The Hanging Gardens at Babylon (Its Ecological Miracle)

Tuesday, February 28th, 2006

There they lay, under the sway
Of King Nebuchadnezzar’s
Magnificent city, Kingdom,
In the 6th Century B.C.;
To enchant the world,
And his home sick queen
(Median Princess Amytis)
The city with the legend, of:
The Hanging Gardens at Babylon—:
Primeval City of the world;
Here humanity marveled
At its city gardens, its Water
System—now but a mystery
Now but a crumbled city
In the desert sun, in Iraq…
But one needs to look deep
Deep down in the callers beneath
The palace (deeper than they have)
There they will find the riddle
Of how and why: three shafts
Sided by side, and a chain-pump
Structure, there resides…
Seven levels high the
Gardens stood (some 365 feet
Above the ground (the days
Of a year)) water pushes water
And magnetic gravity with the
Help of the moon, pulls: up,
Up to its roots, helping
This ecological miracle, and
This magnificent city’s fable?

#1784 (4-5-2007)

A Note: It has puzzled folks for centuries on how the Gardens were watered in Babylon, back in 604- to about 560 B.C., perhaps too much so. And I suppose they need to do more digging to find out exactly the correct method, but it doesn’t seem all that complicated to me. When it was built on levels, 365 feet high with several pumps to help it along, and man power was next to free, and add simple gravity to the picture, and a touch of the pull from the earth’s moon. In the out skirts of Cajamarca, Peru is an aqueduct, called El acueducto de Cumbe Mayo, 3000-years old, water runs up hill (the aqueduct is 9000mts thus, there is nothing new under the sun.)

TrainerTrackStats Newsletter #3

Tuesday, February 28th, 2006

With less than three weeks to go until the start of the Cheltenham Festival, pretty much all of the big trials have now been run, and – if anything – the waters seem muddier than ever.

For the main events, there seem to be numerous contenders with legitimate chances.

Firstly, looking at the Champion Hurdle, the form of Detroit City was again upheld by Straw Bear winning a muddling affair at Wincanton in the Kingwell Hurdle. I was there last Saturday, and did a good few quid on the second horse, Afsoun. The time of the race though was slower than the novice hurdle over the same trip, won impressively by a David Pipe inmate, Osana. (Both Osana and Song Of Songs, who finished behind him, look horses to follow at Aintree rather than Cheltenham).

So if Detroit City looks good in light of Straw Bear’s performance, what of the Irish contenders? Both Mac’s Joy and Harchibald capitulated in the face of a relentless gallop set up front by Champion Chaser, Newmill. Although Mac’s Joy was not beaten far, and a stiffer stamina test will suit, it must be disappointing to connections of both horses that they were beaten by an animal who won’t even run in the race!

It’s still difficult for me to pick the winner, as the most likely candidate, Detroit City, has a welter statistical burden to overcome, being a winner of last season’s Triumph Hurdle and, therefore, a five year old. Increasingly, form says he will win, but I can’t ignore the stats, so will probably try Hardy Eustace and Macs Joy each way.

The Champion Chase picture has improved over the past fortnight, with big prep runs from Well Chief and the aforementioned Newmill.
Well Chief had been off the track for almost two years before returning in style, thrashing Ashley Brook (Voy Por Ustedes unseated and Foreman pulled up). Assuming there is no bounce factor (i.e. the exertion leading him to underperform next time), WC looks a worthy favourite.

Of those in behind, Foreman looks better on a flat track, as we saw when he won at Aintree last year, turning the Arkle tables with Voy Por Ustedes, while the last named remains something of an enigma. Clearly a very good horse, and from a top stable, we have learned little in a predictable second to Kauto Star, a predictable beating of Oneway, and an unpredictable unseating (he is normally a very safe conveyance) behind Well Chief.

At the prices, and with the chance that Well Chief could bounce, I’d want to oppose him, though I’d be delighted to see him crowned champion, as I think he’s a special horse. So, while my heart says Well Chief, my wallet says Voy Por Ustedes. The record of Arkle winners in the Champion Chase is impressive, and this fellow will be ready to run for his life on the day.

