in the AL as the 67-46 Twins lead the 66-46 White Sox and the 65-47 Red Sox. The 59-55 Reds lead the way over in the NL, closely followed by the 58-56 D’backs and Dodgers. Just 3 1/2 games back at 55-58 are three more teams the Astros, Phillies and Rockies. Stay tuned.

Thursday’s 11-game schedule features three afternoon games, two of which begin as I go to press (but are worth mentioning). The Padres are in New York to take on the Mets (12:10 ET) and the Cards are in Cincinnati to take on the Reds (12:35 ET). Chris Young starts for San Diego and 6-10 third-year player is an amazing 5-0 (2.42) on the road in 10 starts this year with the Padres winning nine of the 10 games.

Bronson Arroyo starts for the Reds and he will be making his 10th try for his 10th win. That’s right. Arroyo moved to 9-3 on the 2006 season with a 4-2 June 19 win against the Mets. However, he’s made nine previous attempts to win his 10th game of the year, going 0-4 with a 5.31 ERA (team is 3-6 in his nine starts)!

NFL notes

Week 1 of the NFL’s preseason opens tonight with the Browns at the Eagles (7:30 ET) and the Colts at the Rams (8:00 ET on FOX). Two interesting streaks are on the line tonight, as the Browns take a seven-game preseason ATS winning streak into their game with the Eagles. Romeo Crennel in his rookie year as Cleveland’s head coach led the Browns to a 3-1 (4-0 ATS) mark last year plus the Browns had ‘covered’ their last three games of the 2004 preseason as well.

When the Colts meet the Rams tonight, in the NFL coaching debut for Scott Linehan, they’ll be trying to snap a six-game (1-5 ATS) preseason losing streak. The Colts went 0-5 SU and ATS in last year preseason plus lost (but covered) in their final game of the 2004 preseason as well. Just a word to the wise, the Colts were so devastated by last year’s poor preseason mark, they opened the 2005 regular season by winning their first 13 games!

The Chiefs, who visit the Texans on Saturday night (8:00 ET on CBS), also own a six-game preseason losing streak and the Chiefs have one-upped the Colts, going 0-6 ATS in those six losses. The Broncos, who went 4-0 in last year’s preseason (3-1 ATS), own the longest active preseason winning streak.

Tomorrow’s notes will focus on some of the best and worst recent preseason records plus offer some tidbits on a number of NFL coaches and how they’ve fared over the years in these “practice games.”

Review: Jenny Lewis - “Rabbit Fur Coat”

Sunday, May 28th, 2006

For those of you used to the rock/pop flavor of Rilo Kiley’s typical fare, you might be a little surprised by the more folky direction Lewis has taken with her personal songwriting. Her new songs are somewhat reminiscient of “More Adventurous” and “The Absence of God,” but the addition of the Watson Twins’ throaty harmonies take the transition one step further until you’re looking at what may as well be a gospel/country album.

Not that this is a bad thing. In fact, maybe Jenny Lewis is born to play this role. After all, her songs tell great stories; she can sing about the blues like few others I’ve heard. For example, in the album’s title track, the repetition of a simple 3 or 4 chords is all you need to provide the background for the true star of the song: the story it sings.

In the end, the album’s a hit. And are you ready for the best part? You can download all the tracks for free except for one (a rolicking cover of the Traveling Wilburys’ “Handle with Care” performed with the aid of M. Ward, Connor Oberst, and Ben Gibbard), and I’d highly recommend doing so. And once you’ve done that, buy “Handle with Care” off iTunes for $.99. It’s certainly a steal for an album that (in my opinion) is worth much more than the price of a Junior Bacon Cheeseburger.

Favorite Tracks: “Happy,” “Melt Your Heart,” “Rabbit Fur Coat,” “Handle With Care”

Warriors’ Monta Ellis Wins NBA’s Most Improved Player Award

Saturday, May 27th, 2006

Two years ago Monta Ellis slipped down the draft board and everyone had practically forgotten all about him then.