One other horse worth a mention is Nickname. His trainer says he will only run if the ground is soft or softer, and he is in to run on Sunday in Ireland. He could yet prove to be a fly in the punting ointment.

Moving on to the World Hurdle, this race revolves around one horse. Black Jack Ketchum is his name, and there are two schools of thought on his ability. The first says he is a good horse, who has been placed shrewdly by his trainer (Jonjo O’Neill), and who was finally found out against other good horses last time. The other says that he is a very good horse, and he didn’t run to his form last time. I have to concede to being a fence sitter, as I can see the merit of both arguments.

As a punter, I will not be rushing to take the 7/4, of that I am certain. So where is the value? Well, clearly his usurper from last time, Blazing Bailey, must figure. Placed behind Detroit City in last year’s Triumph Hurdle, he’s proved himself a gutsy horse, and a thorough stayer this year, and his trainer (Alan King) knows what it takes to win this race, having done the business last year with My Way De Solzen. It’s interesting to note that his trainer reckons he should have won the Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot (where he finished only fourth to Mighty Man, having had a very troubled run).

Of the others, Inglis Drever and Mighty Man have their chances but wouldn’t be for me and – further down the lists – Overstrand would be of interest if taking his chance. He’s one tough and genuine customer, and runner up in the Tote Gold Trophy followed by victory a week later in a big handicap at Ascot last weekend. There are question marks over both his class and whether he stays but, at 40/1, he might be worth a little speculative wager.

Finally, in the Gold Cup, I have nailed my colours to the mast here on numerous previous occasions, and I see no reason to desert the Exotic Dancer ship now. Kauto Star is clearly the form horse, but he has a tendency to clatter a fence or two, and may well get found out over the twenty-six furlongs and twenty-two fences of the race. (I’m still talking through my pocket, having backed him when he came down early in the Champion Chase last year..!)
Elsewhere on the likely starters list, there are a number of Irish horses who have a squeak, notably last year’s winner War Of Attrition, and In Compliance, but it has always been, and remains, Exotic Dancer for me.

A novelty punt on Kingscliff might reward small stakes each way: he has two types of running, but – if he gets out of his stable on the right side – could give you a run at triple figure odds (119/1 as I write) on Betfair currently.

Next time, I’ll look at the novice races and also the handicaps, though I have to concede that I’m no expert on the latter….!

SYSTEM ANGLE: Grand National Follow Up
———————————

Now that the weights have been published, it seems a very good time to review the Aintree Grand National picture from a stats angle. To recap, these are the reasons it is a good stats race:

- No other race has so many horses lining up

- No other race is run over such an extreme distance

- No other race has the Aintree fences (with the exception of races at the track of course)

- No other race offers such much prize money and kudos (attracting some very classy horses)

- No other race is guaranteed to be run at a frantic pace from the outset

- No French race is run over anything like this distance (French breds don’t stay the trip!)

The stats angle for the race says to follow the logic. This means that we’re looking for:

- a proven stayer (won over 3m );

- a reliable jumper (less than two falls in the last two seasons), and at least into his third season jumping;

- a horse that has won in a field of at least 12;

- a horse mature enough to win the race, but not past his best (aged 8-12);

- a horse in the handicap proper, but carrying 11stone or less (i.e. scheduled to carry 10-00 to 11-00);

- a horse with proven class (placed in a Grade 3 chase or better);

- a horse who was not bred in France (some have run close, none have won…);and,

- Pay special attention to the Irish (especially if they’ve been hurdling!); and,

- Favour horses who have jumped the Aintree fences

This makes the 119 entries truncate to a rather more manageable twelve (I previously quoted eight horses, due to some confusion on my part about French bred horses. If a horse has only one French parent, then it is not classed as a French bred, hence some horses have been reinstated). Seven of the eight I previously mentioned remain (Numbersixvalverde has to carry 11-03 and is discounted on this basis):

Point Barrow - Irish National winner off top weight

Graphic Approach - Run some eye catching races for his shrewd trainer who went close with Mely Moss

Naunton Brook - Sound form, safe jumper, trainer won with Earth Summit. Entered in Red Sq Gold Cup on 17th Feb

Cloudy Bays - Excellent form in Ireland, has been running in hurdles, but may have to carry too much weight?

Dun Doire - Cheltenham Festival winner for very shrewd trainer, hampered when unseated last year, been running in hurdles races since Grand National ‘06

Garvivonnian - An old friend of mine, races prominently and jumps well, so will give a run for money. Doubtful stayer though, alas.

Silver Birch - my big ante-post wager last year, before things went inexplicably wrong. Has been nursed back to form by lesser known Irish trainer and finished 2nd in a cross country race at Punchestown last weekend.

To these we now add:

Little Brick: Much hyped recruit, who won well at Wincanton last weekend. To my eye, he looked a very good jumper but a doubtful stayer.

Longshanks: No real negatives, and from a stable who has won the race before. Has jumped the Aintree fences twice before in shorter races.

Nil Desperandum: Moved to Venetia Williams this season, and has been backed for the race.

Puntal: Ran an unbelievable race last year to finish 6th, after 400 days off the track. He’s a bit fitter this year, so could run very well.

Jack High: Former Betfred (aka Whitbread) Gold Cup winner, who was near the top of ante-post lists last year.

So, this is my Dirty Dozen for the race. Some obvious contenders here, and hopefully some interesting dark horses. I have a number of betfair wagers in the triple digit odds, so let’s hope one of them obliges!

COMING SOON: TRAINERFLATSTATS / NAG-NAG-NAG
——————————

Another quick plug for TrainerFlatStats, which is in development and is progressing well. As the name suggests, it’s the same concept but for the flat turf season beginning on 31st March (a very late start this year).

As I mentioned last letter, I’m also planning to introduce a site where TTS / TFS customers and non-customers alike can discuss the burning racing issues of the day, catch up on news stories, and rip me to shreds for my abject blog ramblings.

This site now has a name, though it’s not yet operational.
Step forward, nag-nag-nag.co.uk, the home of racing ranting! (And, hopefully, slightly more informed, insightful and instructive discussions).

I will of course keep you appraised of developments as time passes.

THE TTS JOKE
————-

A group of 3rd, 4th and 5th graders, accompanied by two female teachers, went on a field trip to the local racetrack to learn about thoroughbred horses and the supporting industry, but mostly to see the horses.
When it was time to take the children to the bathroom, it was decided that the girls would go with one teacher, and the boys would go with the other. The teacher assigned to the boys was waiting outside the men’s room when one of the boys came out and told her that none of them could reach the urinal.
Having no choice, she went inside, helped the boys with their pants, and began hoisting the little boys up one by one - holding onto their “tools″ to direct the flow away from their clothes.
As she lifted one, she couldn’t help but notice that he was unusually well endowed. Trying not to show that she was staring, the teacher said, “You must be in the 5th.” “No, ma’am,” he replied, “I’m the jockey riding Silver Arrow in the 4th, but thanks for the lift.”

Why Is Paris Hilton So Famous

Tuesday, February 28th, 2006

I don’t wanna knock Paris Hilton and I have nothing against her but why is so she famous? Is it because of her looks? Her talent? Because she’s rich? Because she’s sexy? Brilliant?

If it’s her looks, is she better looking than a host of other female beauties like Halle Berry, Alicia Keys, Gwen Stafanie, Angelina Jollie, etc., etc.?

If it’s her talent, what talent? Can she really act, sing, dance, produce or direct?

Is she brilliant?

Someone may say it’s because she’s sexy, but is she more sexy than Pamela Anderson, Jenna Jamison, Selma Hayek, Nicole kidman, Christina Ricci, Halle Berry, or a slew of other attractive female celebrities who don’t receive nearly the attention she does?