However, now the NBA knows all about this young guard from the Golden State Warriors. He has been awarded the Most Improved Player for changing from an unrecognised high schooler from Mississippi to a fast and quick scoring threat for the Warriors.

This was the closest voting in the history of the award. Ellis won is by a slim margin of three points over Sacramento Kings’ Kevin Martin. Ellis received 47 votes and 352 points from the media panel while Martin received 44 votes and 349 points.

This season under the new coach Don Nelson, Ellis averaged 16.5 points, 4.1 assists and 3.2 rebounds. He was part of the team that was instrumental in getting the Warriors to return to the playoffs after a gap of 12 years.

Ellis was a second round pick in the draft and during his rookie season he averaged 6.8 points. This year, his improvement in scoring was the largest increase in the NBA. He came to the forefront of the nation in the Rookie Challenge during the All Star weekend where he scored 28 points.

In his second season, Ellis turned out to be a major contributor to the Warriors’ fast paced offense. He not only earned his teammates trust and playing in key situations, he also learned to play point guard on Nelson’s request. Only New Orleans’ Chris Paul with 17.2 points has averaged more points per game this season amongst the second year pros.

How Much Spanish Do You Really Need?

Saturday, May 27th, 2006

What is your ultimate goal as it relates to learning Spanish? What do you want to accomplish with learning the Spanish language?

Very important questions. How you answer them would determine how fast and how well you will learn Spanish. Let’s take a closer look at this.

The root of any language is the words. What good would it do you if you learn the Spanish grammar, pronunciation, tenses and all of the other theory, when you only know 5 Spanish words? Your Spanish language knowledge would be useless because you won’t be able to communicate. And without communication, nothing happens.

Think of the grammar, pronunciation, tenses and so on, as the branches of a tree. The fruits of the tree would be the results of you speaking the language. Better you speak it, tastier the fruits. The branches hold the fruits and draw food for the fruits from the root. But, without the root, there will be no tree and no fruits.

Now, the Spanish language, like any other language, is colossal as far as speaking it fluently and understanding the language as would a native Spanish speaker. Even though the Spanish alphabet is estimated to have half as many words as the English alphabet, you still have the same ratio of words for an everyday normal communication.

Therefore, being familiar with the grammar, pronunciation and the other theory is given. Without branches, what would the fruits grow on? But, it’s the amount of words and the type of words that you need to consider when answering the questions above. Unless you seek to become a Spanish poet, you need not to memorize all the words in the Spanish dictionary. Only about 500–1500 words are used in active vocabulary, or conversational vocabulary.

To be safe, building a vocabulary of at least 1500 to 2000 words would be favorable. This is because even though you can control the words you use, you cannot control the words the other person is using. Because of this, you need to learn more words to understand well than you need to speak well.

Question: What kind of words do you need to learn?

Answer: People speak about 75 percent of the time in six general areas of life.

- Family
- Business
- Personal care
- Travel/transportation
- Food/dining
- Sports

If you want to learn to communicate well, you need to learn about 300 to 350 words in each of these six areas. What good would it do you if you learn 1500 words in rocket engineering or any other specific field for that matter?

Let’s say that you are a doctor of some kind. If you learn 1500 words of medical terminology, you would not be able to communicate with your patients as well as any average person, because they will talk most of the time in the above six areas.

If you want to learn words that specifically apply to your profession, you still need to cover the six areas of life (listed above) in order to communicate well with anyone. So, the answer to the questions atop would be your reason for learning Spanish.

If you need to learn Spanish for an everyday communication, stick only to the six general areas of life. If you need it for your career, just add one more (or however many more you need) to the above six areas. This way you will have a clear path to walk on, and you would know exactly what to study.

Question: How do you memorize all these words in the fastest time possible?

Answer: Several ways. You don′t have to practice all of these, but use whichever helps you remember better.