Is it because she’s rich? Now we can all agree that she damn sure is rich! That’s the thing that initially got her the media spotlight.

But there’s another factor we’re overlooking in our quest for the answer to why she so famous: her infamous sex tape! That tape really helped put her on the media map didn’t it? A timely sex tape can really grab the public’s attention and light up one’s career just ask Pamela Anderson, Rob Lowe etc.

One talent Paris Hilton does seem to have is the ability to work the media and keep her image in the center of the public and media spotlight. The Media never met a celebrity it didn′t like! And she certainly knows how to keep the guys attention doesn′t she, fellas?

But the real reason Paris is so famous is…..You guessed it…..Us! We the public never met a celebrity we didn′t like either! For all of Paris’ sexiness, beauty, “talent” and wealth, if we the public, weren′t so fascinated with the rich and famous would we even know her name?

Some of us live vicariously through the lives of the rich and famous, wishing that we could live the lives they live and do the things they do. Some of us fantasize about being involved with them! Some of us love them, some of us hate them, but they’re the center of our attention! These factors are all part of the reason for Paris Hilton’s celebrity and why she so famous.

But isn’t it a sad commentary on us and our culture that someone can become a media star and a pop culture icon just because they’re rich? Not because of the kind of person they are, or what they’ve done for society, but just because they’re rich?

The One Thing That Can Set You Out From the Rest to Make Better Techno!

Tuesday, February 28th, 2006

Listen. This is vitally important. If you do not listen then your track will be very poor indeed. Listening is what most musicians have forgot to do and that is why we do not hear from them again. They have lost their roots, what ultimately made them famous. Trying to move away from your group roots is very risky. The Prodigy made fantastic rave and deep techno, then starting to go into a rock phase. It didn′t work out too well, now they are trying to get back into their old territory but its hard. Their fan-base has shrunk as new groups have come up. The Prodigy are now releasing their classic hits to try and re-energise themselves to grab back their old fans, telling them “remember this, you liked it and now we are going to do the same”.

Alot of money spent, alot of marketing time used. With example 2, Elton John has constantly chirped out piano tunes for along time now, always variation on the same theme and he is still lasting the time.

Listening to your audience, your dedicated audience (that will buy from you regularly) is the life-line to your selling. Go off-track and some will not like it but then again you might attract some new customers. For me, I would stick to what you know, you are good at it so why change? Sure re-invent yourself or adapt to the ever changing music market, but never change style. Case in point. Kyle, pop queen and the lady who brought us the Locomotion and I should Be So Lucky. But instead of keeping with cheesy pop she has slowly re-invented herself- pinnicling at Can′t Get Your Out Of My Head. Same pop, but with 21st Century twist.

Listening also means you should listen to other tracks, go to concerts, clubs, wherever they play your music. DJs are always, and have to be, up-to-date with “whats hot and whats not”. They listen to their audience, and they know sure well that if they get it wrong they either won’t work again or they will get booed at!

Listen to other peoples comments. I had a real hard time listening to other people rip my music apart but I realised it was for the best. You must make sure that the people who listen to your music is your sudience. If you do Drum and Bass and give a track to your grandparents to hear they might not like it. Playing a track to your friends of similar style liking, or a group of people is much better. A group increases the reliability of your “little study into your tracks”, more people increases the reliability and gives you a better opinion of how your tracks will be accepted. If one person says “ohh I didnt like that sample” keep it in mind, but if alot of people say the same, change the sample. It is a rare oportuinity to see how your audience will react to your tracks, in the real world your sales would reduce, and you would just scratch your head wondering why.

Listen to the best in the genre. If you want to know what excellent and top techno tracks sound like ask your target audience who their top artists are, sometimes you might get inspiration from artists that you haven’t heard from before, then surround yourself with the tracks. Listen to the tracks and bathe in their coolness.