- Repetition - decide that you will learn 5-10 new words every day. So, you have the whole day from morning till night to learn the words and repeat them over and over until they get engraved in your brain. The next day, repeat those words one time before learning the next set of words. The day after, repeat the words one time from the previous two days before learning the next set of words. And so on. Create a cut-off point so you don′t repeat the words from the previous 30 days. Let’s say, you would repeat the words only from the 5 days prior to your current day.

- Create a silly game - people have a great tendency to remember funny or silly things. So, make it fun. For an example: the Spanish word for “tree” is “arbol” pronounced [AHR-bohl]. When cutting a tree down, before it falls, the person yells: tiiiiimbeeeerrrr. So instead, substitute it with: ahrrrrrrbohohohohohohohlll. Now, think of any other silly ways of remembering other words. The people who may struggle with this method are the analytical thinkers. People who are very fact oriented and have difficulty with out-of-the-box thinking need to loosen up and have some fun. It will help.

- Picture association - the Spanish word for “book” is “libro″ pronounced [LEEB-roh]. Any time you see a book, you automatically reference it to the English word “book”. Instead, every time you see a book, reference it to the Spanish word “libro″. So, when you go to the bookstore or a library, don’t say: “So many books to choose from”, but say: “So many ‘libros’ to choose from”.

- Retroactivity - retroactivity is the cousin to repetition. Repetition is how many times you repeat something in a given time period, while retroactivity is how long you use and apply it from when you initially learned it. You can do 20 repetitions of a Spanish word over ten minutes or you can do 20 repetitions of the same word over five days. If you do it over five days (retroactivity) it will store more easily into your long-term memory than if you do it the same number of times (repetition) in ten minutes. Try this out and you’ll be amazed of the results.

- Usage - use the words you learn as much as possible. Find ways to use them even if you have to use them on your cat or a dog.

- Your way - you may have your special way to remember things, so use it. Or, you may invent you own unique way to remember things better.

The Truth about Automatic Sweepstakes Entry Services

Saturday, May 27th, 2006

If you read about automatic sweepstakes entry services online, you will hear many rumors. Most of these are honest misunderstandings written by people who don’t know how automatic entry systems work. Here are some of the most common myths about automatic sweepstakes entry services, and our response to them.

1. Most Contests Prohibit Automatic Entry Services from Participating

There is a common misconception that most sweepstakes prohibit entries from automatic services and that people who use a sweepstakes service will be disqualified from every sweep they enter.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

Legitimate entry services are dedicated to selecting only sweepstakes where their members have a legitimate chance of winning. To ensure this, they scour the rules of each individual contest and giveaway to ensure that automatic sweepstakes entry services are not prohibited.

Despite being very selective and rejecting any sweep where automatic entry is prohibited, there are still hundreds upon hundreds of contests available.

Legitimate sweepstake entry services do not have any problems finding sweepstakes with fantastic prizes for its members to enter, despite respecting the contest rules and the wishes of any sweepstakes sponsor who prefers that their members not enter.

2. People Don’t Really Win through Automated Sweepstakes Entry Services

The people on the Winner’s Lists would strongly disagree!

Legitimate sweepstakes entry programs only list people who have won through their service on their Winner’s List.

Furthermore, a Winner’s List is only a small sampling of the members who have won through an automatic sweepstakes entry service. Such services rely on their members to tell them when they have won a prize. Anyone who has won through a service but wants their prizes to remain private is not included on the Winner’s List.

3. You Can’t Tell What You’re Being Entered Into with Automatic Contest Services

A good sweepstakes entry service will provide each of its members with a personalized listing of sweepstakes that have been entered for them. A new sweepstake is only added to that list when they receive a confirmation or “thank you” page for that specific entry, so members can be sure that their individual entry was really accepted.

The sweepstakes listing should be available for members at all times, and is updated at least twice a day.

This gives you a solid overview of the entries that you receive, and allows you to enter additional sweepstakes on your own without fear of duplicating entries.

4. Contest Sponsors Don’t Like Automatic Sweepstakes Entry Services

The number of sweepstakes sponsors that contact entry services directly to ask them to include their contests in their sweepstakes selections shows that this just isn’t true!