Listening can sometimes mean not to listen. Sounds strange I know. But if you have been listening to your tracks day in day out, then listen to other peoples tracks, you can get a bit bored, tired, and to a point the tracks get samey. Have a day out in the week for a no music day. When you come back to your work you will be refreshed, your ears will be willing to take a pounding and you will listen to your music differently, tagging pieces that don’t fit, sounding strange or having a better idea to implement.

Listen to the worst music. Now this isn’t an exercise of laughing at poor techno, but it is to train you to what is poor and what is good. For an example, if I sat in any Ferarri I would think it is pretty cool, but top motor journalists would always give a downside, will always compare it to something else. Why? Because they have sat in poor cars and they have sat in the best, now they have a scale to use to judge any car. This is what you need to do. How do you know a good song is a good song? Subliminaly you cross-reference it with something poor. But instead of doing it in the back of your mind, dig out the poor songs and (unfortunatley) listen to them. Another example. I have seen on some websites they give away cassettes of their work. I know that this is poor practise because I have seen MP3s being offered for download (quicker, free and better quality).

Listen to other styles. This may be tringgering the “what is he talking about” response, but hold with me. On my site I have demonstrated a fundamental fact through alot of top techno acts. They all have elements of different styles interwound within their own. For example, The Shamen and The Prodigy have most noticable rock influences. The great thing about rock is that there is only a few things that you can do with an electic guitar. So their tracks have to be really catchy, employing good lyrics, cool bass and hookable leads. It is no wonder then that other artists from other styles look to rock as an influence. If I was into ambient music, I would listen to classical music for inspiration. Both are similar to each other in that they have long sweeps and can go on for a while but still sound fresh, evolving, and can still use hooks. Classical music has been an influence for William Orbit (helped Madonna with her Ray of Light CD, including that cool track Frozen), and he technoified Barbers Adaigo for Strings, a cool classical track in itself and was brought into the light when it was played in Platoon.

Finally Listen to yourself. Why did you make the track in the first place? Were you going to build it up into a cool chorus, or was there an idea that you wanted to tinker around with that sounded really cool? Not knowing where the track is going, not seeing the light at the end of the tracks tunnel, or the loops are just not sitting right can have a negative effect on your confidence and moral. Write down what you would like to see from this track. Maybe even before you start get all the basic loops, or downloading website names all collected before setting off. If the track is just a notepad, make it so, don′t spend too much time on something that is just a sketch pad. If it doen′t work, fine, but why, if you have no joy, leave it. Go back to it later on, don′t make yourself too angry or involved in something that can have a nehgative impact on all your techno making.

10 Actions To Take *NOW* To Triple CD $ales Overnight

Monday, February 27th, 2006

If you are like most independent recording artists, one thing that you can always use is more CD sales. Below, are ten alternative unique actions that you can take now to begin tripling your CD sales overnight.

A. CD Gig Sale Co-Op

I′ve mentioned this one in a previous issue, but it bears reiterating. Basically it works this way:

Arrange a cooperative agreement between your band and similar bands, say 2-3, whereby you each agree to promote and sell each other’s CDs at each other’s respective gigs. You also stipulate a sales price and an agreed upon number of units.

B. Distribute Samples At Genre Nightclubs

Here, you will contact club managers in your area whose deejays either play your genre of music or host live bands in your genre. This works best in clubs that specifically have deejays and do not have live bands. You ask the club manager for permission to distribute your samplers to club patrons. Even better, is if you agree to pay the club a small fee for allowing you to do so.

On the sampler, simply include approximately 2 minutes of each song. Naturally, these sampler discs are CDs that you will “burn” in your computer or you may choose to have your samplers manufactured. You also want to be sure to leave your website address on the sampler’s cover, as a file within the compact disc, and on the sampler’s label itself.

C. Distribute Samples At Football Games

What a perfect opportunity to get some free exposure than by distributing your sampler at football games. However, be sure to obtain permission from the school prior to doing so. If this feat works, you can also distribute at other school sports as well.

D. Distribute Samplers at Colleges and their Dances

Not only are colleges great territories to distribute your free samplers, but they have several opportunities to do so that include; games, dances and other school and social functions, as well as by simply walking around the campus and handing samplers out to students. Again, be sure to obtain permission from the college administration or student activities office beforehand.

E. Tee Shirts

If your budget will allow, you could make an investment in an order of tee shirts that promote your band name, logo and website address.

F. College Radio Interviews

Contact area colleges and offer to interview with them as a part of their content. If agreed, be sure to provide the host or producer a copy of your complete CD in advance.

G. College Television Interviews

Same as above. Contact college television stations and offer to be an interview subject. If you also have a video, this is a perfect time to have it aired during your interview. In fact, if you have a professional video, this may be the only calling card you need to get the interview.

H. Interview with College Newspapers

College newspapers are a boon for exposure because they can feature both interviews and music reviews. Hence, you should strongly consider them as an interview possibility as well as consider them for low-cost advertising of your new music release.

I. Flea Markets

There are some incredibly large flea markets that are open to the general public on weekends. And, there is the likely chance that, at least, one exists in your area. Contact the management and offer to play for free as entertainment in exchange for management allowing you to sell your CDs. I have been to many large flea markets but I cannot recall ever seeing a band performing. This could be a great start in exposure and sales for you and fellow bands.

J. Customized ID Checks

Offer radio stations a free customized station ID check for them to air. If you have a fairly good area following, this will work even better. Station ID checks sound something to the effect of…

“Hi, this is John Thomas from The Stinging Lizards. Whenever I awake in the morning, my alarm clock is always set to KTAV 103 FM.”

With these ten steps, you can easily see how implementing only several of them regularly and consistently, could, indeed, quickly and easily triple your CD sales.

The Untapped Benefits of Gambling

Monday, February 27th, 2006

Although different social organizations associate gambling phenomenon with negative meaning, many consider gambling a fantastic hobby or excellent type of entertainment. Gambling options undergo the process of transformation from being exclusively a privilege of land casinos to becoming an important asset of virtual reality around the globe. Effortless accessibility and loyal customer service invite more players to step up to the plate and feel the rush of gambling online despite a gambler stigma. In fact, gambling experience as whole, projects exceptional benefits, something that cannot always be seen within casino walls or on the computer screen. Land based casinos as well as online facilities provide significant employment ratio percentage, a fact that immediately puts gambling industry on the top of social map. Gambling fights unemployment in the best way it can, to be more specific by offering a rich assortment of positions for qualified and unqualified employees. Furthermore, do not forget that gambling industry covers a wide range of activities, what poses a solid platform for individuals to fit in related sectors like construction workers to build casino hotels, technicians to manufacture and maintain gaming machines, operators to run casino sites or veterinarians and hospitality workers in the racing industry.

Some people might claim that all forms of betting convey a demanding passion, but lady gambling likes to share her fortune for the sake of great goals. Best online casinos and poker rooms organize televised tournaments where celebrities provide entertainment for the viewers and winnings go for the charity institution they represent. In addition, there are many websites proposing charity gambling and which report various profits percentages being donated as well as land based casinos, which regularly contribute serious financial help to different foundations. Originally, gambling was created as some form of entertainment; therefore gamblers who tend to take it to the extreme levels cannot set a good example. New population of gamblers, which finds the entertainment value in gaming and not the key to financial freedom, should represent its authentic perspective. Considering endless amount of materials, especially movies and books, which emphasize the positive side and fun of gaming, we cannot discard old stereotypes in favor of new ones. Eventually, it is not the gambling act itself that makes it beneficial or harmful to the individual. It is the decision of the individual if gambling would rule him or he would rule his gambling habit. The popularity and success of gambling trend is probably one of the best ways to measure its many advantages. Players have found that in many ways the online methods offered at casinos are just as enjoyable as those found in land based casinos, while being infinitely more convenient and far less intimidating. Every story has at least two sides for interpretation; as a result, we should not judge gambling using extreme examples or experiences, but rather look for objective conclusions.