Sweepstakes sponsors receive a number of benefits from inclusion in an automated entry service. Most companies run promotions to increase their brand awareness and draw new people to their website, and entry services allow them to reach a broader audience at no additional cost.

They have the chance to contact every one of the service’s customers through confirmation emails, which often include marketing information, and they will also benefit from links to their contest pages, which members can follow for more information about the product.

People are more likely to buy from a sponsor that hosts a sweepstake because they have a positive feeling toward the company, and this remains true for people who are entered through automatic services as well.

Savvy marketers realize that automatic entry helps the sweepstakes sponsors as much as it helps the entrants – a true win-win situation for everyone!

And if a contest sponsor decides that automatic sweepstakes entries will not help their marketing plan, they can simply put a line in their rules prohibiting them, and legitimate entry services will not enter the contest.

5. You’ll Get Buried in Spam if you Join an Automatic Sweepstakes Entry Service

A good automatic entry service takes great pains to select only sweepstakes from reliable companies that will not send an unreasonable amount of marketing information to the entrant. While members will receive some promotional information, companies that will sell your name and address or pass on your personal information to marketing partners will not be selected.

It’s always a good idea to set up a separate email address for its automatic entries, which makes it easy to find win notifications. If you are receiving emails or newsletters that you do not wish to read at that email address, simply opt out of the marketing list.

Discover Thailand’s Priceless Beauty

Saturday, May 27th, 2006

The Benjarong is Thailand’s priceless contribution to Asian pottery. Once the prized possession of royal palaces and upper-class Thais, it is today, the pride and perfection of ancient Thai craftsmanship.

But what exactly is the Benjarong and why does it possess such magical qualities with sheer beauty and serenity? Read on to unravel the history and making of this ancient masterpiece.

History of the Benjarong

During the early Ayutthaya period (1350 – 1767), Thai craftsmen made a somewhat crude multi-colored earthenware known today as the Benjarong – a term based on the Sanskrit words panch, meaning five, and rang, meaning colors, thus literally referring to the ‘five-colored.’ The style of painting multi-colored enamels on a white porcelain base was influenced by the Chinese Ming dynasty, and by the 17th century, the Benjarong became an exclusive household possession of rulers and high nobility – marking a period where high quality Benjarongs with unique Thai designs were produced. Colored enamels added over the glaze were fused to the surface in a descending scale of temperatures. The Benjarongs were also decorated with swirling flame-like motifs and Thai-style thepanoms, or celestial beings. These were made exclusively for the royal household as utilitarian items, such as rice bowls, stem plates and covered water jars. Shortly after, artisans applied 12 or 18 carat gold onto Benjarongs to enhance their appearance.

The Making of a Benjarong

The making of the Benjarong is a long and arduous process requiring great patience and complete dedication. A prolonged heat treatment is required after the object is made, and once again after the hand painting is done. The drying process of the hand painting cannot be accelerated by using a fan or blower, as this prevents the colors from fusing into the ceramics.

The process:

1.The ceramic ware is hand made into the specific size and shape desired.
2.The ceramic ware is heated at over 500 degrees for over 6-7 hours.
3.A few hours is spent on polishing the baked ceramic ware to smoothen the surface.
4.A thin layer of glaze is applied onto the smoothened ceramic ware.
5.The ceramic ware is heated once again to give it a glazed and polished surface.
6.A craftsman then hand paints some designs onto the polished ceramic ware.
7.Every color needs to be completely dried in order to apply a new color, taking from hours to days to complete.
8.The finished hand painting on the ceramic ware is left to dry for another 6 hours.
9.The painted ceramic ware is heated once again at over 500 degrees for 5-6 hours, as this ensures that the colors are fused into the Benjarong.

The Benjarong today is one of the most popular types of ceramics in Thailand. Known to be the most exquisite for its hand painted designs, it is of little wonder that these masterpieces are exclusively produced by only the most talented and highly skilled of Thai artisans.