Laser Hair Removal Painless Treatment

Monday, February 27th, 2006

Laser Hair treatment is considered as best of all treatments. one is considering for long run. Without having to waxing, shaving the painful time consuming as well as repeat process.
Laser hair removal is the best of all worlds. Who does not want to never have to pick up the razor again? Who doesn’t want to avoid the cuts and rashes from this daily task? Laser hair removal does take this away from you because it gives you permanent hair removal. That’s right. You do not have to shave or have waxing treatments after a success laser hair removal procedure. Learning how it works is the best course of action for those that are looking at this procedure as their life changing technique.

How It Works

Possibly because of all the horror movies we watched growing up, many of us hear the world laser and instantly get scared. What is that high powered light that is going to be focused onto my skin? Although it may seem alarming at first, the fact is that laser hair removal is nothing more than a bit of heat. In many cases, it is far less painful than waxing.

The procedure will feel like a rubber band being snapped at your skin, nothing more than that. Most people have no problem with the pain of laser hair removal. The procedure starts through a consultation with your technician. He will learn what it is that you expect from the procedure, which areas that you would like to have treated and then explain how it will work for you. In most cases, it is as simple as spending an hour lying down, while a technician works a laser over your body. The laser will be absorbed by the pigment in your hair follicles and those follicles will be damaged. This damage causes the hair follicles to become unable to grow hair, thus you have permanent hair removal.

Yet, it is important to note that hair removal techniques like this one may require several procedures. That is due to the fact that your hair needs to be in the growing stages not just there. Composing George Winston Style

Monday, February 27th, 2006

If you’re a fan of New Age piano, no doubt you’ve listened to some of George Winston’s music. What I find fascinating about his songs is how he creates them. Most improvisers/composers start with the melody, usually because it’s the easiest way to begin.

What George does is start with the background. He creates an aural canvas over which he improvises the melody. This is an excellent way to create with because once you have the chord changes for the first 8-bars or so, you’ve pretty much finished a section of music.

Now after Winston gets his (A) section, it’s another textural background that will usually make its appearance for the (B) section. The beautiful thing about this method is that it really frees up the right-hand! Once your left hand is playing the background, you are able to create melody easily. It’s like a lead guitar player creating a solo while the band lays down the rhythm and chord changes. In fact, George Winston has referred to his left hand as the rhythm section.

Creating the background first is just another way to compose/improvise. There is absolutely nothing wrong with going with the melody first if that is what inspires you. However, it’s good to know how others are creating so you can learn from them.

Two Poems: “Black Poncho,” and “Spirits of de Copan” [in English and Spanish]

Sunday, February 26th, 2006

English Version

12) Black Poncho

(of Saint Cosme Hill, by Lima, Peru)

Lost in the grottos of Peru—
By the hills of Huancayo
Black Poncho was given
A treasure of gold…;
By none other than,
Demonic goblins!

…in the form of scorching fruit;
Hence, Black Poncho fooled
The goblins of old

By using his poncho to pull
The sizzling golden fruit
Through the Andes to Lima, Peru!…

Henceforward, he was swindled
By a jeweler of dire repute.
Thus, his life changed
(as so often they do);
And now he lives with:
Thirty-five dogs, on San Cosme Hill.

Note: Information taken from a number of conversations with the locals of Lima, Peru (and my father-in-law) especially from a conversation with Hernan Espinoza, a waiter in Lima, Peru, as he remembered it (the year being: l945); 5-4-2005; #625; there is also another side to this man, one that is considered to more on the side of Robin Hood, the thief; as Papa Augusto would have it.

Poncho Negro

(del Cerro San Cosme en Lima, Perú)

Perdido en las grutas de Perú-
Por las collados de Huancayo
Dieron a Poncho negro
Un tesoro de oro …;
Por ninguno otro que,
¡Engendros demoníacos!

…en la forma de fruta chamuscada;
De ahí, Poncho Negro mofó
A los engendros del pasado

Usando su poncho para jalar
La fruta de oro que chispea
¡Por Los Andes a Lima, Perú! …

Después, él fue estafado
Por un joyero de reputación dudosa.
Así, su vida se cambió
( como tan a menudo esto pasa);

13. The Spirits de Copan

Part one

I see them in the skies
I hear them in their hells
They whisper and they moan

And never are alone—
The Spirits and the Ghouls…
The Spirits de Copan!

They are shadows in my world
Echoes in my dreams
A mystery and a force
To a cosmic happening!
The Spirits and the Ghouls…
The Spirits de Copan!…

Part Two
(Hiding Spirits)

These spirits hide in ancient stones
With glaring eyes:
And humans bones, —

In ebbing shadows
The passing moon;
By trees—and clouds
And macabre gloom—
In the winds, the winds—
(The clouds)
Outside windows…!

They are no man’s friend
The spirits and the Ghouls
The Spirits de Copan!…

Part Three

The Spirits de Copan (have)—:
Long ears, with rabbit feet
Jaguar arms—… secrets.

These were the kings
The Maya kings, — (now)
The Spirits of Copan!…

Part Four
(Maya Kings)

Smoke Rabbit
18-Rabbit
Smoke Shell
Dawn
…Mo!
All carved on Stelaes
Hieroglyphic stones
For legends now told
Of Maya kings who once ruled.

Part Five
(My Moment)

In the Great Plaza
By the Acropolis of Copan,

A spirit, let known
(In its trembling vacuum):
“Leave us in peace!
Leave us alone!
We’ve been here
For two-thousand years
In the Valley of Copan!”

As I looked towards

The imposing palaces
I replied
(Listening to the nearby
Bird’s chipper—knowing
All that was left was peace
And a hopeful redemption):
“Let there be no more—
Resistance…let there be peace!
As you please!…”

And I walked away
Out of the Copan Valley!….

13. Los Espíritus de Copan

Parte Uno

Los veo en los cielos
Los oigo en sus infiernos
Ellos susurran y ellos gimen

Y nunca están solos-
Los Espíritus y los Demonios …
¡Los Espíritus de Copan!

Ellos son sombras en mi mundo
Ecos en mis sueños
Un misterio y una fuerza
¡A un acontecimiento cósmico!
Los Espíritus y los Demonios …
¡Los Espíritus de Copan!…

Parte Dos
(Espíritus Escondidos)

Estos espíritus se ocultan en piedras antiguas
Con ojos evidentes:
Y huesos de gente,-

En sombras que bajan
La luna que pasa;
Por árboles - y nubes
Y penumbra macabra-
En los vientos, los vientos-
( Las nubes)
¡Fuera de ventanas …!

Ellos no son amigo del hombre
Los espíritus y los Demonios
¡Los Espíritus de Copan!…

Parte Tres

Los espíritus de Copan (tienen)-:
Grandes orejas, con pies de conejo
Brazos de jaguar - … secretos.

Estos fueron los reyes
Los reyes Maya, - (ahora)
¡Los Espíritus de Copan!…

Parte Cuatro
( Maya Reyes)

Conejo de Humo
18-conejos
Cáscara de Humo
Alba
¡…Mo!
Todos tallados sobre Estelas
Piedras jeroglíficas
Por leyendas ahora contadas
De los reyes Maya que una vez gobernaron.

Parte Cinco
( Mi Momento)

En Gran Plaza
Por la Acrópolis de Copan,

Un espíritu, deja conocer
( En su trémula respiracion):
¡” Déjanos en paz!
¡” Déjanos sólos!
Hemos estado aquí
Durante dos mil años
¡En el Valle de Copan! “

Como miré hacia

Los palacios imponentes
Contesté
( Escuchando al cercano
Canto de los pájaros—sabiendo
Todo lo que fue dejado fue paz
Y un esperanzador rescate)
“Deja que no haya más-
¡Resistencia…deja que haya paz!
¡Como tu lo deseas! … “

Y me alejé
¡Del Valle Copan!….
